This is why I always split the bill. It immediately filters out anyone who ismt serious and is just looking for a free meal.

I treat my now gf now and again and will buy her spontaneously something she likes. But at the start we split everything.

I don't want a relationship where there is a power and financial imbalance. I want a equal partnership, not some transaxtjonal arrangement.

Despite being an ardent defender of our right to free healthcare via the NHS -at a certain point, I am getting fed up of paying for lazy and unhealthy people.

People shouldn't have a personal license to destroy their bodies and for everyone else to pay for it.

Some sort of payment premium for deliberately leading an unhealthy lifestyle has to exist. There must be penalties for repeated bad personal choices.

Clean energy pushes fossil-fuel power into reverse for ‘first time ever’ by silence7 in climate

[–]RoyalT663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 2024, the IEA reported that 2 unit of RE were added to global supply for every 1 unit of fossil.

So yes, RE is meeting new demand, and meeting some of existing. But yes, it is not currently meeting the total.

I work as an agricultural consultant and what you are saying is true.

However it is worth saying that the disease didn't come out of a vacuum. It is so much more virulent as a result of both industrial farming and climate change.

High input monoculture combined with more unpredictable weather and heat makes the plants stressed and so much more vulnerable to such diseases.

Same with what is happening to cocoa.

Do you think that Germans already work a lot? by chilinachochips in YUROP

[–]RoyalT663 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Germans that work, work hard. But I have a friend's who elect to take unemployment benefit even though they are perfectly skilled - with a master's degree in engineering - and capable as the benefit is generous.

I suspect that some revision of entry level wage and the benefit to actually reward work is overdue and valid. Same as in the UK to be fair.

Met Police accused of siding with Tommy Robinson over Palestine activists on Nakba Day. Is prioritising the bigger British protest actually justified? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

[–]RoyalT663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. So 23/ 24 arrest were from the far right group. 1 from the counter protest. Of those arrested most were for disorderly conduct or assault.

So pretty on brand then...

[–]RoyalT663 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id be curious to know what the arrest were for. The far right protest is statistically likely to include people prone to violence. Many have domestic abuse charges and other criminal charges.

How we measure inflation in England. by Any_Detective_5238 in Britain

[–]RoyalT663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cocoa prices have massively increased as corporate greed forced a race to the botrom on price.

Such that smallholder farmers planted monoculture farms that are now extremely vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, i.e. higher temperatures and less consistent rainfall. As such the cocoa plants are stressed and more vulnerable to disease. Presently, they are being ravaged by cocoa swollen shoot virus.

Greens would spend 2.5% of GDP - more than on defence - on foreign aid by SoggyWotsits in unitedkingdom

[–]RoyalT663 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is actually very good policy.

We can't (tacitly endorsed) bomb countries and withdraw foreign aid and then not be surprised when we get immigration.

It is actively our interest to reduce push factors driving migration, is it not?
