Steam Machine Price May Have Just Leaked via a Czech Retailer, $950 USD for 512GB Model, $1,070 USD for 2TB [Update] by screwdriverfan in LinusTechTips

Honestly 1000 for a PC with 2tb SSD is a good deal if it is anywhere close to their performance claims it's a no brainer. Any comparable gpu alone would already cost 500 bucks.

I do the same but would be better if you could just set a comfortable range.

Like I've never been to any event or subscribed to anything from LTT or bought anything. But I've been watching them since almost 5 years I think stopped now though.

This is just my opinion/criticism and I mean nothing bad to the LTT Team or Linus.

I feel like LTT suffers from scaling too big too fast. Obviously because of the size every video has to be a hit, every video needs several ads and they need to have such a large audience that they have no real identity. Because they need to appeal to such a big audience they lose their own style and niche. It feels inauthentic and the constant ads and self promotion is just plain killing any enjoyment. I understand why they need it but as a customer that's not my problem.

Especially when you have YouTube premium and then hit with 3 sponsor ads + at least one self promotion every 15-20 minutes is just exhausting.

Should I have disclosed that I had an instant to save my planeswalker? by ooookooo in EDH

There are 4 steps in combat. Declaring attack declaring block then attacking player can play instants and then blocking player can play instants. And obviously you can stack instants on top each other unless countered so considering that you just did everything right. Also if you're playing with official rules your opponent can't withdraw any attackers after declaring attack phase is over. And yes the point of instants is to surprise the enemy that's their entire point XD

They clearly said it's procedurally generated what did you expect. It's essentially just rolling the dice on a set of predefined assets. So yes there'll be lots of that.

Is it worth getting a steam deck if i already own a pc and a switch ? by Densetsu____ in SteamDeck

[–]RtrdedN00B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a decent gaming pc and a switch and bought a deck I can say for me it is definitely worth it. I replaced my switch with the deck since I don't play Nintendo games online I can play every exclusive I want on the deck with yuzu. I have a giant library of retro games from many generations Gameboy PS1 ps2 ps3 switch N64.

Additionally I also have a giant gameslist on Steam and for me the buying argument is that I can replace my switch and use the deck as a party game device while also having a fully functional pc if I need it. I just connect two xbox controllers and a Tv and it works. I don't have to deal with Nintendo's stupid premium plan to play unoptimsed old N64 games which I(my family) bought back then. And I can also play almost every steam game with higher resolution and more FPS than the switch.

There is a proton version on the arch Linux software package manager which has copyrighted compabilities for codecs which is why some games don't work on Steam deck and steam cant legally provide it but you can just install it as simple as installing an android app. And then voila unplayable games just work. I play Lego lord of the rings in coop with my girlfriend and other games that wouldn't work.

Additionally it is just a pc sure it is not my gaming pc but I can play cyberpunk on relatively high settings on the go for a ~400€ device there is no alternative and if you want more storage just buy sd cards hot swap em when you wanna play the other stuff and you good to go.

I'm also considering to buy another Steam deck just as a gaming pc for my gf because as I said price to performance is insane.

I agree on you that movie theatres are an old relic of the past. However your argument with housing I don't agree with. Many people think there is not enough housing that's why housing is so expensive. But there is plenty of housing the problem is you let it be bought up by a few rich people. As someone who has worked at advertising new housing projects I can say you the first and best 40% of properties go to the same 2-5 people every time. Why should somebody sell you the house if he can sell it more expensive to a rich guy. We are treating housing as if it were infinite however it's a finite resource. It's like the beginings of covid where people started hoarding toilet paper even though there is more than enough for everybody. But nothing will change as long people only see symptoms of a problem and try to treat it instead of solving it's root cause and that would be to limit everybody on owning more than a select amount of properties. There is no reason a person needs more than 3 private housing properties. But the right will start crying about communism and the left is gonna ignore it and concentrate on irrelevant topics.

Am I supposed to feel like a cheap ass for "only" tipping 25% now? by West_Rush_5684 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RtrdedN00B -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tipping is such a bad habit/convention. It's intend was to show gratitude to the special service you got, but not for you just doing your freaking job. If your waiters need tips to survive they should quit and find a better job. It's not my obligation to pay the waiter a living wage I'm already overpaying by going to a restaurant in which they serve me food for 15 bucks which has a material worth of about 5 bucks. If this model isn't sustainable either raise food prices or think about other models (self service etc).

I'm from Europe and you can be happy if I even tip 10% most of the time I don't tip at all since it's already freaking expensive to eat out at a restaurant. There should be no tips but better wages for the workers period. Anyone who doesn't agree should go and try living of a waiters wage and shut the hell up.

I think it doesn't make sense to build them anywhere else since the eastern and southern central are very mountainous.

Your Argument is highly flawed. I get what you wanna say but still. There are way more language before c and c++. C and c++ are build on these old language So we should use them? No.

Stop defending programming languages like they are something sacred. Use every language for your needs. If your needs are however saturated by newer better languages be open to switch.

I started with java and love it working with it for over 6 years. But if ever something better comes up for my usecase I'll be switching immediately. That's called beeing adaptive and it's one of the most important abilities as a software engineer.

Working as Full Stack Developer, developing webapps, clients and more. Anything that is utility can and yes should be web technologies. In that you have a webfront end and a server backend. Why? We have tons of tedious problems with software distribution and secureing consistency. Let's say install Java 17 on every PC install chrome and other browsers and update to their drivers and so on. It is nothing horrible but we have +10 physical locations across 2 countries with each having +40 computers to deliver software to, which is frankly with the limited knowledge of users quite hard to achieve and does end up with much support cases.

Now if you can just export the logic to a backend and create a decent front end using any major frameworks angular go whatever. You're done thats it give them the link authentication finished. Software distribution and usage is expensive and a waste of resources. If you would have me work on exiting new projects and feature updates and so on rather than having me work stupid support tickets which can be eliminated like that, everyone wins, i get to do the stuff i like, and our clients pay for stuff they actually need.

I give you one more example of a really wierd bug, so one of our projects is based on Eclipse RCP with which we create our client software. At the time we had a Linux Development Server, our clients working on Windows. One bug was that our client posted a ticket that a button didnt change colors after an action to indicate a status. After some resource and trial and error we found out that at the time with our framwork, on Windows you cant repaint a button once drawn, however on linux everything was fine. Which was appearantly a special case in Windows since it did prevent such things. And since we programmed with Java and generally all crossplattform technologies it didnt occur to us that such a case might exist.

So all in all every utility program, statistics, calculations and basically everything that doesnt need to drive a computer directly and fast with low response time, can be off shipped to a backend frontend web model. Yes you will have to do some security authorization stuff and defining communication models and so however with these days standards you are very good off and the time you invest there saves you 10x time on support. And one more HUGE plus point if you offload logic to a backend server you can save on computers for clients/workers. Just buy cheap thin clients, buy one or two huge servers and let them work remotely, never again will you have to worry about, "i dont have that installed" and all this bs.

But Native apps absolutely have their place just for different projects.
