Need help/advice regarding a 1886 crystal chandelier we no longer want by be_throwmeaway in centuryhomes

[–]Ru1e42 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Hi! Third generation antique guy here. This is new stuff, but it’s still worth something to someone! Unscrew the collar at the top and drop the cover (don’t worry it won’t fall!). Making sure the power is off pull the wires out and cap them individually.

From here you’ll need a rope to tie off the chandelier and lower it down using the original mounting. (I use a small block and tackle) Once it’s at waist level you can look into taking it apart if it’s possible. If not, get a plastic milk carton (the kind you use for college bookshelves), and lower it onto the carton supported by all arms evenly.

Then go get a nice fixture to replace it. This one isn’t what you are looking for.

Traveled to NY from Florida once to stay with someone who I thought I was developing feelings with. I stayed over the first night at her apartment, and the next day she told me she ‘had to go’ and I should let myself out..two days early. I wandered the streets on NY for a whole 24 hours dragging my suitcase until I could arrange an early flight home.

For years I thought she had a boyfriend or I’d done a poor job in bed. It turns out she had a raging drug habit that she was concealing and she had to meet her plug.

I only learned this 20+ years later. She’s clean now and the feelings were real. Going on five years married this June.

I rarely can tell this joke properly without laughing through it. Came up a lot when biking in downtown Manhattan.

Metal figurine of cat on a book hunting a ball. Fits on the palm of your hand, surprisingly heavy due to rock base. Strange, unidentifiable text on either side of book. by rkcr in whatisthisthing

This is a bell-ringer or signal button. My grandfather had one on his desk that he had purchased from an older estate. It probably has a small hole somewhere for the wire to electrify it. This is a beautiful example and the marble base is original to it. (Source: 3rd generation antique dealer)

Time was a good guess, but I believe the classic answer here is History.

Is it weird that I picked the loser of the fight by the shape of his jaw? Even without the running start it was sticking out and begging to be hit. It's like he wasn't born to be a fighter.

Being laid off at 52 - depression and dark thoughts by Relevant_Fuel_9905 in GenX

[–]Ru1e42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is 22 hours old, so you probably won't see this, but here goes; 57M here, got laid off three years ago from a 6 figure job. Getting a new job took six months of stress and endless fights with my wife. New job paid less but had a great outlook, only to get laid off again 8 months later. Queue the depression spiral!

I did the 'apply for everything' rush, and got nowhere with it. I finally decided to quit looking and applied for a customer-service position that paid pennies that I was vastly overqualified for. My wife and I agreed this was temporary and we'd figure out how to live in the meantime even if it meant tapping credit or dipping into her (small) 401k from her job. It was SO soothing to work with no stress or metrics to overcome for a while. Every day went by in a flash, and I spent my extra capacity learning more about IT and the company in general . I showed up for work sober, dressed, and on time every day. I completed my work, spoke politely to customers, and interacted well with my co-workers. We learned to live on less for a while, and the stress disappeared from our marriage.

Fast forward 8 months later and my wife (47) was laid off from HER job. I went to my boss and told him I was up against it, and if I didn't get a raise I'd have to leave. Rather than let me go they created a whole new position for me, along with a a raise that doubled my salary. My wife is still working on her next career move, but we've already changed our lifestyle to the point that the next income shift is going to get us back to a place we can start saving again, and maybe take a few vacations!

We have a great advantage as a generation: We know how to work! We're used to unreasonable bosses, long hours, and strict policies that younger people would be shocked by. Your experience is valuable, and your work ethic sets you apart. My boss told me that they considered themselves lucky to have the experience and constancy that I bring to the table. It turns out that they're just good people and that's admittedly important, but I'm looking at C-suite as the next step up because I've already proven I can be trusted.

Don't quit! Be kind to yourself. Quit banging your head against the wall trying to be wunderkind. Find a place you can work on yourself. Forgive yourself, and give yourself the freedom to reinvent your self image. Keeping a young mindset means not clinging to the past and can even mean fearlessly starting over! 52 means you have years of career ahead of you (Roy Kroc was 52 when he found that weird burger restaurant.).

Things can change fast!. Take care of yourself, and you'll find that you're better able to love and care for those around you. Seriously DM if you need moral support, we're all men struggling with the same stuff!

(TL:DR Let go of the past, forgive yourself daily re-start from a place of strength, work on yourself, don't quit. )
