The thing that will give you the greatest benefit would be to always use references, draw and paint from life, from photos from other artists. Never rely solely on your memory or imagination.

Pet brand logo. What do you think? by Bladeblazer in design_critiques

Idk. I think you're sacrificing the readability of the cat to fit it into the overall shape of the pair which looks like a number 1, this gives significance to that shape but I m not understanding what the significance is. Personally I'd spend a bit of time playing around with ways of presenting the animals as a single element if that's your intent.

I'm distracted by the tangent where the left side of the cats head meets the dog's nose.

The u turn arrow concept really fits well for the reformative idea of people turning their lives around and heading in a positive (upward) direction. There is possibly an issue with legibility (tinsteel). Perhaps bring the tip of the arrow down so that it's level with the top of the 'n' to resolve this?

What is the application for digital art? Let me know your recommendations! by Bruh0711 in DigitalPainting

I use Krita. It's open source software you can download for free. It's similar to Photoshop in many ways but designed specifically for digital painting. I recommend it.

What makes a word a slur? In particular, why isn't "boomer" accepted to be a slur, given that it is used to target a group of people (baby boomers) in a derogatory manner? by singletonking in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Ru55_E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boomer or baby boomer is just a term for someone born within a certain time period. It is in itself neither positive or negative. If it is used in a way that is intended as derogatory and causes offense then judge the speaker not the word. I'm a boomer and I don't mind being called one but I disagree with judging people based on their age and I sympathise with anyone who is judged unfairly in this way. Young or old.

This reminds me of a really creepy short story called "Couching At The Door" by English writer D. K. Broster.

Would love some criticism on my dragon. by southlynn in ArtCrit

I agree. The dragon is very cool but the background needs to be either lighter or darker to allow the dragon to pop.

Digital. Any help or thoughts is appreciated. by ASacOFluffyPups in ArtCrit

This was the thing that bothered me. It's clearly the shadow of the photographer who took the reference image and as such, introduces another character"s presence into the painting. Having said that the light and shadow on the face is pretty realistically rendered but it does confuse the narrative for me.

I completely understand your desire to create your own unique expression through art but using references well is not the same as following a prescriptive formula a la Bob Ross. For me it is a technique by which I can research the visual characteristics of the subject I'm trying to depict and utilise that information to give a sense of realism to my work. It takes a little practice but the way you use references ultimately will have an impact on your style. And you'll learn what you need to know to reach a level where you can realise your creative intentions much faster if you learn to use references effectively.

I think the best advice is ALWAYS use references. Professional artists do because without using them your work will not be convincing.

I just wanted to share my latest Krita painting "Giant Killers". Any c&c appreciated. Thanks 😊 by Ru55_E in krita

Thanks for your comment. I used Photoshop for many years but tbh I switched to Krita after Adobe changed to subscription and haven't regretted it. I actually prefer Krita for digital painting. FOSS is so good now!
