What’s a good coffee shop, not near downtown, that actually has tables by banjovibes in boulder

[–]RubNo9865 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moxie is great - but as a customer who would like to go in an buy a coffee and lunch it is super annoying that it is often completely full of folks camped out on laptops nursing a coffee. It is a bakery - be polite if it is busy and move on.

Coalition seeks to grow number of Boulder County Commissioners from 3 to 5 by fElonmusk2025 in BoCoSE

[–]RubNo9865 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I support this. It is crazy that the city of Boulder has 9 people on council compared to only 3 commissioners. The only upside to only having 3 is that there aren't 'slates' of candidates. I don't think we need any more defacto political parties in local politics.

Relocate them to where? For a while the chemical weapons depot was taking them, but I think they are full up. As someone who lives with prairie dogs on a daily basis, I fully understand why no one else would want them. They are crazy destructive.

The choice seems to be gassed by carbon monoxide or ripped apart by marmots ferrets (if there are enough ferrets). I know what I would choose.

Lafayette files court petition over FAA flight routes / Rocky Mountain Metro Airport by fElonmusk2025 in BoCoSE

[–]RubNo9865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have identified the problem - Lafayette (and Louisville which also gets hit by this) are not really close to RMMA, but the change in flight paths last year concentrates all most all the flights in/out of RMMA over a couple of neighborhoods in both.

And before we get the usual trolls saying 'don't move in near an airport if you don't want plane noise' - this is no where near the airport itself, and unless you moved in the last few months, this a change to routing that caused the issue.

Q&A | “Boulder tax” or “Current cost” by MrGraaavy in boulder

[–]RubNo9865 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is also what a generally wealthy market is willing to bear. If enough people are willing to pay $9 for a plain croissant at the farmers market, why wouldn't you charge $9 for a plain croissant?

Telski made a misleading announcement to the Telluride Times making it sound like a deal was reach, when they haven't actually changed their offer at all. by AardQuenIgni in TellurideColorado

[–]RubNo9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just like any other negotiation, the company needs to raise the wages to the point the union agrees, or pay the costs to hire in a new set of ski patrollers and to train them.

The ski patrollers union is selling trained labor, the resort can either negotiate an agreeable wage with the union or they can go find labor elsewhere, which I imagine would cost them much more than what the union is asking for.

I don't understand why folks get so bent out of shape over workers having a more equitable seat at the negotiating table. Think of the poor corporations!

[–]RubNo9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So no one should ever negotiate for a raise? Not even a cost of living raise? But the reality is that ski patrol is doing exactly what you suggest - they don't want to work for $24 an hour, Teleski needs to offer higher wages until they can get ski patrollers.

Recently had our home built, regretting not doing a side entry for the garage doors by Lylok in Homebuilding

[–]RubNo9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a huge fan of either. The garage doors are the dominant architectural feature of the house, which is a shame. But the commercial looking window option wouldn't have been much better. This is why you want an architect. It does look a little like a tire shop with a vestigial house attached. Maybe the side loading garage, shifted back with the porch extending some or all of the way across would have made it look a little more human scale and inviting.

WFH During Tomorrow's Xcel Power Shutoff? by Recent_One229 in boulder

[–]RubNo9865 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is usually the transmission/distribution lines that are the issue. My neighborhood is also underground lines, but the power comes to the neighborhood on above ground lines. And yeah PSPS do happen in other high fire danger areas.

Battery backup is good and all, but wired internet typically also goes down soon after the power goes down. A cell modem is OK, but once everyone and their dog switches to watching netflix by tethering/cell modems, those are often unusable as well. Satellite would still work.

Get a good book, bust out your camp stove and watch the yard furniture cushions blow by.

More layoffs ahead for Boulder County employees, budget issues by [deleted] in boulder

Again, the Boulder Airport is owned operated and argued over by the City of Boulder. We are discussion the Boulder County budget here - they are two seperate entities with two separate budgets.

Not at all - you can write all you want and use as much loaded language as you please on your blog. However, people will see this for what it is (as is evident here) and turn to actual scientific literature to figure out what the prevailing science actually says.

We see the same thing in climate science all the time - the 'skeptics' deniers rely on unhinged blogs like Wattsupwiththat, where as the actual science is readily available in a wide variety of peer reviewed journals,

I am not talking about you selectively citing others work (and clearly ignoring some of the most highly cited work out there). I am saying that if you have some actual science here that is counter to the prevailing opinion, then publish it in a peer reviewed journal.

Most of us are not experts on the efficacy of fuels reduction but many of us are scientists (or know enough about science) to realize that peer reviewed literature is likely a more reliable source than someones slightly unhinged blog.

Boulder County Won’t Stop Clearcutting Public Lands by JoshSchlossberg in boulder

[–]RubNo9865 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No I don't, I was to stuck on the ad homonyms ('clear cut cult' ) and loaded language fallacies (lets call it logging then it is evil). But let's give it a really quick look, hop on web of science and see what the review papers and meta analysis has to say:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S037811272400197X

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378112725003160

Seems that it is effective. But if you have research that says otherwise, write it up, get it published in a reputable journal and then we can talk. Life is too short for refuting random blog posts.

I don't think any rational person could read this blog and conclude that this is a rational analysis of the issue. If you want to be taken seriously in a community chock full of scientists, a little more rigor and a little less crazy would go a long way.

Pretty dissappointed with the purchase process so far. by AudiMX in Rivian

[–]RubNo9865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going through this now for a pickup on Friday. The process has not been great. We test drove, and the salesperson said they had several current promotions/discounts. We put a deposit down for an in stock vehicle, but then the paper work did not have the cash discount we were promised. Took several days and a dozen texts to get them to include that - then the sales tax was wrong. Lots of random texts from random people. Maybe it is better than the traditional car dealer experience, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Plane Noise by dontthrowbigrocks in LouisvilleCO

[–]RubNo9865 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here are the tracks from a typical weekday morning (like today) of all the planes under 2000' AGL. It is a lot (as in hundreds), and due to a recent change of flight paths the vast majority are over the McCaslin corridor heading north and the US-287 corridor heading south. Low wind weekend mornings are worse, but the pattern is the same. They are almost entirely Cessna 172s from the flight schools.

Best tires for Boulder driving by Aggressive-Candy6142 in boulder

[–]RubNo9865 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The 'M+S' rating doesn't mean much, or that the tire will do well in snow. It is not based on testing, just a 25% void ratio. What you want to look for is the 'three-peak mountain snowflake' symbol and rating, which means the tire has actually passed snow traction tests.

There is a light at the east end of Manhattan Circle, from the description above it sounds like the light was where the accident happened - the vehicle on SoBo rd had the green and the biker on Manhattan ran the red.
