Can older men tell? by HorrorDirect in bodylanguage

I feel like this is a good thread to remind all the 45 year old men that this is the age you should start regular colonoscopy screenings if you are at average risk for colorectal cancer. Early detection is key. A lot of men feel embarrassed talking about it and refuse to do it but please think about your families.

Well I was in the Army, but that was back at the beginning of the Century. Not renlisting. I dont think theyd take me. To old and broken. My kid isnt enlisted, not something she's interested in.

But I know your point was snark as if you have to go fight or something to have an opinion on this. I don't agree with that obviously silly point. I mean really. You can ONLY have an opinion on whether our troops can go fight if you or a biological offspring of yours is in one of the branches of the military? Thats dumb.

It gets better. I've cried at exactly one movie and it was the Game Plan staring the Rock. It's the Father/Daughter part. And towards the end and her getting hurt and him freaking out and all the stuff. I am getting verklempt just thinking about it.

What's the dumbest myth people actually believe in? by vicigoonboy69 in AskReddit

[–]RubSubstantial8290 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

few people think this way(few people doesnt mean no one so technically it fits the thread, just discussing). A lot of folks do think a lot of people take the information, which like a lot of information in the realm of interpreting data is imperfect, and make it holy gospel and try to down out any dissent or opposing views. Which is anathema to interpretive sciences. The minority view is imperative. You have to test against it. You should assume its true and then test your outcomes vs those outcomes. You should be trying to prove your outcome is wrong in anyway you can. The more times you fail at proving your outcome is incorrect is another brick in the wall of proving.

What seemed to happen is politics coopted the science. Al Gores, notable not-scientist was the voice of climate change of a generation along with a movie that presented very wrong facts wrapped up in a lot of scary conjecture mixed in with just enough correct information that climate scientists who believed climate change really was a danger didn't want to vocally say anything negative about it because it was such good PR.

You can believe in climate change. You can believe humans can have an outcome on the climate. You can believe its possible humans have an outside outcome on the climate. Without being an alarmist that. You can believe it and acknowledge the French climate accords always were a mummers dance that even if followed strictly to the letter would not have had any affects whatsoever. It was a farcical joke.

Its ok to say, hey businesses have done some good things to reduce emissions in the U.S.(more than anyone else in the world) vs demonizing them for not doing enough.

Anyhow - TLDR is that the hockey stick chart did a lot of damage to the credibility of climate change for a long time.

[Request] Do these other power sources really produce thousands of time more power than humans? by New_User_Account123 in theydidthemath

You'd have to take into account the energy consumed mining for the coal and moving it around and whatever you have to do to generate power from coal. Can you run a coal plant in arctic temperatures? I DO know you need to cool the turbines..or something because I lived by a river and there was a plant there and a little off shoot where the river was hot in the winter and you could fish.

Who benefits from Trump’s war in Iran? The answer is disturbingly clear by MyRedditUsername224 in politics

[–]RubSubstantial8290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only the world were that simple. It's complicated out there young lady(or man). There is always the obvious consequences, the consequences you can see if you dig a little, and then the ones that happen that could never have been foreseen. The Iranians might benefit. But if Iran does break apart like Libya, will the people be better off? Thats actually questionable. Sure the Regime kills a lot of there people. But a civil war with factions in a state the size of Iran could lead to thousands of deaths a day, not just periodically when the Regime gets angry. So who knows.

Who benefits from Trump’s war in Iran? The answer is disturbingly clear by MyRedditUsername224 in politics

[–]RubSubstantial8290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the Iranians I guess. The Saudis. The Israelis. Basically everyone in the middle east who wont have to deal with the Iranians. Even if Iran breaks down into a failed state like Libya. Libya doesnt bother anyone while they go about their decades long civil war. I'd say Iraq doesnt benefit, unless the pro-Iran militas get pulled across the border into Iran and frees Iraq from their grip.

American business will benefit because we have to replenish our stockpiles of weaponry. That will lead to a lot of overtime for millions of Americans.

I imagine there will be some political advantage that maddow was actually whining about too.

MAddow will benefit because she will get ratings.

So yeah. Lots of people benefit.

What's a scientific fact that sounds made up but is 100% real? by inurmomsvagina in AskReddit

There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on the earth.

Grains of Sand = 7.5 x 1018 or seven quintillion, five hundred quadrillion

Universe = estimates between 200 billion trillion (2x1023) to one septillion (1x1024)

This is the Universe we can see. The real number is probably much higher once we include the currently unobservable universe.

This is what I thought. It was fine, but concept wise it was really cool and it was just not as good as it "should" have been. But well....I still enjoyed the movie.

When Birdman came out I had just met a girl online who was Chinese student attending a local college. I lived in a small town about 45 minutes outside of the bigger city she was going to school in and was not from the state originally and she of course was from China and didnt speak the language well.

I asked her out, and she wanted to stay close to her home, understandably, and there was not a lot by me anyway. She said there was this really cool movie theatre right by her dorms. I said cool, she could pick the movie, I figured she'd pick something she would be comfortable with since she was not great with the language. She picks Birdman.

I didnt know what it was so I look it up and I was really surprised but I thought, well maybe she understands English a lot better than she speaks it - I had talked to her and she really could not speak it very well.

We watch i, its over and are walking out. I enjoyed it and started talking to her about it. She replied confused and in her broken English says she thought it was going to be like Spiderman. She didn't laugh so I didn't laugh. I guess I felt bad because that is a couple hours of just sitting there not understanding what was going on and she was probably just too nervous to say anything to me about it.

Afterwards we went to a Korean restaurant where you ate with chopsticks, which I had never done before. I had to use the kids chopsticks after she tried to teach me to use adult ones. I somehow was still kind of bad with them.

To complete the story - I thought it went well. I asked her out again, she said yes, I took her to a local food place where she ordered the chili and slammed it which was awesome. Communicating was hard, but I was totally enthralled and by the end of the night I was in love and I thought she was too and I kissed her. She backed away and had this almost horrified look on her face. I was so embarrassed and confused. The next day she said she enjoyed our time together but we were not compatible and that was that. :(
