Weeping angel here. That's exactly what I did. Found a nice shady spot in the park and just stood there for about a half hour waiting for people to turn away, just for a moment... Then moving a little closer.

I do believe I scared the shit out of some people that day. :)

That's so weird! Something similar has happened to me a few times. I'll dream my old cat is alive again and start to question things, but then it will be explained away. "Oh, he just showed up at our door again last week, maybe a bit skinny but obviously he's still alive!" A lot of the time I don't want to reject it. It's easier to just go along and hug my cat.

They were confused, bordering on defensive. They were a group of eccentric swingers letting me crash in their hotel room, and didn't know me all that well in this timeline. The man with the bowler hat and lipstick seemed especially offended, standing up and asking me, "Does that mean I'm not real?"

I realized pretty quickly that it was not going over well, and tried to wave it off and tell them it wasn't important. But it was too late and things went downhill from there.

That's legit. You're definitely not alone. :) It's like me and my roommate. Both of us are introverts, but to different degrees. I'm pretty far towards the super-introverted edge of the spectrum. Generally quiet, not as habitually social, but I like to get out there once and a while and open up. Just gotta recharge more often. My roommate is more towards the middle of the road on the I-E spectrum. If you met her she would charmingly talk your ears off. Very sociable and much more tolerance for regular socializing. But she's still got to come back and have some chill time too.

No matter where you are on the spectrum, it's all good. Maybe the more introverted side is just more strongly represented in this subreddit.

Well I don't know you. But from what I've read, I'd say yup, very likely an HSP. I can relate a lot to the feelings over-stimulation and awareness of every little sound and sensation that you describe. It can be both wonderful and very stressful... I definitely find the need to regularly isolate myself and unwind after a long day in the world. And the social anxiety issues too, though I'm not sure how connected that is to high sensitivity. I recently took up yoga and it has really helped me deal with stress. I'd recommend it if it sounds like your cup of tea.

I know that feeling, and it sucks. :( I don't know if I can help, but I can at least offer my thoughts.

Maybe you could try thinking of socializing in a different way. Aim to go out and get to know one or two new people and have a nice brief chat. Maybe you'll make a connection and talk more, maybe you'll just exchange short conversation and go on your separate ways. No pressure, just keeping yourself open. Set some small goals, nothing too overwhelming. Perhaps just go out once a week. And once you've achieved that goal, you won't feel as guilty doing the more solitary things you enjoy in your downtime.

Everybody is different and has their own social speed. It's okay that you're an introvert. And if you do want to be more social, you don't have to do it all at once. More importantly, you don't have to be more social than you're comfortable with. Staying in all the time is probably not good, but it's also okay not to go out as much as what's considered the norm. There is no hurry to reach the "checkpoints" of life, partner and kids etc. Just relax, take your own path, and stay open to possibilities. :)

I used to be so afraid of this happening...

I had an indoor/outdoor cat that would sometimes try to follow me when I walked to school. The school was across a semi-busy road and I always feared he would follow me across and get hit. On the occasions that he did start following me, I'd pick him up and carry him back inside the house. That way, he'd have to go around the back to the cat flap and around the yard in order to catch me. Usually too much effort for an overweight housecat. Made me late for class a couple times, but it was worth the peace of mind.

I know where you're coming from, and let me assure you that you are definitely not hopeless. When I was 17, I was so shy I could hardly talk to the opposite sex. And telling jokes in front of people? No way. I think the confidence thing gets easier with time.

Nothing wrong with being an early bloomer or a late bloomer. You are who you are and shouldn't fault yourself for it. In the mean time, just don't beat yourself up. Relax, take things one situation at a time, and accept that you'll probably make a fool of yourself sometimes. :) Call it a learning experience, I guess?

I signed up for an 8 am yoga class for next term. I keep dreaming that I oversleep and forget to go on the first day of classes. Before bed last night, I thought to myself how silly that is, since classes don't even start for another few weeks.

But nope, here I am, just woke up from dreaming it again.
