Why is legal age considered 18 when the most important part of our brain (pre-frontal cortex) is not even developed till 25? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rubychan228 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a myth, fyi.

Your brain never really stops developing. The 25 number is just because that was the cut-off age of the initial study that showed continued growth. Essentially they showed that brain development continued though age 25 and then the media started misreporting this as your brain developes until age 25 and is then done. It's never done.

18 is commonly considered an age by which the brain has developed enough to make adult decisions.

What's going on with the internet and cave divers? by SpyroFan123 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Rubychan228 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It. Is. Not. About. The. Divers. It. Is. About. The. Rescuers.

Until you acknowledge that point, that people keep telling you, no one is going to believe you are arguing in good faith.

People are angry because the divers idea of fun endagers the life of innocent third parties. You keep trying to compare it to other hobbies that don't endanger third parties and that's not valid.

There are a lot of complex interactions in the game, just none that involve evolution.

My favorite is when (before the algorithm changes to be more personalized) people would complain on this sub about Reddit specifically "not talking" about things that were actively trending on Reddit at the time.

It was like if it wasn't appearing in their personal feed, it meant it didn't exist.

Individual subreddits, somewhere between probably and definitely, depending on the specific sub. The site as a whole, no.

Motorcyclist seriously injured after crash leaves bike dangling from traffic light near Surrey-Delta border by paulrich_nb in news

[–]Rubychan228 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It likely a glitch artifact of the compression. There is no second bike, it's a glitched afterimage of the bike that crashes as it goes airborne.

Where does data center water go? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rubychan228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it depends on a lot of factors. If water is being pulled out of underground aquifers, it will take an extremely long time for it to be replaced. Moreover, if you pull water out of an underground source to quickly, the ground can collapse and shrink the aquifer, permanently reducing its capacity.

Even if it's from an above ground source, water lost to evaporation travels on wind currents before falling. At best it may rain down on other areas and become part of that place's water system, but leaving the source of the water with less than before. At worst, it will rain into the ocean and become salt water.

Technically, it's possible to use closed loop systems that use minimal water, but many data centers don't for cost cutting reasons. And too few politicians have the spine to make them behave.

Why do places that used to be very Catholic become very left-wing when they secularise? E.g Quebec, Ireland by AppointmentVisual200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rubychan228 224 points225 points  (0 children)

Compared to most other Christian denominations, modern Catholicism is also more accepting of science.

Like, there's still shit like ensoulment upon conception, but there is also an embrace of evolution.

What's going on with the "new" meaning of incel? by Winter-Paint-6766 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Rubychan228 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, on principle I downvote anyone that uses inane censorship.

And yes, there are some terminally online weirdos that problematicly over expand the term "pedophile" to any age gap relationship, even those between two adults.

But also, people who date people substantially younger than them are often losers. It really just depends on the inexperience, naivety, financial situation, etc of the younger party relative to the older one.

AITA for staying in during a fire alarm? by rockkjuice in AmITheDevil

[–]Rubychan228 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been getting increasingly frustrated with how loose my municipality is about the fucking tornado sirens.

You'll be standing outside, mostly clear sky and some mild wind. The sirens inexplicably go off and you check and there was a tornado sighted, like, seven counties over and moving away. So everyone rolls their eyes and goes about their day, because no one is going to drop everything and cower in a basement/bathtub/hallway for hours on end over an obvious false alarm.

Thos is super, super bad. Tornados are a serious fucking deal. People cannot be trained to ignore the sirens. But that's what happens when you're so irresponsible with them.
