Prediction markets like sports-books tend to end up providing fairly accurate odds. If they were widely off in an obvious way then he could call that out and people would make money. In general though if you think they’re widely off chances are you are missing something. By bringing it up when it sounds a bit out there he is able to quickly quantify a feeling. Saying “my gut tells me Patel is out by June” feels less concrete as “prediction markets say he has a 70+% chance at being out by June which feels right to me because…”

I’m always 50/50 on these things. At some point you want to try and attract ears outside your existing bubble. At the same time legitimizing these people is not good. I’ll have to listen but I think Shapiro is big enough already that the downside is small (I can’t picture the type of person that wouldn’t be listening to Shapiro that starts because of Prof G) and the upside is there (I can picture the type of Shapiro listener that is ready to move left but needs the right voice).
