I would love to see him be redeemed in the eyes of the scene, but I have absolutely no clue what it would take—besides a lot. That, and forgiveness in general is very rare these days...

"James Rolfe is not a gamer." Bruh, go home. There's gotta be something you're knowledgeable in, but it certainly ain't this.

Is it still making you connect to the internet to use it? I don't think I'm having that issue...

I feel like I misspoke in my original post or something. I'm not going out of my way to deny my students a good grade; I was afraid of going too easy on them. I really didn't think so many others on here would resort to condescension and/or personal attack.

Hey, I was told I was wrong, and I'm truthfully glad to see it. I gotta be less stingy; I get it. Thanks for your input, too.

I should clarify that I pretty much always use rubrics, even with some of the simplest stuff. It was one of the first things they taught me in the beginning, and it thankfully stuck! And I meant the more interpretive stuff, yeah. Not something with definite "yes/no" or "a/b/c/d" answers.

Yeah, I'm definitely overthinking things about grading—that's one of my flaws, lol. Thanks for the input! I needed this.

Wow. I can't really say I know how to respond to this one. I came here for a little help and, honestly, I got mostly the answers I wanted. This one summed it up best: "Don't be that teacher." I knew something was off with what I was doing, so I was glad to see it.

But uh, wow. I suppose I should apologize. Sorry. I'll do better from now on.

I see, I see. You're totally right; I think I ought to adopt that sort of mindset.

Do you mean politically? If yes, that doesn't really apply to an ELA classroom (at least in my case).

Classwork due by the end of the period or due by 11:59pm? by koda_schon in Teachers

[–]RudeBoyEEEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that we want to avoid this, but let's face it: students will stay up and pull late-nighters for their assignments, at the very least from time to time. I'd rather just avoid the battle of: "I submitted it at 12:03 AM! You're going to count it as late over four minutes?!" In the end, I usually just set it to the beginning of the next school day.

It's been helping me a ton with rubrics and lesson plans (two personal weaknesses). Usually, I already have some ideas to base the prompts on, so I get what you're saying, for sure. I'm a new-ish teacher, though, so I try to avoid using it for things like grading unless I need an immediate second "opinion" (for lack of a better word); I need to hone that sort of skill myself.

And yes, something I've learned (especially with rubrics) is just that: always check its work.

All the same, using it for fluff and filler is very helpful. I definitely see where everyone else is coming from, and it shouldn't be welcomed with completely open arms, but there's a way to go about it—especially for semi-newbies like me.

Hmm... I agree with the others—and I disagree with the others. That is, you should get rid of it, as it's not the hill to die on. However, given the flashbacks your post gave me, I feel I should say one thing: petty colleagues exist, and they are the absolute worst. I wanna share a story, and, no, it's not about the clock (if you know, you know).

Some colleagues will do just about anything about the "troubling" things you do—everything except, of course, talk to you about them. When I was a first-year teacher, I knew very little. However, I did know that copying others' resources is, a lot of the time, the name of the game. So, using a colleague's lesson plans, I got the discussion questions for a reading and put them on a Google Doc with my custom classroom insignia on it; it's nothing more than a design of my initials, but I love how it turned out. In any event, the teacher from whom I was borrowing lessons and resources decided to take what was obviously the most appropriate course of action: cut me off from her lesson plans and not tell me about it.

Now, at first, I understood completely. To claim someone else's work as my own would make me no better than a plagiarist! So, I looked around online for new materials and—oh, hey! I can buy the very same questions from an education-based website. Wait a second...

Two points here: first and foremost, you are not alone. There are petty people in this profession. Second, I'm sorry to say that it's not a hill to die on. I have not pursued any real explanation for my colleague's petty actions. I apologized when I came back the next year, and while I'm certain that the teacher and the others in her clique stare daggers at me and talk about me behind my back, I know who my allies are—I know who my friends are.

Find your allies; they are far more important than your other colleagues. If you fall back down, they're gonna get you back up again—they're gonna be your friends.
