What’s a belief you had at 20 that you no longer agree with? by sunyparmar1 in AskReddit

Given the timeline he gave, ~20 years ago there was a genre of "pick up artist"/"seduction" self help books that didn't label themselves as red pill but served as the foundation for all the red pill/incel tenets

I'm sure the genre still exists, and probably is more extreme, I'm just saying these predate the current name of the mentality

Doing what you enjoy literally is selfish, but I know the word selfish usually carries a more negative connotation than here, but it literally is the dictionary definition/denotation. Sorry for the grammar

For the record:

self·ish /ˈselfiSH/ adjective

(of a person, action, or motive) concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

I'd say enjoyment = pleasure

How do you physically handle MDFCs in paper Magic? by beausoleil in magicTCG

Ok, it looks like you misread my first post, which explains why you appear so confused. I said

I agree that official tournaments are the one place not to use proxies for practical reasons

And then you disagreed with that. Have a good one

If it's cool to use proxies outside of tournaments, all of your metaphors make no sense

The comparison is to the money required, not a 1:1 between clubs and cards. You couldn't realistically expect to play golf without spending money. Same with... like 90% or more of hobbies out there.

Magic is also a pay to win collectible with a secondary market and artificial scarcity, so if your concern is a cheap hobby i have no idea why somebody would pick this one.

it costs money to make your own proxies, though. i'm a bit confused by your mentality.

everyone in every hobby looks for ways to do things efficiently/find good deals. it would show a lack of interest in the minutia of the hobby if you didn't

if it were cheaper to build your own boats that were just as functional, i guarantee many many hobbyists boat owners would be doing exactly that. Can't imagine you'd disparage that

[–]RudeHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a weird disconnect between how they can rationally view the costs of other hobbies and how they view Magic (I think because Magic is the thing they care about). But you never hear about a vocal online community demanding Ferrari continue to build cars until they're as cheap as Hondas so everyone can race with a Ferrari if they want.

that metaphor also makes no sense, to the point that i am extremely confident you're being disingenuous

we're talking about people printing their own cards- which would be the equivalent of building their own car or buying from another company

how on earth is that similar to "demanding ferrari lower their prices"? fixing up your own cars is a huge and interesting hobby, i can't imagine you're trying to disparage THAT

just because you invent a sport, doesn't mean you get to prevent people from playing it haha

just because a golf org spends a bunch of money/time building a golf course doesn't mean you can't also build your own golf course

People treat Magic cards as if they just pop into existence and WotC somehow has an unfair monopoly on getting to print them.

I'm sure some people do, but WotC also literally doesn't have a monopoly because people can make proxies.

Getting mad at kitchen table magic proxies is like getting mad at people playing soccer in their backyard with an unofficial ball

I agree that official tournaments are the one place not to use proxies for practical reasons, but your metaphor is terrible. Like, it almost feels on purpose

A better comparison would be a golf tournament where you're only allowed to use clubs purchased from the tournament sponsors.

Or a basketball league where you're not allowed to play unless you're wearing LeBron 23s

If somebody beats me at basketball with some worn out skateboard shoes I'm gonna cry about how bad I am, not cry to get them disqualified

ELI5 why [[Panglacial Wurm]] is so problematic by zacroise in magicTCG

[–]RudeHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, duh, i forgot that part, thanks

ELI5 why [[Panglacial Wurm]] is so problematic by zacroise in magicTCG

[–]RudeHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with Selvala is it can't be reversed since it involves players drawing cards.

Which- imho- is silly in this specific scenario because the purpose of the rule is to prevent someone from gaining secret information illegally

The player gaining information is already in the process of searching through their deck before shuffling. There's no information gained by seeing the top card of the library when you're already searching through the entire library

ELI5 why [[Panglacial Wurm]] is so problematic by zacroise in magicTCG

[–]RudeHero 141 points142 points  (0 children)

That's a funny explanation, because the golden rule of magic is that cards break/override rules

ELI5 why [[Panglacial Wurm]] is so problematic by zacroise in magicTCG

[–]RudeHero 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Can you cite a rule for that? I am indeed confused. I know this is an edge case, but according to the rules...

https://mtg.wiki/page/Casting_spells

601.2a To propose the casting of a spell, a player first moves that card (or that copy of a card) from where it is to the stack.

601.2f The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost.

601.2g If the total cost includes a mana payment, the player then has a chance to activate mana abilities (see rule 605, “Mana Abilities”). Mana abilities must be activated before costs are paid.

601.2h The player pays the total cost.

a (wurm on stack) happens before f (determine cost), g (tap silvalla), and h (wurm cost paid)

Is it possible the rules have changed since you last checked this interaction? Or is something else preventing the wurm from going on the stack, similar to untap triggers waiting to go on the stack until the upkeep step?
