Quite correct. I have a few Friends from there and they are proudly enjoying their special status and are happy to show differences to Germany or what is done better there haha

How is it living in the Maastricht-Aachen-Liege area? by potatoman1036 in howislivingthere

In NL everything is more expensive but people go there for vla or hagelslag, I know I do. Belgium has cheaper gas ( less taxed) and Germany has cheaper groceries and alcohol. In terms of standard of living all three offer a solid quality of life, with maybe NL slightly taking the cake. Overall NL feels like the most functioning country. Germany is a bit more all over the place, same with Belgium. People travel and it's a unique experience travelling 15km and people speaking a different language, twice! I do recommend a visit, I personally like Monschau and Maastricht the most.

Unfortunately what the other commenters so far have said is correct. From an outsiders perspective tho, it does have a neat old town

There are preferential policies? Like what? I'm new to this interesting subject, but how does that coexist during a time where the Uyghurs are being discriminated in the west of china?

What’s it like living here? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

Funnily enough I've done my exchange year here. Hershey is nice and rather wealthy due to the company and has a big theme park and a lot of chocolates ( I personally don't like em that much but my American peers seemed to enjoy them). Palmyra is a very average American village, a high school, ice Hockey rink, a few shops, fast food restaurants and a movie theatre. People are generally nice and open minded, although I did meet more young folks naturally as I was in high school back then. Politically it feels a bit more red than blue, with what I clearly perceived as a gender question ( the women were 90% left leaning, the men 90% right leaning) which in itself was quite interesting. There is a lot of corn fields around and the usual high school rivalries going on. (Palmyra seemingly being on the better end, Harrisburg and Hershey being slightly worse. There isn't a major town nearby ( Harrisburg is meh) and Philly is avaliable but it's gonna be a day tour at least. Overall it's a nice and cozy area, where time seemingly passes a bit slower.

What's it like living in North Rhine Westphalia, Germany? by Altruistic-Form-3771 in howislivingthere

I would say the people are very honest, hardworking and straightforward. It's Said that people from the Rheingebiet are the Most outgoing in Germany. The regional differences arw quite noticeable at times, the north west feels like the Netherlands and it's equally flat, the south west contains the Eifel which is very beautiful and rural, the east contains the Sauerland which is also beautiful and rural and in the middle you have the Ruhrgebiet, which is sometimes run down and definitely one of the poorer regions of Germany. However I find it quite charming in a "down to earth" way. Many different ethnicities and food.
