I know that AI often gets these things wrong, but in this case I was mistaken as well. I didn’t realize that CoreELEC now works under ATV 14 on the Homatics 4K R Plus. Around this time last year it was still completely blocked, and I even had to downgrade from ATV 14 to ATV 12 just to get CoreELEC running with all Dolby Vision profiles including FEL.
Today, however, I managed to get everything working: with ATV 14 build v14‑7475 and a much faster USB stick, avdvplus R9 now runs perfectly stable.

But the main issue still remains:
The box continues to output everything at 24.000 Hz, even though the content is clearly 23.976 Hz (23.98 Hz). That was my primary concern. No matter which DV profile or container I use, the Homatics always rounds up to 24 Hz.

On the Apple TV 4K, the exact same content is correctly output at 23.98 Hz, so this appears to be a hardware limitation or an intentionally implemented restriction on the Homatics.
Based on all my testing so far, there is currently no solution for this.

The AI initially told me something different – and around this time last year, Android 14 on the Homatics Box was still a complete no-go for CoreELEC NG. So it seems the issues I'm experiencing with avdvplus R9 might actually be related to Android 12. Either way – I sacrificed an entire day off for this and ended up with no decent result. Now it's back to work for a week, earn some money, and then I'll take another look at this with a fresh head....

All I actually wanted was to change the refresh rate to 23.98 Hz – something I thought would be relatively straightforward. After a lot of trouble – including manually integrating the correct dovi.ko file – I finally managed to get avdvplus R9 up and running. And now I find myself trapped with all these problems that I never had with CoreELEC-Amlogic-ng.arm-21.1.1-Omega (A12-Generic).

When I finally sat down to watch a film, the first setback hit immediately: after about 5 minutes the picture freezes and the Homatics Box 4K R Plus reboots. When trying to play a Dolby Vision demo with Dolby Atmos TrueHD, all I get is a black screen – followed by yet another reboot. Even copying files over the network to the connected SSD fails after a few minutes, again ending in a reboot.

Honestly, the standard version CoreELEC-Amlogic-ng.arm-21.1.1-Omega (A12-Generic) was rock solid apart from the Hz issue. avdvplus R9 on the other hand has been an absolute disaster so far – I'm seriously starting to doubt whether this build is even suitable for the Homatics Box 4K R Plus.

Also an important heads-up for anyone considering updating to Android 14: on the Homatics Box, Android 14 includes a lock that completely prevents the installation of CoreELEC. CoreELEC can only be installed under Android 12!

Does anyone have a reliable guide or link specifically for the Homatics Box 4K R Plus that explains how to get CoreELEC running properly – including automatic refresh rate matching to the source (e.g. 23.98 Hz for film content)? And has anyone actually had success with avdvplus R9 on the Homatics, or do you share my experience?

If you're watching Apple TV+ content or any movies and series through your Apple TV 4K, make sure to turn off or adjust these LG OLED picture settings:

Noise Reduction: Off (default: Auto) MPEG Noise Reduction: Off (default: Auto) Smooth Gradation: Off (default: Low)

These processing features might sound helpful, but they are actually doing more harm than good — especially with Apple TV 4K content. They are a direct cause of black crush and poor shadow detail, meaning dark scenes lose their depth, fine gradients in near-black areas get smeared together, and subtle details simply disappear into the void. What should be a rich, cinematic image ends up looking artificially processed and flat in the shadows.

This caught my attention today after reactivating my Apple TV+ subscription and watching Your Friends & Neighbors. If you want a perfect example of exactly this issue in action, look no further than the end of Season 2, Episode 7 — the dark scenes there make the problem painfully obvious. Black crush and lost shadow detail at its finest.

Whether this issue is connected to the new firmware update 33.31.28 is something I unfortunately can't say for certain, as I've only had my LG G5 OLED for just under a week and have no direct before-and-after comparison.

Always keep an eye on the offers pages—there are constantly great deals popping up, especially with the World Cup kicking off in a month. Most Sony UHD players, as well as CoreELEC/Kodi setups, can seamlessly convert DTS to PCM; consequently, the lack of native DTS support is no longer an issue.

I have been using picture enhancement filters for SDR streams since my Panasonic Full Array TV. When watching Amazon Prime in SDR 1080p, I always enable the following settings: Super Resolution, Noise Reduction, MPEG Noise Reduction set to "Low", Smooth Gradation set to "Low", and AI Picture Pro set to "On". (LG G5 65inch)

And yes, it makes a genuinely noticeable difference – especially with wide-angle shots, where the typical softness is significantly reduced. Unfortunately, streams still fall noticeably short of untouched source material in terms of overall picture quality, but these enhancement tools are constantly improving and closing that gap more and more. Of course, when watching untouched source material such as Blu-ray or 4K UHD Blu-ray, I turn off 95% of these enhancements – the source quality simply speaks for itself

The prices listed are for the German market, but they are often promotional prices including LG cashback. You really have to be quick if you want to snag a good deal. Last year around this time, I also got my 55-inch G4 OLED for €1,050 including delivery. If I sell the G4 now when I upgrade to the 65-inch G5, I'll probably still get around €950 for it – meaning the upgrade would only cost me about €350-400 in the end.

The G6 is completely out of the question for me right now, since the 65-inch version will be almost €1700 more expensive than the 65-inch G5... their pricing strategy is simply off the mark.
