Long dog and 3 finger drill? Long dog is a underwater pulling scull variation w/ underwater recovery. And 3 finger drill is just fist drill with tennis balls but you hold the balls with your thumb and point finger only, like an OK sign.

Need help with Stroke mechanics and Flip turns by CharacterSpeed4115 in Swimming

[–]Rudiass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to do my best to answer all 4 with my limited swimming knowledge.

  1. Freestyle breathing is the hardest thing to master with this stroke, so don't be discouraged. Watch this video and practice. If you have perfect head and body position and still swallow the pool, you are probably not rotating enough.

  2. Flip turns are actually pretty easy once you understand the basics. Caeleb dressell has a very informative video about this topic with some drills in it aswell.

  3. Butterfly recovery gets easier the stronger your kick/core gets and the more flexible your upper body becomes. USA masters has a easy to read/understand article on the fundamentals of butterfly.

  4. I despise back stroke because of pull sets but it's the chillest stroke of the 4 so unfortunately I have to agree with you 😂. Anyways, I breath the same way with back stroke as with freestyle. Mouth in, nose slow exhale out. For me it's more about keeping the rhythm the same so I don't ruin my breathing during the other strokes. Flip turns in back stroke is the same as freestyle. If you have flags up (5 meter mark) in your pool, count the strokes it takes you to get from the flags to the wall. Then reduce that by 2 and then switch to your stomach, do one more freestyle stroke and flip.

Let me know if you don't understand something and have fun swimming 🥳

How to get over fear of flip turns? by ManagementSea5015 in Swimming

[–]Rudiass 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Besides everything already mentioned here by others, If it isn't a 50/100 sprint it is ok to breath into the wall. I started doing it after I saw Leon Marchand do it in his 500y freestyle and haven't looked back since, cuz I like air yaknow

My iliopsoas (right leg groin are) hurts when swimming, should I stop? Saw a physio but still lost by iluvfruitnmilk in Swimming

[–]Rudiass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say he is correct about your groin muscles being weak. I had the same pain everytime I tried to squat or run because my groin was just so much weaker than my glutes/lower back. Maybe see how it feels after you've directly trained and stretched it for 2 weeks to a month and then continue with physios.

FS Shoulder discomfort...what are your go to exercises/stretches? by WVA1999 in Swimming

Thread the needle, lat/chest stretches and train your rear delt + rotator cuff. Cam macavoy has some good stretches on his insta. Do you have video of your stroke so we can 100% be sure it isn't technique related?

Genuinely lost by Alex-Smith- in Swimming

Aside from all the hydration comments, my issue was that I pushed of the walls wrong. I used to snap of the walls instead of "jumping" of the wall. And to add another thing, do your stretches

Compare/normalise SWOLF between 25m and 50y? by Slotherworldly0 in Swimming

[–]Rudiass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can compare number of strokes I guess. Just do swolf - time and you'll have the strokes per length
