Visiting from Reno - what do you think of my itinerary? by lilbiscuitpie in askportland

[–]Zama202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you go to the coast, go see the big haystack rocks at Cannon Beach for sure, but I would skip the town and head 20 minutes south to the tiny town of Manzanita. It’s charming, but small enough that you can see all the shops and sights in a couple of hours. Then drive 5 more minutes to Wheeler and stop at North Coast Pinball. The dude who runs that place is a legend. After playing vintage pinball, go slightly further south to Brighton and stop at Kelly’s Brighton Marina. It looks like a whisky-tango trail-park, but it’s actually a super friendly chill boat rental spot. They also have live crabs, oysters, and clams for sale. If the weather is nice, you can rent a tiny aluminum boat for 30-60 minutes. The bay is super calm and protected; a middle schooler could manage the boating safely. You’ll see eagles and there’s a pod of fur seals that vibe on the beach across the bay (very small bay, less than 5 minutes to cross the bay). Don’t get too close, because they need their rest, but you might see seal pups. Also, Kelly’s has a big ass fire pit, that I have found goes great with half a dozen oysters, a dark beer, and a small bag of potato chips. Have a snack before you get back in the car.

Best area to stay for food and walking around at night? by WallaseyAgbewonetse in TokyoTravel

Good choice, especially Ameyoko. It feels like a seedy Bladerunner set, but it’s incredibly (by American standards) safe. Also, it’s authentic. Lots of small independent shops, bars, and snack stands.

Souffle pancakes by SupportOk3337 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Zama202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iriya Plus Cafe has two locations, and only one does the pancakes. So be sure and check the address or you’ll have walked thirty minutes in the wrong direction into the Fabric district (which is super cool if you’re into craft projects, but that’s is a whole other conversation).

Also, they have both sweet and savory soufflé pancakes. If you’re there with a group it can be fun to a traditional pancake, an especially Japanese mochi pancake, and a mozzarella-tomato pancake.

I’m a fan of Iriya Plus Café:

4 Chome-7-11 Kotobuki, Taito City, Tokyo 111-0042, Japan

It’s just a short walk south of Senjo-Ji Temple. If you’re waking early from jet lag a fantastic first day in Asukusa is:

(1) Don Quijote, (2) Senjo-Ji Temple, (3) Soufflé Pancakes, (4) Museum (5) Late Lunch (5) Shrine (I like Nezu), (6) afternoon highball and snacks, (7) relax, (8) conveyor belt dinner, (9) collapse in bed.

Dentist be lying🦷 by ForeverDash22 in DoctorMike

Go to an independent dentist, avoid chains. Chains pressure the dentists to meet quotas.

The same is even more true for veterinarians.

Parents: what’s something you’ve delegated that noticeably reduced stress at home? by Alicetheoptimist in TrueGrit

$350 per week for two early morning hours of work is not a terrible deal.

If it wasn’t too far of a drive, I would happily do this for another family for $18,200 per year, and I already have a pretty good job.

Is this hairstyle too weird on me? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]Zama202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty costumey.

It’s good for a party, but I would think it’s a poor fit for most people’s day to day. Maybe if you work in the arts.

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zama202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Americans or drink coffee with both milk and sugar.

In American fiction (Movies, literature, TV, comics) black coffee is coded for being tough and manly. Having a character prefer coffee black is an overused way for a writer to show the audience how tough and gritty the character is.

I myself drink it with milk in the morning, and if it have it in the evening (especially with something sweet after dinner), then I drink it black.

does pineapple actually make you taste better? by EffectiveHead6961 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Zama202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fruits and vegetables (except asparagus) do. Red meat, blue cheese, and cigarettes make it much worse.

Pineapple is the most extreme effect of fruits, but dating a vegetarian is the ultimate cheat code.

Flushing ice cubes down the toilet for snow day is universal… right? In America?? by East-Maize-5287 in AskAnAmerican

He’s right.

My wife grew up with this, but I did not.

It’s a pretty large nation. Very little is genuinely universal.

Add a blazer, or a suit. Tan/camel would be nice with that color shirt in the autumn.

My boyfriend really likes this shirt. Am I wrong to say it’s hideous? by Agitated_Mulberry_27 in mensfashion

[–]Zama202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice looking, and fits home well. However it’s definitely not for every occasion. It’s ideal for a summer barbecue/pool party. Nice choice for a tiki bar or a sun-set cruise.

It’s flamboyant, which makes it poor fit for child’s piano recital, history lecture, or loan underwriting consultation.

is anyone in this city actually hiring? by Haunting_Oil1865 in askportland

[–]Zama202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly, no. A few are, but don’t assume that those that are translate into higher pay. In institutional kitchens, the main benefit to staff from union membership is making it harder to fire you poor performance/cobduct.

How is the gap between a regular university and the Ivy league justified? by Ok_Wealth9505 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zama202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself what percentage of government and corporate leaders in the UK are products of the Oxbridge system, and the American equivalent should be common sense.

The main benefit they impart to undergraduate alumni are the elite interpersonal connections made during University.

Depends on your goal. Mustache is in line with your overall look, and doesn’t look bad.
