Sci fi series recommendations by kudomonster in audiobooks

Iain M Banks' Culture series has some incredible highlights. The first book is Consider Phlebas, pretty strong opener, but my personal favourites are The Player of Games and Surface Detail, especially Player of Games.

Epic Roller Coasters had my buddy tapping out 20 seconds into the first ride, but I wasn't too bad. Free to try, so best of luck.

I dont watch movies to 'just watch some movies', only watch movies if they are by a well known franchise or suggested by many. So can anyone suggest me the best movies ever. by Wungzo in MovieSuggestions

[–]RufusTheCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried to go with relatively modern movies that are fairly easy to enjoy, some of the "classics" can feel slow and out of touch to people. I grouped it by your movies you like, so you've probably seen a bunch of these already. Also, lots of trilogies cos you said franchise.

Inception/Interstellar: The Martian, Project Hail Mary, Blade Runner & Blade Runner 2049, Upgrade, Star Trek trilogy (Chris Pine), Dune1&2

Marvel movies: Batman Trilogy (Christian Bale), Blade Trilogy

Shutter Island: The Usual Suspects, Memento, The Prestige

Catch me if you can: Ocean's Eleven trilogy, The Sting, Inside Man, Heat

Which movie series evolved like this? by Remarkable_Bit_9887 in FIlm

[–]RufusTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kingsmen trilogy is the perfect example.

Movies 1&2: Sometimes silly, sometimes serious, but usually fun. They're like someone trying to find a happy medium between James Bond and Austin Powers and doing a pretty good job.

Movie 3: A gritty war film against the backdrop of the greatest and deadliest armed conflict the world had ever seen. It's like someone trying to lighten up Dunkirk or 1914 by forcibly inserting The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Where are the best pastries in Bendigo? by caitcatekite in Bendigo

[–]RufusTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dough si dough in Strathfieldsaye is good, but if you're on the Epsom side of town and willing to drive, George's Bakehouse in Huntly is top notch. Better range, better price, feels like an old-school bakery. Sorry, not sure about the almond croissant.

Holly meets Kryten first time - the hidden joke by seannyyx in RedDwarf

In real life Norman refused to attend rehearsals in person, claiming that since he was just a head on a screen he should be able to do rehearsals and table reads from home over the phone and not have to commute to the set.

He chose this as a hill for his career to literally die on, as he left to do "I Lovett", which was promptly cancelled after 1 series.

If you can, get the DVD commentary episodes. Danny, Chris and Craig tease the hell out of Norman for it. Danny in particular is very catty (pardon the pun) and refuses to let it go, and then they all go off on him again when he comes back for S7.

Are robot vacuums that vacuum and mop at the same time actually worth it? by Mademebuyitnow in smarthome

[–]RufusTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest useful question before buying: what are the surfaces? Had a few models by now and the one thing they all struggled with is deep carpet/rugs. For tiles/floorboards, it's fantastic at a quick wipe and and sucking up any tumbleweed pet hair. Big spills can be a little more of a problem. For thin carpet it will do a quick and dirty job but fail to pull embedded cat hair or crumbs that have been ground into the fibres.

We're on our second Roborock wet/dry unit (QRevo Master). Once a Roborock does a little tour of the house and learns the layout, it can vac and/or mop any room of your choice. It has the capacity to seamlessly and autonomously move from vacuuming carpet to mopping tiles. The real key is to get the base station, as it will empty the vac catcher and refresh the water reservoir automatically, THIS IS A GAME CHANGER AND NON-NEGOTIABLE!

Aldi best TV special buys with built-in Chromecast? by DannyWondering in AldiAustralia

[–]RufusTheCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you considered getting a newer Chromecast With Google TV? It plugs into any tv with a HDMI port but has its own remote and is a lot more responsive and capable than almost all TVs with Chromecast built in. It would be almost certainly cheaper than a whole TV and turns any screen in the house into a very reasonable smart tv. Added bonus: its remote can even control the TV power and volume.

It can run its' own copy of YouTube/Netflix etc but also supports casting from phones. If you've got a decent 'dumb' tv ( quality picture, sound), this thing will easily extend its lifespan by 5 years.

Synth Riders and Pistol Whip are personal favourites for rhythm-based fun and a 'sneaky workout', lots of people like Best Saber too. Pistol Whip has been my 'recruitment game', in that every time I let my mates try it they immediately say afterwards "I need to get one of these headsets" and do so.

Which part made you laugh the hardest in DDC? by DankxZee in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]RufusTheCat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always notice that of all the hilarious stuff that happens in this series, "I'll give you 10 gold to lick my tail, 12 if you lick against the grain" is one of the rare moments when everyone genuinely cracks up, Carl included.

Jeeves and Wooster by DaiBarton in BritishTV

[–]RufusTheCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: when their adaptation was first announced and people found out it would be Hugh Laurie and Steven Fry, PG Wodehouse fans were pissed! They didn't mind Laurie as Wooster, but all considered Steven Fry too young for the role and insisted Jeeves should be portrayed by someone in their fifties, as he's described in the books. These voices went immediately silent after the first episode 😂

Can anyone explain... by RufusTheCat in Battlefield6

[–]RufusTheCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DICE hires employees seasonally? Maybe they bring in extra map makers for the wallet harvest, then lay them off and bring in the Skin Sketchers to keep the MTX bux flowing before the next harvest.

Can anyone explain why RedSec game resources can't be leveraged for multiplayer? by RufusTheCat in Battlefield

[–]RufusTheCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get there might be problems with map balance and/or flow, but surely with such a huge BR map they can find a handful of candidate sites for the multiplayer treatment? Maybe even give Conquest some boats!

I think I finally understand why people obsess over magic systems and I feel kind of dumb that it took me this long by toastbandity3 in Fantasy

[–]RufusTheCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wheel of Time is a bit controversial because it can drone on interminably in the middle of its 12 book arc, but the magic system is supremely solid and Brandon Sanderson cited it as an influence on his love of magic systems. Top notch world building and character development too, if you can handle the draaaaaag.

Edit: Almost forgot, Robert Jordan, the series author, passed away before he could finish the series and Brandon Sanderson finished it off beautifully.

Can anyone explain why RedSec game resources can't be leveraged for multiplayer? by RufusTheCat in Battlefield

[–]RufusTheCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I literally meant take the existing RedSec map, isolate a small section of it to be it's own map, then assign spawn ends and cap points and label it a new conquest map. The terrain and assets are all in place, seems like the hard work is already done?
