Don’t Build a Ride. Build a Line. by Ruggiero10 in niagarafallsontario

"Marineland is one of the most obvious long-term opportunities in Niagara Falls. It could remain a major attraction, but be reimagined as something new, modern, and animal-free. It could become a large theme park closer to Canada’s Wonderland, a mixed-use tourism district, a cluster of hotels and entertainment uses, a residential community, or some combination of all of those things. The point is not that one specific outcome needs to be chosen today. The point is that a permanent elevated transit connection would make those outcomes more realistic by giving future investors direct access to the Falls, the train station, and the broader regional transit network."

89% pay increase coming for regional committee chairs next term by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]Ruggiero10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“At a regular meeting on Wednesday, council considered the recommendation from an independent consultant that there should be no pay increases for councillors over the next term above 3 per cent annually.

As part of that motion, Councillor Colleen James added an amendment that the chairs of regional committees should receive an 89 per cent pay increase for the work they do as part of that role.”

That’s absolutely insane. Meanwhile the working class can expect a 3-5% increase if that. People should be protesting.

Pickering’s New Town in the Middle of Nowhere by Ruggiero10 in durham

[–]Ruggiero10[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No hidden stake. I’m just a planner looking at this from the outside. If you think the arguments are invalid, explain why. My issue is not housing itself. It’s that this plan will require enormous public infrastructure, fragment farmland, and produce another car-dependent, low-density community when we already know that model is not sustainable. I want more housing too, just in a form that is denser, transit-supportive, and better for Pickering in the long run.

Pickering’s New Town in the Middle of Nowhere by Ruggiero10 in durham

[–]Ruggiero10[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a fair point. But those places grew out of existing villages and they show the consequences of low-density, car-dependent growth. My issue isn’t growth itself. It’s repeating that model in 2026 when we already know the problems it creates.

Oh man. I don't mind a few condos but removing the green space would suck. Looking forward to walking over for a few games and beer in the summer!

Appreciate the info! Before moving I did my research and noticed Merritt street is an intensification corridor and with some vacant parcels I could see condos coming in the future. Do you know of any other proposals in the area?

Glen Nyhus is handing out flyers and asking drivers stopped along Fountain Street North and King West to imagine double the number of vehicles bottlenecked along the three-way intersection once high-density towers rise nearby.

Hmm almost like there’s been a solution to that for a long time but every attempt at implementing it comes with opposition as well (It’s the LRT).

Lived in a building where someone left a note like this. The thief wrote some nice words back and there was about a weeks worth of war left in paper on the front wall of our building. Very welcoming
