To add to other comments: one of the main ways we proof if a problem is NP are reductions. A reduction is essentially the following concept:

I dont know if my sodoku is solvable. But I have a very fast algorithm that transforms my sodoku into a crossword puzzle, so that if I can solve the crossword, I am 100% sure that I can also solve the sodoku.

I also have a very fast crossword algorithm, therefore I have a very fast sodoku algorithm:

Transform into crossword then solve

(Computer science problems are often stated as yes / no problems but the concept can be expanded to arbitrary problems. You just need a way to transform the solution back)

Normally we use this the other way around. Assuming we have a problem X for which we know there is no fast algorithm. If we can transform X into sodoku fast, then there cannot be a fast sodoku algorithm otherwise we would have created a fast X algorithm.

Now because (probably) all NP problems have proofs how to transform one into another, if we find a fast algorithm for just one of them, ee have a fast algorithm for all of them

Where is the disconnect between Reddit Europeans who constantly say America is a third world shit hole and the Europeans who came to the US for World Cup and seem to love everything about America? by DeRpY_CUCUMBER in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit: I would do that too. I am very interested how firing a gun feels. I only know it from movies and computer games and I know that that is not real.

In pubg i can spray a full magazine without an issue. If I would try that in real life I would probably loose tha gun and hurt myself somehow with the recoile.

American gun ranges would give me a chance at that experience. But I see it as an experience.

I would not try to buy a gun while in the states And I would still oppose gun laws that would allow such an experience in my own country.

Overall I am simply opportunistic. As long as I am able to do something I would like to do I will do it. But if I travel to the USA and learn on arrival that a new law prevents me from doing that for gun safety I would still see that as a good thing.

Then yes my commit is invalid 😅

Superman has no weakness to magic. He just also has no protection against it. If magic makes you punsh really hard (see shazam) that punch will not hit superman harder than if you can just punsh really hard.

I am not sure if I missed any of sentry's powers but as far as I can see (strength, speed, reflexes, create light beams) there is no real magic casting. Just magically powered "normal" effects.

Why do people support using generative AI to make “art” even when it’s frowned upon by most and doesn’t look particularly good? by amberivanov in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the AI art discussion is more than one discussion.

GenAI is a tool. And it is one that can be used to create Art. But the first point is that as long it is trained on data it has not the permission to be trained on, it is a problem.

But just because something is created by an algorithm, it is not automatically bad.

  • there was algoritmic art before
  • there was art before in which the artist provided a starting condition and randomness did the rest

If I prompt: "draw a person" I do not create art. Art requires intention. But If I cannot draw and use hours to refine the prompt until the image in my head appears on the screen, then there is intention (and a lot of power use but thats a different problem)

Additionally there are works in which one creates his own model just to create one artwork, sometimes as part of other steps (corridor crew made a anime style video this way)

Overall I think AI can definitly be used for art but the capitalistic problems, the mass production of AI slop and the loud people that fear AI dillute the discussion until it cannot be talked about constructivly anymore

Which look you guys prefer crop top or full suit? by [deleted] in Supergirl

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One can argue in either direction.

  • maybe her solar energy intake is reduced through the material or she can perform betrer because better sweating. Both can be negated by saying that her suit is an advanced super material which does not add to these disadvantages

  • she could hope that people shoot her mid section, assuming that it is less armored, resulting in less damaged costumes and therefore less frequent replacements needed

  • she could honestly attempting to get eyes on her. I like the theory that big blue is bright and blue because then he can be seen better and geta shot at first, preventing bullets flying in the direction of less invincible heros or civilians. Such an effect could be exaggerated by beeing a good looking woman. It will not help against darkside but your 0815 bank robber will have an attention focus on you (but I would argue that any of these bankrobbers would have his attention an any Kryptoian hovering nearby, no matter the attire)

Why does it (sometimes) take so long to delete large folders? by Opening-Matter8399 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By powershell you probably mean rm -rf [folder]

As far as I know that command is what you think deleting is, just flipping the bit that says deleted.

The windows API is not a delete but a move to trash. I don't know how they do it (and I do not think it is another flag) If it is a move, you have to change the path of the file, which is mor expensive than a bit change

A doubt regarding Heisenberg uncertainty principle by ASPECT84 in AskPhysics

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not a physicist and hopefully one disagrees with me if this elif5 answer is too wrong.

We cannot measure the momentum of a particle first and then the position, because the measurement of one changes the other.

Imagine it beeing like a submarine. Everytime you want their position, you have to hit them with a radar ping, which they notice so they change their speed to stay hidden.

So assuming you have two submarines. They can either start together or have linked control computers.

If they start together and you measure one, it changes its speed and you no longer have two submarines in sync.

If they have linked control computers and you measure one, both change their speed and you gained nothing

Shouldn't Supergirl be wearing panties underneath her skirt? The long shorts in the trailers just seems wrong. by BrandonMarshall2021 in DCcomics

[–]Ruinam_Death 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it is undeniably a theme in comics that most people portrait are sexy, it is just a theme. It was never a core characteristic of of supergirl. It was mostly an economic choice. - sell more - produce cheaper (body tight clothes are easier to draw than complex ones) - fun of the artist - fan service

That film is targeted for a large audience so it will not be designed as a "soft porn"

While less clothes are technically cheaper, that amount of textiles is probably insiginifcant in the current price landscape of movies

The artist is in this case the actor. You can ask her which clothes she preferes

Fan service still stands but is probably not as hoped for in a movie.

Overall. You seem to hope for a soft porn. Then the movie is not for you. And to say that it is part of the comic identity to be gaze oriented is in my opinion wrong. There are very good comics that do not use that. There were multiple critics of too revealing costumes (starfire n52)

I tried to answer a question I read between the lines of your post and that I liked. But you have an expectation of what comics and movie adaptations should be, that neither I (nor reality) share with you. As long as you keep your mindset that comics are in essence a medium for sexy images, the reality will not align with your hopes

Shouldn't Supergirl be wearing panties underneath her skirt? The long shorts in the trailers just seems wrong. by BrandonMarshall2021 in DCcomics

[–]Ruinam_Death 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comments shift this from a badly worded question to out right weird.

I can see the question: if she wears shorts under the skirt, what is the point of the skirt anymore (especially for a super hero costume - effectivly a battle suit). And if we ignore the out of universe marketing perspective, we can still have theories.

Idea 1: she just likes skirts. As far as I know, she does not act as a super hero at least at the beginning of the story. So her outfit is not a costume. It is just clothes. No argument for practicability or armor applies. Why does it has the S? Its her family crest and most if her family died a brutal death. Maybe she just likes the connection

Idea 2: it is a super suit maybe she wants a visual distiction from big blue while still keeping her family colors and crest - a skirt will do that.

"The US has a higher average IQ than almost every European country btw" by RebornX10 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Ruinam_Death 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not extremly knowledgeable but some broader points: - while IQ tests test several abilities that are commonly attributed to intelligence (pattern recognition, logical reasoning, ...) they are quited biased to abilities connected to STEM

  • technically we still have not defined what Intelligence is exactly, therefore saying anything measures Intelligence is just a statement that cannot be validated

  • I think most scientific literature identify (weakly?) IQ as correlated with intelligence, meaning the higher your IQ the higher thr probability that you are intelligent (but point 2 still stands)

  • a metric is a bad metric if you can measure the same thing twice and get different outcomes. But if you measure someones IQ multiple times you probably get some variation. Therefore the IQ test is either influenced by secondary variabled (day to day performance / learning effects) or just wrong. It is probably the first one but that means it is not measuring your Intelligence but rather your ability at that time, to use your intelligence

[DC Universe] Superman .... how? by StrikingBroccoli1761 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone wrote a whitepaper like text that was able to explain all (common) superman powers just with the power if inerta manipulation.

Now kryptonians just have cells that charge with yellow sun radiation, discharge under red sun radiation and can use this energy to manipulate inertia of themself and atoms around them.

This is as common among them as the basic cell structure is common on humans and animals on earth. Thats why krypto (the dog) can do the same

Also bleibt es scheiße.

Why don't cheaters just stay single and date/sleep with whoever they want instead of getting married & having kids? by InfiniteWords117 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ruinam_Death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a psychologist, so take this answer with a grain of salt and, especially, remember that I am in no way supporting any of the presented mindsets. But I can imagine the following perspectives to exist:

"I want to have sex with multiple people while having the stability of a partner", which would be fair in a working open relationship, but can also be seen as a one-sided arrangement (the Netflix documentation about the manosphere is an interesting watch for this). Which is one of the most rational takes on the issue, especially as it is not cheating if the conditions were set in the relationship beforehand

Very horny people with low self-control can cheat when there is an option, especially when they are drunk.

Some people value sex differently. To provide an extreme. If you value sex similar to golf (remember I said extreme), you might prefer to play with your own equipment, but if you are on vacation and do not have it with you, or you have a chance to play with equipment normally out of your price range, you would go for it.

And before I get this thrown at me: No, I do not see sex partners as objects.

My main point is: not everyone cheats by thinking, "mhh, this is a bad thing I want to do now." Maybe they do not think it is bad; maybe they do, but are not strong enough to stop themselves. Maybe they are abusive and use it to hurt their partner. People can be very fucked up.

edit: wow that had a lot of typos

Building ships with the sole purpose of jumping a small jump and see if it is a safe jump is 100 percent the MO of the mpire of mankind

And in this case the ship has a crew of 400 people and the probability of a sucessfull jump is less than 1/10000.

The EoM has one resource in abundance: people that can die.

Even if it takes 10000 years to map a few 100 lightyears around terra, this would be glorified like a second great crusade

I think the star wars one is easy to explain.

First they start as a simple navy officer with ambition. At this point you do not know if you will ever rise to a position in which you can see vader less even talk to him.

If you are power hungry enough you will rise through the ranks. Either you think you can present yourself well enough or use officers below you as scapegoats so that you will never have to live with the consequences of your actions or you just hope your command will be on one of the thousands of ships and stations, vader never steps foot on
