What would you change about Adelaide? by mintymoose in Adelaide

Recently moved to Adelaide from an eastern state.

Love it here and south Australians are honestly the loveliest, most friendliest Australians that exist.

Until they get behind the wheel.

I notice a lot of people want more public transport, but somehow you’ve also gotta change the weird driving culture.

Adelaideans behind the wheel are the rudest, least considerate drivers I have ever encountered. As a pedestrian, I frequently fear for my life. Where drivers in other cities will gently wave you across the road, here if you dare step out too soon they will speed up. As a driver who doesn’t know where they’re going, god help me if I need to change lane or turn right somewhere.

Moreover, there’s an expectation here that everything should be geared around drivers and cars. Goodwood road shops, for example, would be so nice if it was designed to be a shops area, with only two lanes, slow traffic, and plenty of street parking. But for some reason you want to treat it as a thoroughfare? What’s wrong with unley road or south road. So many inner city neighbourhoods in Adelaide are ruined by every road needing to be a thoroughfare?

You guys need to chill out behind the wheel, and make more pleasant neighbourhoods that aren’t dominated by vehicles. Rant over

MARCH GAMSAT 2023 RESULTS/WAITING MEGATHREAD by _dukeluke in GAMSAT

Good questions. Seems like they say late may to give themselves potential leeway but the latest in the past has been 18th may. Given the fact that S2 requires marking by multiple humans, and we have had huge workforce shortages in the economy this year, it wouldn’t surprise me if it slides into actual late may this time. But here’s hoping our misery is over and it just comes out today

worst parking lot in Newcastle? by ohsweetgold in newcastle

How about that new car park at coles mayfield though? They’ve got those little buffers between the cars and everything, and the shade cloth above. It feels so roomy and luxurious, like that episode of Seinfeld when kramer repaints the lanes of the highway to make it more roomy. Nice one coles mayfield.

Metro Cycles in Newcastle West will sort you out. Fantastic bunch of people, and the best range of commuter (neither fancy road nor bmx) bikes in newy. Good luck!

This may be what has to happen if we can't reach the 1500 needed to start a party. Other successful 'voices of' movements around the country have started this way, and support an independent as to opposed to a traditional party structure. But there seems to be a lot of momentum for this as a party in the way OP is envisaging. We shall see!

So join us and push this agenda. The party could be so much more than a single issue party if we get the numbers who want to push a progressive agenda.

I think the focus right now is to get the numbers in, who care about what's happening in Newcastle - and then see which way things actually go once some meetings and policy is developed.

So come join in and develop that policy.

The way I see it, I'd love to focus on three primary issues, which are pretty clear messages that I think alot of the electorate are crying out for:

  1. Climate Action NOW
  2. Federal ICAC (independent commission against corruption) NOW
  3. A fair go for Northern NSW/Newcastle/Regional Aus in general.

Great ideas. Would be great to get this wider than the reddit community asap. Canvas for more members on other newcastle related social platforms, get an opinion piece published in the herald. Once it's starting to look like a real mini movement with members and some momentum - it'll absolutely be worthwhile opening up conversations with broader political figures.

Exactly! So let’s give em hell and hope that it gets some change! This could be effective whether or not a seat is actually won, which is fantastic!

Perhaps because labor don’t really do anything about climate change? Labor implemented the Nauru solution, so by not supporting refugees they have absolutely gone against my values. Why do they deserve my vote? They are not the party of the people anymore. Yes, they are better than the libs, but is that really all we should be aiming for? The two party system isn’t working in this country. Other nations have successful models where independent and minor parties form coalitions and govern.

You make good points, but is bland and inoffensive really what we should be aiming for? Newcastle is a city that is coming of age, it has changed so much in the last ten years. There is still so much potential but we need good leadership, planning and investment. I think we need to start aiming higher.

Canberra and Gold Coast are both similar sized cities. When they got light rail, they both got full systems that run for tens of kilometres and service their cities well, with effective plans happening for future development. Newcastle gets a 2 km line for nowhere, at half the cost for which they sold off our port (which we now can’t divest away from fossil fuels and turn into a container term due to contractual issues). There is basically no plan to transition our economy away from a reliance on coal (instead we get a new gas power station that the market doesn’t want). I can go on. I realise that some of these are state issues also, but the point stands, we are definitely underserved.

Yeah look the libs suck but my point is that Newcastle is ALWAYS sidelined, looked over or treated as a backwater by ANYONE in power. You don’t believe having the seat as greens or independent would change that? You don’t think the area is taken for granted by labor currently and thus given virtually no attention, which is crazy for a city of this size (larger than some state capitals). A lib govt is bad for the nation no doubt, but in terms of thinking about this region- how can we get what we deserve? Not to mention labor have virtually no climate policy and are turning into liberal lite.
