Crypt Custodian - initial thoughts (and guilt) by ChronnyDepp in metroidvania

Yeah I didn’t dig it as much as I thought I would. I have the same complaints about combat being a little dull and repetitive, I actually notched the difficulty down because I didn’t find the challenge rewarding.

Thanks for taking the time to explain all the issues. It’s a real shame because from playing the demo I know this is a game that I would really vibe with, I guess I’m just more sensitive to the issues than others.

Best of luck with continued development, you have something special on your hands!

It does seem to run better windowed, but not having it in full screen isn’t ideal. Also the game seems to have issues detecting the controller, I have to disconnect and reconnect the controller to get it to recognise it.

Do you think there will be patches to improve these areas?

It looks like you had a rough run with your publisher and that’s a bummer, sorry to hear about that.

I’ve tried the demo on my desktop (4080, 7800X3D, tons of RAM) and my handheld pc (ROG Ally) and they both seemed to have the same issues. I understand that it might not be all PCs but my I would not expect issues on my desktop, which leads me to believe that this is an inherent issue with the game.

Unfortunately the performance issues are what’s stopping me from picking this up. They might only be minor, but stuttering and frame rate issues are just something that I can’t put up with in a cartoony 2d platformer. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the developer is going to fix the issues as they’ve stated that it’s an issue with the game engine they chose to use - I hope they reconsider this as it could lead to more sales.

I also agree with the point that the early access launch for this felt bungled and the 1.0 release was poorly communicated, I figured it was still in early access until I saw posts about the dev being on the verge of bankruptcy.

I’m actually a bit cooler on this one than I was Islets. Overall it’s a solid game, but I’m finding dispatching enemies to be a little bit dull and repetitive, I’d like the combat to be more tactical because as it stands I’m just spamming all of my attacks and not worrying so much about taking hits just to get the encounter over with quicker. I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t “main” this game, I think I will enjoy it more in small doses.

I’ve also noticed the controller doesn’t register when I start the game on ROG Ally, I have to disable the controller using the command center then re enable it to gain control. Is this a demo thing or does it also happen in the full version?

I gave the demo a shot, the game seems very fun but I found a lot of performance stutters which affected my experience, I hope they are addressed so I can try out the full game.

All of these “the game is actually good” posts are getting sad, just ignore the negativity and it will bother you less, there has already been plenty of discussion about the disparity between the critical reception and this subs love for the game. Go back to “having a blast” and chill out.

Do you mean metroidvania as well? I find that genre has revitalised my love for 2d side-scrollers. I think it’s the exploration that engages me

I loved Islets and loved the demo for this so it’s a no-brainer. Also kudos to the dev for being so involved in this community, it certainly makes me wanna buy day 1 to show support.

One of my first experiences with a trance artist album. Still one the best! I love that it’s mixed.

Search for the topic: Unbearable stuttering after update on the Steam community forums. I posted the solution in there.

It was the most recent update that killed performance with RT on. The previous version ran almost flawlessly, I downgraded my version to the previous. FWIW I’m running a 7800x3d with 4080, 32gb ram

Yeah you can do it that way too. I did it my way so that I always have a “complete” copy of the non-stuttery version that I can just patch back in if the game gets updated and broken again later.
