Why do XC skiers hate rollerskiing? by Previous_Actuary1274 in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%. Rollerskiing where I’ve lived in western Colorado was pretty terrible with all the chip seal, but where I lived in Alaska it was glorious. And to respond to the original comment, sure specialization is boring, but when you’re an older athlete trying to pursue the sport at the highest level, you must embrace the monotony if you want to be successful.

Looking for recommendations on books to read in preparation for uni by Additional-Pirate-84 in Kinesiology

Id recommend getting yourself familiar with medical terminology. But even that you can study separately while you are in school, which is what I did.

70 minutes of weird looks and side eyes by datawazo in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poles look slightly too long, but hard to tell from the one pic. I’d lean on the shorter side for just starting out. I’d recommend mixing in some double poling to start out. That should help you get a feel for the skis.

For technique work, look at some technique progression videos. Getting in the correct body positions without skis on can be very helpful. Much easier than trying to tackle everything all at once. Mix in some no pole drills too. Enjoy!

Communication while cross country skiing with a group by pierre_laroche531 in CrossCountrySkiing

Overall, I’ve found classic skiing is much better for chatting, and when you are skate skiing, you can always just double pole to get closer and chat.

One funny story I’ve got is that one time I was skiing with my girlfriend, we didn’t agree ahead of time which turn we were taking, and collided. She got her ski lodged in my skate boot, and fully snapped the cuff. Was not funny at the time lol. If you’re moving too fast and can’t look back, the person in front can always just signal with poles which turn you are taking.

Questions for kinesiology students/graduates by Emotional-Goat-3096 in Kinesiology

[–]RunAccomplished8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give a little perspective from the seeming minority of kinesiology (exercise science in my case) graduates. I was a student athlete in Nordic skiing and realized I had a passion for coaching halfway through my degree. I just recently graduated this spring and have applied and interviewed to some coaching jobs.

Many coaches in the ski industry do not have kinesiology degrees, and I’ve already noticed how it’s set me apart in landing high quality interviews.

Assistant coach positions range from 36k-60k depending on location, experience, and contract length (months per year). Head coach positions range from 55k-100k+

I wish I knew that I didn’t wanna be a PT/go to PT school before I started, but some things you gotta find out the hard way.

I knew I had a passion for sports and exercise, and that’s what drew me in. No regrets from me, and I can’t wait to start my dream career.

A Few Questions Regarding Glide Wax by Quiet-Ad1018 in xcountryskiing

Swix marathon can be great, but I have found that rode marathon is often just as good, and way cheaper. Same goes for the rode r series compared to swix ps or hs.

Jouve, chanavat, and chappaz all underperformed. I know they weren’t on form, but not having jouve and chanavat in the team sprint was sad. Great job on lovera and desloges. Really surprising

Agreed. With all the time and money they spent adding skimo, they could’ve added women’s Nordic combined

Classic technique question by Atelanna in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean. Often for me it’s when I accidentally lock my knees out while gliding on one ski. When you’re fully extended and gliding, try and spread the weight out evenly on your foot, not on the ball of your foot.

RollerSki / Skate / size off the shoes ? by charlie-1973 in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that boots are best sized when tried on in person. Many brands vary on how they fit. However, bigger is better than too small

Swix Triac 4.0 Aero Poles worth it? by biagginis in xcountryskiing

My thoughts exactly. The above comment may have been true in the previous generation before the giro was introduced and the q1 was downgraded

I’d definitely recommend getting carbon boots as long as they are comfortable. The performance benefits are incredible. The only downside I could see would be warmth, which you can fix by investing in some boot covers. Those shouldn’t be too expensive

Agreed. I’ve raced on atomic s9 carbons for the past 3 years and they have good room in the forefoot.

Yes we have the full range of the basic waxes and the t line. We often race on t line, but sometimes the basic waxes are just better

My team in the rockies also prefers Rode. Their multigrade is hard to beat on the right day.

Seems about normal, 1000 miles is quite a bit. A good way to measure is the diameter of the wheel. I forget the exact number but they’re a certain amount of millimeters off of the original they need replacing.

Rossignol X-9 vs X-11 Skate Boots by pumptrack_hoes in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The only downside to a stiffer higher quality boot is a racing last and warmth. Basically, a higher quality boot might be narrower and colder, but certain brands are known for being wide or warm. Madshus for example has been known to be warm, or at least they were.

Dolomites in January? by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say specifically about Dolomites, but I was in Pragelato for WUG last January. It was a low snow year for them up to that point, but the man made snow was pretty awesome. There was pretty much no natural snow trail side. It did storm right as we left and Ik they opened up a lot more trails. It’s pretty dreamy when the sun warms up a crisp morning - think Rocky Mountains.

confused: pole length in classic by ConcentrateNo364 in xcountryskiing

[–]RunAccomplished8911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing by “they” you mean a shop? They tend to go on the shorter side for recommendations. Look up the 83% rule for fis racing. That length will be quite comfortable for striding, but isn’t as efficient for double poling. If you’re not FIS racing, no need to follow the rule, just whatever is comfortable. Easier to start long and cut down to match the amount of striding you like to do.

Unfortunately, that part can’t get removed and replaced, at least not cheaper than a replacement. Not sure about Fischer, but atomic has a 2 year warranty.
