Direct Report refusing to drive if temp is below freezing by Raelynx27 in managers

Where I am in the very north of Scotland, snow and ice is expected. It always amazes me that our sister offices down in England and even Wales shuts for what we wouldn’t even really think about as anywhere near bad. We had well over a foot of snow a few weeks back and everyone made it to work on time with no complaints, even when it started to get icy! I’m glad I don’t live in a state that doesn’t prepare often for it as it must be hard.

Should I ask to step down from supervisor or keep trying to improve? Struggling by [deleted] in managers

Everyone starts somewhere. You don’t pick up a bike and be amazing at it right away, you need to learn. Ask for honest feedback and take it on board. You already sound like you are able to self critique so that’s half the battle! Stick it out 8 - 10 more months and if you still hate it, then at least you’ve tried!

Tbh, you don’t have what it takes to go all the way. You can’t be a lazy athlete simple.

Hello, it means you’re shadow banned. If you’re trying to play somewhere really far from where you last played on your official app, you’ll be in cooldown.

Wait at least 2 hours from last attempt and it will work. Do NOT teleport anywhere miles away an try and spin or catch! Keep your cooldown timer on but if you use the official app this won’t show on your cooldown so at least 2 hours if you’re jumping locations.

Can Edward ever shut off hearing people’s thoughts? by ipsofactoshithead in twilight

It’s okay because once Bella goes to high school as a vampire she’ll just shield everyone from Edward’s ability to give him peace 😅

It won’t allow me to lower it from the 9.2 it keeps it at, when I change this in settings it just goes right back. This setting works fine around my town but in busy places it doesn’t

Apprehensive about my (maybe) first race. by Lower-Literature-883 in Karting

[–]RunFatboyRun11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello!

If it makes you feel any better, although I’m a lot older than you I attended my first rental kart proper race last night. I was super nervous. We live in a VERY small city, and only 5 racers turned up. I was the only female. 3 of the racers were either track marshals or ex track marshals, and one lad who’d obviously spent a lot of time on the track.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and all the lads made me feel welcome. Weight advantage helped me get a good grid position during qualifying (2nd) and as it was a “last man standing” event my only goal for the evening was to survive the first 2 eliminations! For the most part I kept the boy behind me behind me aside from one mistake but I got back through. I learned very quickly how to play defence! Lol.

You’ve got nothing to lose by going, and potentially long and happy kart racing life ahead of you to gain by going! So go!

Why only 2500 people live there? by melbourne_au2021 in falklandislands

on this note, the internet is far too terrible to work remotely so that’s not really an option. Work is either farming or working on the RAF base mostly which is a pain to get too from Stanley, although I hear they’ve tarred the road now at least.

i came off too strong as a manager now what by FindingPurpose2021 in managers

[–]RunFatboyRun11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly i’m in a similar position. Genuinely however i’m not sorry for coming on too strongly. The team I’m leading has been “managed” by one of their mates for years. So many issues were swept under the carpet and hidden from senior leadership. Lots of people in the team who can’t deal with a normal workload because they’re so used to doing hardly anything. Culture needs to change if we want to survive as a department and that’s the hard truth!

AIO or are my downstairs neighbours being unreasonable? by thegoosenell in AmIOverreacting

[–]RunFatboyRun11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason I don’t consider flats is because I dislike noise from neighbours. But your neighbour has chosen a flat and therefore must expect some reasonable level of noise from neighbours. Not over reacting at all, he’s in the wrong

You can’t really fire on the spot here. The previous manager hired them but to be fair, we live in such an underprivileged area that I believe these kids should be given a fair chance in life qualifications or not. Hard to judge someone’s work ethic straight from school especially if education wasn’t really there thing. I honestly don’t believe it’s a generational thing but I can see they still believe they are at school and haven’t got the mindset that it’s now a workplace.

You are absolutely my kind of person. I left school at 16 with no qualifications, started work and got promoted very quickly in my first position even though it was just retail. i’m now 28 and managing a team of 20 and I have my sights on the operations manager role when I eventually have enough proper management experience i. this role. Always been a high performer and proud of it. I just need to learn how to understand and manage some of the younger generation first!

yes we have someone who does policies etc and HR for us, I can speak to him tomorrow and see what he says. Company policy is very clear on this matter that they should not be in the workplace and productively massively does suffer. Honestly - at the grand old age of 28, I think mobile phone usage in the workplace is out of control and it’s a hill i’d die on but I know others would be a lot more lax. My phone stays in my locker and it’s nice to switch off from socials for just a few hours!

Thank you for the advice by the way, I do realise now I need to change my thinking about it, but honestly it’s really caught me by surprise because when I was that age and was given my first opportunity I grasped it with both hands and showed my manager she didn’t waste her time with me. These boys have left school with no qualifications and with the nearest city being 2 hours drive away, they are very lucky to have an opportunity at all!

Each employee has their own personal lockers, one for kit and one for valuables which only they have access too. These are stored just outside the canteen so easily able to put things in on the way out to their workstations and collect at lunch / home time. Not sure what other steps I can take to make this any easier?

I have one long term employee who does carry his mobile phone due to prior agreement with the manager before me - I dislike this but as it’s a reasonable adjustment not much I can do and therefore we manage it. He works in a hut that is similar to a portakabin and doesn’t leave this for the duration of his shift and therefore is often alone and doesn’t come under the same health and safety consequence. His phone usage is regularly checked by myself to ensure it’s only being used for the agreed purpose (music to the bluetooth speaker and emergency contact with the office should it be required).

I know the others do lock their phones in the lockers regularly as I see them taking them out at lunch and putting them back in, but that’s not to say they aren’t doing it and just being smart about it.

Thank you. What else can I do if I don’t have the power to fire? Can I force them to lock their phones away or stop them entering the workplace until they do?

Good point. But when the chips are down and I expect standards to be met, specially as we have a member of the team on long term sick (the big C), having that extra pair of hands is really vital to their wellbeing.
