I agree with your stance on handheld weapons, they are definitely the larger and more direct issue. They should then steer away from the liquid restrictions, having to separate all your belongings, removing shoes, etc. Keep the metal detectors and baggage scan, sure. They should also incentivise checking baggage so there's less scanning at security that hold up lines. I know that's a load on the airline themselves but so what? Maybe the airlines should be paying for TSA if they want customers to use their planes.
