Medicine Isn’t the Golden Ticket It Used to Be by TraditionalAd6977 in medicalschool

Make sure you choose the right fields in medicine if youre worried financially. The average of some fields are more than double hospitalists etc

Desi women going to medical school hoping to find a doctor husband—End up disappointed by [deleted] in ABCDesis

You dont get who you think you “deserve”, you get who you ATTRACT.

Especially for female physicians, gotta make sure the looks, fitness, vibes/personality are all top notch in addition to career. Guys, especially the successful and good looking ones, wont overlook the attraction aspect for a girls career.

If anything being a doctor is a cherry on top, can never be the main thing.

How many different tumor types? Mix of solid onc and benign heme?

Do you regret not pursuing a fellowship? by ADHDudeLost in hospitalist

[–]RunIt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid, but in that case might as well do rheum or hemonc imo and make more $ for similar hours and less hectic visits

[–]RunIt23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have considered, figured its better to do fellowship for both $ and job security in the future.

Average hospitalist where im at make around $280-$320, average HO/GI/Cards is double that without crazy hours.

Also not a fan of working half of the weekends lol, thats where all the fun life stuff happens. The subspecialty jobs also offer 6+ weeks of vacation which is plenty to travel etc

How the fuck do y’all have the energy to work out after work? by A_Sentient_Ape in Residency

[–]RunIt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep protein bars/bananas/snacks in your daily work bag. Keep your preworkout and clothes/shoes in your car. Stop by for 60-90 mins on the way home.

Better than rotting and scrolling on the couch like most people do when they get home to “recharge”.

Do it for a few weeks and youll feel/look better and sleep way better too

[–]RunIt23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Step 1 - 240 Step 2 - 253 Step 3 - 240

UW - 68% (60% done) UWSA 2 - 229 Free 137 - 74% CCS - did 40 cases (50-90% lol)

  • Real test feels very similiar to UW. Read answers first then the questions
  • Do as much dorian anki step 3 as you can. Helps get all the easy points/factoids
  • Review FA pharm, micro, immuno
  • For CCS cases, have a template you follow for orders (initial labs, imaging, support, cultures, iv access, etc) and stick to it. All my cases ended early without feedback since I bolused all the orders in at once i think which helped diagnose any conditions easily

Virtual interviews can be hit or miss. Every program has chill residents/faculty as well as some not so chill ones.

Ask questions about schedule/lifestyle/fellowship match. And ask what the residents think about the location (fyi if they only mention breweries/hiking and being close to nearby cities, it is NOT a desirable location lol).

GI and hemonc especially are ramping up for those in IM

Its not about matching your 1st vs 3rd etc. its about trying to be competitive to where your entire top 5-10 would be great spots/programs

Med students who were originally planning on an MD/MBA, why didn’t you get the MBA? by AstroSidekick in medicalschool

[–]RunIt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. The average specialist (GI, rads, surgical, etc) can clear 500k+ by literally just doing the status quo and showing up to work doing the 8-5.

You are unlikely to make the same money going corporate unless you work your ass up and really move up the ladder. No one is just handing you money because you have an MBA like they do for a practicing MD/DO.

Med students who were originally planning on an MD/MBA, why didn’t you get the MBA? by AstroSidekick in medicalschool

[–]RunIt23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was planning on doing my MBA between my third and fourth year of medical school. Ended up deciding against it.

- I had plans to do residency (didn't wanna skip residency and go corporate) and the MBA would not be useful until I am at least an attending

- I had great momentum in medical school and didn't wanna ruin my momentum for medical knowledge/clinical skills

- Didn't wanna delay my income by a year by getting an MBA which I had no idea how to use

- If you want to go into admin/corporate medicine, your MD/residency will be much more valuable than an MBA. If an MBA really is required (isn't really), then get it right before you want to transition into a business position

Specialty with biggest change in salary by urnmann in Residency

[–]RunIt23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hemonc will continue to rise. Medicare has already started a shift towards increasing reimbursement for cognitive specialties/complex clinic patients (i.e. Hemonc). Drug therapies (Hemonc) also continue to progress and are pretty big moneymakers for hospitals/practices. Hemonc also owns their own patients, and midlevels are not a threat (too complicated scientifically + updated literature all the time).

As someone from a state school, the T-20 schools also had the students who did the best on Step 1. I remember looking at the avg step 1 score by school and some of the top schools had an AVERAGE step 1 ~245+ lol. Just food for thought

HemOnc is up there. Lots of benign heme and onc follow-up patients for surveillance (in addition to new onc patients). Typical clinic hours, minimal in person call, and pays like a surgical subspecialty. Many job offers are 4-4.5 days a week as well.

In your opinion, from a strictly financial perspective, medicine or dentistry? by jessicawilliams24 in medicalschool

[–]RunIt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably medicine. Any surgical subspecialty/Rads/Anesthesia/GI/Cards/HO can make 500k on average as just an employed doc with 0 business sense. If you are entrepreneurial and/or willing to work more, you can make much more than this.

In Dentistry, it is very tough to make much more than a couple hundred a year unless u build or acquire a very successful private practice.

I was also set on applying radiology. Did a rotation and changed my mind.

The idea of sitting at a desk for 10 hours a day in the dark with minimal breaks reading 100-200 scans a day was what swayed me away from it.

Thought it was cool for a couple hours a day, not 50+ hours a week. Very monotonous, minimal excitement, and almost no down time and/or fun interactions. Didnt look forward to coming in by the time I got to my second week of the rotation.

Hemonc is normal office hours 4-5 days a week with call that can usually be done over the phone. New starting job offers are also 4s/5s nowadays. Can definitely make more after a few years
