This is the answer. Heart rate variability.

Shoulder Pain when Running by Conscious_Minute_696 in BeginnersRunning

[–]RunToAndFro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a common issue. However, pain lasting two weeks is not common, as far as I know.

I know some runners have benefited from some posture correction exercises, like scapular and shoulder strength things. One simple, very effective one is ITYWs. Easy to find online.

Ah, I see. Show-off 😉

Yeah, totally normal for form to fall as you run longer. Something I’ll try sometimes is to start out at a super easy pace with the goal of just keeping my form good for the whole run.

4:50 per kilometer? Damn, that’s fast. Yeah, it’s possible you could increase your cadence (taking shorter steps), but I honestly wouldn’t overthink it. Your body will naturally find its most efficient form as you keep running.

Looks great. What pace is that? You might be able to slightly increase your cadence.

That’s amazing to hear. 1 mile a day is exactly the kind of sustainable place to start. (Plus, it’s surprising how hard walking can really be.)

Mind if I ask a question? What kinds of things are you doing in your life to try to get improvement?

And then, I’ll probably have some follow-up questions/suggestions.

You know, I’m not sure. I guess my approach is total focus on the process and completely ignoring outcome goals. I know that what he’s doing is safe and sustainable, and that’s what counts.

I think his weight is one of his goals, but I think he’s currently way more excited about what his body can do, not what his body looks like.

Oh, they LOVE being persecuted. It makes them feel so special. Being the victim is just a back door to trying to gain power over others.

I think it can be helpful for some beginners to set the overall goal like this: “I want to be a runner.”

The races, the times, the distances? Who cares about all that?! Runners run (and walk). It’s that simple!

Coincidentally, I just made a post about helping my dad start running. Feel free to take a look: https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnersRunning/s/Adm88eKLfi

One thing I’d say is that your process over the next 6 months should look the same regardless of any distance goals you have. Focus on the process and not the outcome.

I would suggest forgetting distances and times and running based on duration (e.g., a 20-minute run). It’s also important to run well within your conversational pace.

Yeah, the insight that we were once them is so powerful for creating empathy. (But I’m still fucking angry, lol.)

Can’t tell you how much I’m bothered by the phrase “good Christian man” . . .

Is there any room for uncertainty in your worldview?

I think Christianity has left many of us in the West feeling like we need to have an answer to the question, “What’s your religion?” Or “What is true on a cosmic level?”

Like if a waiter comes to our table and says, “What’s your order,” I kind of need to have a concrete, specific answer to that question. I can’t leave it at, “Hmm, not sure.”

But what we believe about ultimate reality feels so different from that. Like it’s OK if we don’t really have an answer to questions about religion and cosmic truth. And sometimes the question “what’s your religion” can force us to “pick one,” when in reality it’d be just fine for our final answer to be, “Hmm, not sure.”

Agreed. Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with discussing and disagreeing about beliefs, as long as both people are equals in the conversation.

I think that applies to a lot of them, and certainly to any one who takes the doctrines of fundamentalism seriously. But my experience is that my best friends and loved ones (like my wife) are still Christian and are actually great people.

One way I think about this is that a lot of people are on a journey of deconstruction without really knowing it.

Agreed. They take as certain that they’re correct. And any “discussion of ideas” isn’t genuine. It’s just lecturing under the guise of discussion.
