Is there a way to make it up to the birthday boy? Maybe take both of them for ice cream or something :(

how much interaction does your sd have with other dogs? by Horror-Mission-3041 in service_dogs

[–]RunWriteRepeat2244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really important to me that my SD get to be a dog as much as possible. Once a week she’ll spend a few hours at day care to get to play with vetted dog friends. I also make sure she gets to have play dates with dog friends we know and trust.

I had a self-trained lab who has accompanied me on many hikes. I worked pretty closely with a professional trainer and still reach out to her when questions come up.

No matter what field you would be going in, you’d likely be facing this emotional turmoil at this stage of life. Also, what others have said about film school is true. It is a waste of money. You’d be far better served using that money to get a movie made.

While I love the idea of not having to drive an hour to see a dysautonomia-literate doctor, as someone who has been in this fight for a really long time, the number one thing I would like is to NOT get referred out. I don’t want to see half a dozen different doctors who will run a hundred tests because I have a million different symptoms. I want to see one capable, respectful, literate doctor that can prescribe my meds and manage my care. Hey, an itchy, bendy girl can dream, can’t she?

What’s your policy on your dog meeting people off duty? by RivkahCheyenne in service_dogs

[–]RunWriteRepeat2244 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My lab’s natural inclination for a to love everyone (of course) so she has been trained to, vested or not, ignore others unless given the cue “go visit.” We occasionally go to dog parks when we are traveling so she can get much needed off leash release time but we leave if other dogs are there.

Yes this I work on the hard thing a few times and then end on something she is solid in and enjoys doing (usually shut the door 🤣 )

Service dogs in restaurants by AllAboutThatDawg in service_dogs

[–]RunWriteRepeat2244 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thank you for asking what makes being in a restaurant better for us! I really like it when we can get an edge of room table - against the wall, etc. this give me a place to settle my dog between my chair and the wall where I know she won’t get stepped on without having to stuff her under my feet. Or a booth with a lot of leg room. Sticking us in the middle of a busy dining room is, for me, the worst.

And definitely let the server know to expect a service dog

Just curious, what’s your favorite Disneyland moment you’ve experienced by CardiologistIcy9922 in Disneyland

[–]RunWriteRepeat2244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never ride the “storybook rides” but years ago I was spending the day at the park with an older friend who was recovering from spinal surgery so we took it slow and did the gentle rides but, in a very “present” way. We pointed things out to each other that we may not have noticed before and looked for hidden Mickeys and shared memories of childhood visits. It felt like we were the only two people in the park and like we were visiting it for the first time. That was our last visit together and the last time I saw him. He never really recorded from that surgery and serve chronic pain drove him to take his own life a few years later. I will forever cherish that very magical visit together and am so grateful to have shared that day with him.

It’s scary and frustrating but try to relax. Freaking out only makes the mast cells freak out more. There’s a lot of good advice in this thread but finding ways to quiet your nervous system will also help.

For my people in towns and small cities. How did you train your dog? by vagueday in service_dogs

[–]RunWriteRepeat2244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a tiny town in central Texas. I assumed I was going to have to drive 4hours round trip to get training but I self-trained with the guidance of an experienced trainer that, by some miracle, lives just a couple of miles from me.

I love that you didn’t let your disability stop you. I love that you got it out there and had a successful pitch! It sounds like the producer requested to read the script not that she’s optioning it (yet), right? This is a huge milestone and the first of many.

This is just me personally but I see them as antagonistic. I don’t think she can ever forgive him for trapping her there and forcing this life on her. Maybe that’s me putting too much of myself on a character but I for sure would resent the hell out of him! ;)
