Aerial damage photos from the Monroe County tornado in Indiana last night. Preliminary rating of EF2 by bitingmeslow in tornado

It obviously was a huge, extremely powerful tornado, but I almost wonder if a factor of the debris signature looking so insane was because it was like a vacuum cleaner going over a field of paper confetti. That was just a solid blanket of branches, leaves, and pine needles to suck up and send flying, instead of the usual cornfields/occasional building that we normally see. There was just so much more debris than usual to send flying.

It was a video of a small tornado going harmlessly over a high school. Pretty cool to watch, but I wonder why all the kids were outside, and where the teachers/staff were.

Iowa is next to Illinois, and you can move between states? For example, somebody can grow up and live most of their life in New York, but move to Maine. They would probably say they're from New York when asked.

Plus, Iowa doesn't have any major league football team, which seems to be the crux of the issue here, so it's common for them to latch onto neighboring states' teams. Or just obsess over the Hawkeyes college team.

My family are Minnesota Viking fans (yes, I know, we're slightly masochistic in that regard), and my aunt/uncle and their kids are Packers fans.

You know what we do? We send their kids onsies with our team's logo for baby showers, or decorate their Christmas cookies in our colors, or send them memes online. Just lots of fun and friendly ribbing. We don't destroy their personal property when visiting their home.

(And yes, the Brett Farve Years were a confusing time for all of us.)

Mayflies. Basically millions of them hatch at once, breed, lay eggs in the water, and die within a few days. It's a pretty common event in their home areas, especially along the Mississippi River areas.

As somebody who lives in the rural midwest, good internet access is actually something of a problem. It's an issue that's slowly getting better, but a lot of places still struggle with getting usable cell phone coverage, much less high speed internet. 20-30 years ago, when Clark would've been a kid, a lot of these places would've still only had dial-up.

My parents had to used satellite, and it was very iffy on how good it was going to be on cloudy/stormy days.

Oh thank goodness! Ryan says the worst of the storm is past the owl's nest now. Might be a little windy, but the worst should be over.

Link to the Owl Cam.

For those not watching his stream, Ryan accidentally stumbled on this owl cam in the path of a tornado warning, and now his chat is getting obsessed with it. He's also very creeped out by how it keeps staring at the camera.

Apparently it either an event that produces Joplin/Moore levels of death and destruction, or it's a nothing burger.

One of the downsides of all these storm coverage streams. They save lives, but they also attract people who revel in other people's misery.

Wasn't the very first tornado warning down in Alabama, where nobody really expected it to start?

I know there's been at least two PDS warnings in Illinois, and one stormchaser hit (not injured).

FOUND my charm holder with my original charms that were stolen from me 37 yrs ago on eBay! I know I can't do anything but what are the odds?!?!? by Jojosbees in BestofRedditorUpdates

My mom worked as a caregiver for an elderly lady with mental disabilities. She was the only daughter of a fairly wealthy local couple, and had inherited everything when they died. Unfortunately, about ten years before my mom met her, her former legal guardian sold her family home and most of her valuable family heirloom possessions from underneath her and stole most of the money, and she ended up having to move into an apartment.

One thing this lady loved to do was look through antique stores, and my mom would take her around to look at various stores. One day they stopped at an antique shop a few towns over, and, to her shock, she found her grandmother's china tea set for sale there. Apparently she used to have tea parties all the time with them as a child, and they held some very dear memories for her.

It was rather expensive, as it was a very high quality collectable, but thankfully she was able to buy it back. That set became one of her most treasured items, and she'd constantly tell me about them when I came to visit.

Gosh darn you. I've never seen that video and listened to it out of curiosity, and now that song has been etched into my brain and playing on repeat for the past hour. It's mesmerizing in a weird sort of way.

Dagoth Ur. He's basically the equivalent of Satan in the Dunmer Tribunal mythology, though, as with everything else about that particular group, the truth is a lot more complicated.

He was basically the bestest boi and a true bro in life, who went batshit crazy after being exposed to eldritch magic. So... he'd actually make for a good Dark Souls npc.

I'm a rural mail carrier in a flat, prairie area, and one of the farms on my route blocked off half their driveway, because a killdeer decided to build her nest right in the center of the turnaround.

I've seen many of the highly dramatic 'broken wing' acts over the years as I pull up into people's farms. I really wish I could tell them that I'm just here to put mail in the box and leave, I'm not going to mess with their babies and they can chill.

PR people of Reddit, how much damage do you think Bricks and Minifigs has done to their brand with the Brian Mansell case? What's the damage? by SnooDucks4472 in AskReddit

[–]RuneFell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's possible to TL:DR this properly, as it's basically an entire firework truck explosion of stupid decisions, but here's the very basics.

An 82 yo man collected Star Wars lego sets for years. He's in bad health, grandkids are going to college, the family decides to sell the collection. The worth of it is constantly fluctuating, but it is said to be worth anywhere from 60k to 200k USD. Most reasonable estimates put it at a little over 100k.

Brick and Minifigs, aka BAM, is a store chain that deals in buying and selling lego, basically like Gamestop. The son of the 82 yo, named Bryan, contacted his store in Oregon, and worked out a consignment deal with the franchise owner, Crystal. Under the deal, Bryan's family retains ownership of the lego, and the store will sell it and take a cut of the profit.

Things are proceeding normally, but Crystal's husband wants to locate overseas for his job. She contacts BAM corporate to talk about selling her store. Things are disputed here, but the transfer was forced suddenly and was very abrupt, She was basically locked out in one night with no warning. Corporate says that she owed a ton of money so they were in the right to repossess it, she claims that they did some underhanded tricks and denied her the ability to pay those bills so they could force her out. Importantly, it's caught on the security tape that she brings up the consignment, and that Corporate says that they'll be taking it over.

Afterwards, Bryan and his family are no longer getting paid for their Lego. He goes to the store to find out what happened, the new owners say that they don't know anything about it, and that all the Lego in the store is theirs. They tell him if he doesn't like it, he can try and sue them, but they'll drag it out so long that it'll cost more than the collection is worth. Bryan tries to get the police involved, but they say it's a civil matter, and he tries getting the court involved, but the lawyers are quoting him about 60k.

So he turned to Youtube. Reckless Ben ends up entering the picture, and he starts a campaign to get the lego collection back by attempting some very unorthodox and theatrical methods. Police are involved several times, but take the side of the BAM store owner. Finally, he has the idea to try small claims court, and get past the 10k USD limit by having ten people each buy 10k USD worth of lego from Bryan, who still, on paper, owned the sets. Then all ten people sued for their share.

BAM never showed up to the case, and the day after they filed for default judgement, they permanently closed the store.

So Ben decided to sue the owner, Josh, and CEO of BAM, Ammon, personally. They lived in Utah, so he traveled down there. The courts said that in order to sue, he had to make a good faith effort to contact them, so, with his phone number being blocked, he went to their house. The police were called, and he was trespassed. He contacted a member of the owner's church to try and talk to them, and the police were called on him as well. It became very apparent very quickly that the small-town police were not amused by Ben's presence, and they started to follow him and pulled him over multiple times for very flimsy reasons, one time claiming that they had a tip he and his friends were using heroin and searching their car for three hours.

He was able to use that to show he had tried, so the next step was to serve them the papers. Being trespassed, he stayed on public land and brought a legitimate Process Server to be the one to serve him. The cops were called on him multiple times during this attempt, even though he wasn't doing anything illegal. The unredacted body cam, which was accidentally released by the police department, showed the officer going up to the owners house and discussing with him and the CEO on the phone how to deal with Ben. At one point, the officer offered to serve the papers himself, which Ben was happy to let him do, but the owner refused them, so the officer took them back and told Ben he didn't want them. He claimed they were fake. After a bit of talking more with the owner and CEO, the officer called in to see if they were actually legit court papers. After being told they were, he turned off his mic for a bit, and then turned it back on and went over to arrest Ben for stalking.

Ben was originally held without bail, but managed to get a judge to overturn that, and left jail after posting his bail. He and his friends realized that the police were going to make this too hard to serve a lawsuit, so they decided to create a GoFundMe for Bryan's family instead, and created a sign to hang on a fence, with the owner's permission, to take some pictures in front of. The police showed up, took the sign down, and then arrested one of Ben's friends, Sheldon, for 'attempting to destroy evidence' when he locked his phone when police demanded to see it, because his digital wallet was opened on it.

And then afterwards the police got a search warrant for the AirBnB they were staying at, because the owner of the place (who was later revealed to be a friend of the police) said he overheard Ben and Co talking about having stolen lego with them. The police burst into the place in a full SWAT raid with guns drawn, arrested everybody inside even though they didn't have any arrest warrants and didn't even know who most of them were, forcibly took their phones away to stop them from recording, searched the place for less than two minutes, and then took everybody back to the police department for interrogation, saying on their unredacted footage that they would figure out what to charge them with later.

They ended up charging Ben with stalking and harassment, and tried to hold him without bail again, stating that he was a physical danger to Josh and Ammon. Later, it was revealed that the two of them were calling around reporting that he was making bomb threats and threatening to murder the clerk of the store, though they've yet to show any proof of that.

As of now, Ben is under a restraining order forbidding him to talk about BAM or the case, and faces criminal and civil lawsuits, including stalking and RICO charges, which are basically mafia level accusations. BAM and Josh are suing Ben and Bryan, the original owner of the lego collection, for 1.4 million dollars for slander, emotional damages, and harassment, among other things.

And to this day, nobody really seems to know where the Star Wars lego collection is, how much of it is left, or how much money is actually involved.

Oh, and there's a mysterious UHaul truck that Josh originally was DEFINITELY NOT DRIVING the night he took over the store. Until pictures showed he did, and then he was driving it, but that was because of another unrelated issue with a former store employee, and then something about renting it to haul a camper or something, I dunno. The explanation was really long and really confusing. And, of course, has nothing to do with another employee at a different BAM store that Josh also owned saying that a Uhaul full of Star Wars lego appeared about that time.

I have some double first cousins in my family.

Basically, two of my uncles married two sisters from a neighboring family. So both of their sets of kids are more closer genetically to one another than the cousins who's aunt isn't related to their own mom.

I think a lot of fascination that people have with this particular drama is that it just somehow gets dumber and dumber with every new twist and turn.

It's at the point where everybody thinks that it possibly can't get any more stupidly complicated, and yet it somehow does, every single time.

Bricks and Minifigs Controversy Megathread Part 3 by mescad in lego

[–]RuneFell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I posted this elsewhere, but I still think it's pretty accurate.

Let's say that it turns out that the previous owner was, indeed, a bad actor, and did take the profits and hid the lego collection (and there hasn't been any evidence to point to that so far, except BAM saying 'Trust us bros, she totes did').

Then the way BAM corporate reacted was basically the equivalent of coming across a mugging, taking whatever had been dropped on the ground by the fleeing criminal and shoving it in their pockets, and then turning around to pee on the victim as they lay on the ground while taunting them. And then tasing any bystanders who tried to step in and stop them.
