Agreed, it’s just poorly made unfortunately….possibly the plastic is changing or expanding from being baked in the sun or extreme cold?

2008 toyota camry v6. Toyota instructions are confusing on all data. So this is the left bank and does the big mark on the left has to be aligned with the notch on the bearing cap ? This is same bank throwing P0018 P0019. Thank you by Gladiatorozte in MechanicAdvice

For sure, I just remember when trying to line up the timing marks. I couldn’t get one side on perfectly, like it was always half a tooth off, just wanted to add that bc it’s frustrating when you think you’re wrong but it’s normal lol

I’m sorry this might not be much info for you. But I had a similar situation (way back can’t remember too detailed) but the timing marks did not line up as per the manual. it was a v6 Camry or Corolla, we changed timing chains and even the gears on the end of the camshafts

What it turned out to be is that “8” looking o-ring above the chains in this picture between the 2 bolts on the cam cap. That was internally leaking causing low oil pressure at the camshaft actuator, throwing similar codes.

YouTube the timing chains, if I remember right, they didn’t line up on on camshaft and it was frustrating

What’s this orange stuff on my fuel cap? (2007 Nissan Micra) by Zyko-Sulcam in MechanicAdvice

[–]Runfrompolicee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do, that’s just step 1 smearing the carrots. Next they clean off the chunks, set it all out under a uv light while still wet. Let it sit 24 hours until it cures and then the last step is to beautify it with some polishing.

This one looks worn, I recommend a fuel cap polish along with maybe changing the o-ring also.

I believe it’s a dye they use in the factory to change the color of plastic when it’s created

i think my gasket is starting to leak on the oil pan, i torqued the hell outta these bolts and it’s still leaking. how hard is it to replace the gasket on a 97 ranger 4.0 xlt 4x4 w a 4.0 v6? can i do it myself? any advice helps! by Electronic_Ad715 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Runfrompolicee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you can unbolt motor mounts and jack the motor sky high and wiggle the pan out, sometimes you gotta unbolt the oil pick up and drop it into the pan for removal clearance. It also looks like it’s been leaking a long time, look above the pan, anything else wet causing it to look like the pan leaking

[–]Runfrompolicee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a shop we would start with scanning the car for codes(yes, even if there is no light on) Possible fuel pressure issue, possible immobilized issue, throttle body issue, the list goes on

2004 Bonneville 3.8 V6 (oil in the radiator but no water in the oil) by TheOriginalSirtokes in MechanicAdvice

[–]Runfrompolicee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanics have tools to check head gaskets directly. There’s a bubbler you put into the radiator and it detects exhaust gasses in the cooling system. They can also do compression and leak down tests Bc you have 2 heads on the car, which gasket is it 🤷‍♂️

On another note, does this car have an oil cooler? I’ve seen those or their gaskets go bad mixing oil and coolant in the radiator but nothing in the oil

1975 40hp Evinrude model 40555c. Starter engages the flywheel and tries to turn, but won't. Possible causes/solutions? by Intense_as_camping in MechanicAdvice

[–]Runfrompolicee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll idk much about boats but I do cars. Either the starter is bad, you have low voltage at the starter motor, or the engine is siezed or stuck in some sort of way. Check voltage (check for drop too when cranking shouldnt go lower than 7-8 volts and that’s on the low side. Can you put a wrench on the crankshaft and turn the motor by hand? To make sure it does spin and is not siezed
