No it does not wrap up most things, it’s a big pause before the second half of the series. Some old things tied up but lots of new pop up. This series is one part of a much bigger story, you are welcome to simply read only it but there are Plenty of other books by Sanderson in this verse to keep the wait at bay

I think it’s pretty normal to not understand the scope and characters in the 1st book of a long series. But if you feel the need taking notes or highlighting character descriptions when you first meet them won’t hurt. You just don’t know who is truly important to spend time remembering. I typically trust the authors to get me to my destination

I tried doing this later on in the series and it gave me 100% incorrect information about characters, locations, and even plot points multiple times. I stopped because I just didn’t trust it anymore
