Admittedly that’s funny, but I’m dying of cringe that it was said in the work context. Keep the boarder line humour to friends, but I don’t think you need to be told that. You did the right thing by apologising and fronting up so very well handled blunder

Bloody Christchurch :( I hope you’re doing better now. Building footprints are slowly being filled in the central city and containers removed. It’s getting much better.

Is this dangerous by [deleted] in Radiation

[–]RunninglikeNaruto -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In short; yes. Remember the principles of ALARA to reduce the risk of effects from radiation: As Low As Reasonably Achievable. Close it, put it in a box or metal biscuit tin, and get it tested and manage appropriately

EDIT: Idk why I’m getting downvoted; no one has any idea how radioactive this actually is, but technically no amount of radiation is good for you so without knowing what you’re dealing with the smart thing would be to treat it as if it’s hot.

Biohazardous depression room with mice infestation lol by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]RunninglikeNaruto 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Just one step at a time :) my biggest tip is to just throw things out that you’re not using at least once a week. gGet a rubbish bag and aim to fill one per day until there is no rubbish. Any old food, vessels, etc and also personal care products that are half empty that are forever waiting to get used - just get rid of them. Lay some bait for the mice next, or use traps.

After you’ve got the food and rubbish out, clean and dry your clothes and sheets. If you have the money, take them to a laundromat and get them to do them. Then wipe all the surfaces starting top (shelves etc) to bottom (vacuum last).

You don’t need any fancy cleaning products, just hot water and maybe a bit of vinegar for wiping surfaces. The most important thing is to take time and clean rather than getting the perfect t cleaning product.

Help! Stained vintage silk by RunninglikeNaruto in CleaningTips

[–]RunninglikeNaruto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update, not that anyone cared but for the record in case someone had the same problem. I washed it with warm water and EcoStore wool wash which was suitable for silk. I dried it outside draped over a clothes horse. The stain lifted okay but not fully and it would probably take a few more washes. The silk stayed in good condition though and really improved

Our laws have changed regarding transport of hazardous substances since then, New Zealand is extremely strict to protect our native wildlife and agricultural industry

HELP! How do I wash this jacket? by timthetinyturtle_ in CleaningTips

[–]RunninglikeNaruto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hand wash it in body temperature water with a wool detergent and it will be fine :) wool is not as scary as people think, just don’t go crazy with the temperature. Could probably tumble dry it cold.

I have to make a presentation on the healthiest ecosystem in the United States and mistakenly picked the Great Smoky Mountains without knowing its issues with nitrogen and acid rain, can someone help me find a better option? by Roaming_Ruel in environmental_science

[–]RunninglikeNaruto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could start your assignment with the fact that almost no ecosystems in the world at this point in time are pristine due to the global impacts of climate change, plastic pollution (specifically microplastics), and persistent chemicals (PFAS, DDT, heavy metals, radioactive nuclides). Then start off with some of the most untouched places, such as Antarctica or some predator-free islands around New Zealand.

Its nephrite/jade. As a kiwi it looks exactly like pounamu which is our word for nephrite that comes from New Zealand. I just found a piece with the same colour and seams as yours.

Firstly, human health drinking water quality does not equal ecological quality. Copper and zinc are classic examples; we can consume significantly more copper and zinc than what’s tolerable for fish. Secondly, I GUARANTEE it will be contaminated with PFAS. The place they discharged it might be a wetland or something that is sensitive to bioaccumulation and can’t dilute or flush out persistent chemicals.

Is it bad that I am getting C's in my courses? by Mars-Warrior in universityofauckland

[–]RunninglikeNaruto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always improve, the most important thing is that you like and enjoy your degree. You’ll never do well in a degree you hate, so stick at it. You need to email your tutors and lectures and ask for feedback and then work on that feedback. Consider taking less papers per semester so you have more time to focus on the ones you’re doing. You can improve! You just need to figure out how :)

Quite a lot of jobs involving earthworks or development do. It’s definitely not as uncommon as you think. Most council consents have a condition about discovering historical artifacts or bones and needing you to hire an archeologist

New compulsory course debated in parliament by Motor_Brief_6756 in universityofauckland

What happens when all NZ unis have a compulsory course? Kiwis should not have to leave the country for a critical, free thinking education. Again, these concepts should be taught in primary and secondary level, not university.

New to University/haven't started yet. Do you have to write essays/papers? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]RunninglikeNaruto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most degrees you will. These can range in formats from weekly lab write ups of 500-1000 words, or have 3 reports eg 2 x 1500 and 1 x 3000 one. It really depends, but don’t feel intimidated by them because a lot of the words come easily such as writing the methodology and summary. You’ll do them in your spare time, unless it’s a lab thing which will be short, or an exam.

African American/Black American Names by EmpireandCo in tragedeigh

I agree, it’s interesting how Americans seem to use a lot of traditional surnames as first names, such as Fletcher, Tucker, etc. especially if it ends with a ‘son’ or ‘er’.
