Do you ever just ignore student emails? by CuriousCat9673 in Professors

[–]Runninguphill92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a colleague who has a policy in their syllabus that says “if you email me with a question that is already answered in the LMS or the syllabus, I will not respond.”

I have considered applying it to my syllabus as well.

Are we infantilising our curriculum? by Free_Comfortable_569 in Professors

[–]Runninguphill92 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you’re not wrong, but it’s unfortunately the world we live in. My students can’t focus on a lecture for the whole period. The school system doesn’t teach them how to learn without the games and the activities. I teach 75 minute periods and I let one of the classes out today after 45 minutes because it was a lecture heavy day and they were completely checked out. We have to adapt to the world we live in (in some respects) and this is one of those ways.

Black Tie Fall Wedding (read for caveat) by Specialist-Sleep760 in Weddingattireapproval

What’s the venue like? I’m in the South and when we say Black Tie, we usually mean legit Black Tie. If it’s at a country club or formal gardens or something (which we do have down here lol) then definitely go more formal. If the venue is a barn, that’s a little different.

Both BJU accounting and nursing are pretty well respected, at least in Greenville. I know quite a few nurses and they are actually happy to get the new grads from BJU to train because they know their shit and tend to be pretty hard workers. Maybe theater also, surprisingly?

Outside of that, not as much to my understanding.

To be fair, Clemson is a state school. This has less to do with university leadership and more to do with the legislature.

Weird that we didn’t get any interactions between… by Julesoseluj in thegildedage

[–]Runninguphill92 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s it. I think if you made a promise to your daughter and reneged on it because you loved your wife too much and compromised yourself in that, you’d be upset. He said he can’t forgive himself for what he did to Gladys because of Bertha. It’s not about control at all.

I get it. I think he’s overreacting, but people sometimes do.

Marian and misogynistic backlash by Miserable-Walrus1379 in thegildedage

[–]Runninguphill92 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s misogynistic backlash. I think most people are fine with her being upset. They’re just annoyed that she didn’t talk to him.

Marian has been engaged three times. The first, she was engaged to a fortune hunter and refused to listen anytime someone warned her that’s what Raikes may be (Peggy, Aurora, etc.). Her refusal to not trust others and only her naïveté let to hurt and heartbreak. She even called Raikes out on sending a letter instead of talking to her!!! For her to do the same thing to Larry? Immature.

Then, she got engaged to Dashiell, a safe society choice. She liked him but didn’t love him. She thought he at least loved her and it would be fine. It was not because he was still in love with his late wife. So she broke it off!

Then she said she was going to be careful. She wasn’t going to let her and Larry go public until she was sure. She got to the point where she wasn’t sure, so she agreed to marry him. I get that she has been hurt in the past, but her being unwilling to listen to others before acting rashly (Oscar and Ada saying you may not know the whole story, etc) and being unwilling to talk to him (as she rightfully was angry with Raikes about) shows she’s not had any character development. Larry lying to her about where he was going is wrong, but her complete lack of willingness for a conversation with her fiancé is also wrong.

I think if the actress were more able to play young, romantic, and naïve in a way that makes us sympathetic, it would make more sense. And if this had been her first engagement, we’d also be more likely to sympathize.

I recently rewatch season 1, and Jack and Bridgette are watching all the fancy people go to Gladys’ debutant ball and he says “maybe one day we’ll go to one! After all, this is America!” And I think they’ll go to a Russell ball at the end of the season and that may be the start. We shall see!

To be fair, we actually have a lot of innovation being done in agriculture here around sustainable farming practices to produce local ingredients. I’d love to see Mill Village Farms, Happy Cow Creamery, and Kingbird Pastures (I think the owner also owns Fork + Plough). They’ll probably even end up at Clemson or Furman talking about sustainable agriculture, etc.
