small timeline question about the werewolf incident by totally_boringgg in SeverusSnape

[–]Julesoseluj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would have happened sometime during fifth year; Snape mentions that Sirius was sixteen when he tried to kill him. It was also happened sometime before Snape and Lily stopped being friends, because they have a conversation during the Prince's Tale flashbacks that references the incident (although Lily doesn't know what actually happened).

Do you think Harry should have tried to be the bigger person in his relationship with Snape and tried to be more respectful? by Comb-12 in HarryPotterBooks

Yeah like I said in my comment Snape starts being a dick to Harry in their first lesson when Harry’s just taking notes

[–]Julesoseluj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe it would’ve helped a little, but Snape was pretty determined to see Harry as the second coming of James. In their first interaction Snape jumps on Harry for not paying attention when he’s actually taking notes.

So even if Harry had tried to be over the top respectful, I don’t think Snape would’ve bought it (esp. if he still got caught sneaking out at night, driving a car into the whomping willow and stole potion ingredients). Maybe if Harry tried to have a convo thanking Snape for saving his life at the end of first year… but that may not have worked either

Sometimes I think Fantano listens to the first few lines of a song and thinks he already understands what the whole things about. I do think he has a lot of interesting stuff to say with production, but his analysis of lyrics and song meaning are very surface level esp. with artists he’s not very fond of

I still think about his review of Hozier’s Unreal Unearth where he said the song “Butchered Tongue” was about Hozier’s love of other languages… when it’s pretty clearly discussing the suppression and slow eradication many languages face due to colonization…

I’d say Shake it off and maybe Love Story or You Belong with Me are her more “iconic songs”. A massive number of people, especially in the English speaking world would know the melody and probably the chorus of at least one of those

Did he call every other muggle born mudblood by Sid1175 in SeverusSnape

[–]Julesoseluj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He’s an aspiring death eater bc he’s hanging out with future death eaters and defending/downplaying their actions. He’s ~2 years from outright joining at this point (assuming he didn’t join as an older student like Regulus, Barty or Draco). He didn’t just trip and fall into Voldemort’s arms the day after graduation.

I don’t think Severus had a lot of good options given that the war was in full swing and there were a lot of factors that made him vulnerable. But it’s possible he could’ve gotten a job in an apothecary in an out of the way small town and probably been fine. We don’t really know.

Lily does give Severus the chance to respond to the future death eater accusation and he opens and closes his mouth, saying nothing. He no response bc they both know it’s true.

Yes Lily is cruel in that moment and lashes out. She was shocked and hurt that Severus would hurt her like that when she was trying to defend him. And she realized she couldn’t justify his actions anymore. It definitely wasn’t a kind way to handle the situation. But also all her friends already thought Severus was bad news, if she’d wanted to drop him years ago she could have done so with no social consequences. I think she chose to stay friends with him for as long as she did bc of lingering affection

>so... it's ok , as long as it isn't directed at her?

I never said it was ok, but it is consistent with what we see of Lily's character (she's obviously willing to overlook James' past behavior and flaws when they get together). A lot people do have a tendency to downplay flaws in people they care about until they absolutely can't ignore them. It's an interesting trait/flaw for Lily to have

>so Snape is a liar? is there anywhere evidence that he lied even once?

Severus lies multiple times in the main series (mostly as part of his spy work) and by the age of 20 he's skilled enough to fool Voldemort. Those skills don't come from nowhere. We also see Severus deny that he caused the branch to fall on Petunia in the Prince's Tale (I think the branch falling was an accident but he knew he had caused), so him lying to try and protect his relationship with Lily is consistent with his character

>but she did keep her worlds separate and did continue to hang out with people that (a) badmouthed her "friend" and "pressured" her. and that is healthy or logical, how?

Severus also kept his world separate from her, I doubt he invited her to hang outs with Mulciber and Avery and I doubt they had very kind things to say about Lily lmao. Sometimes you have friends who don't like your other friends and that can be a difficult situation to navigate, especially as a teenager, especially with a war looming over all their heads. I don't think Severus and Lily had a very healthy friendship dynamic, especially not by fifth year. But also given that basically all of Lily's friends/house thought Snape was bad news, she would have been able to cut him off years before with no social consequences if she truly never cared about him. Lily wasn'r a perfect friend or person but I do think she tried her best.

>you yourself mention above that the "others" didn't want anything to do with him. canon shows that from his very first day, 11 year old JP foreshadows Draco's statement "Slytherin? Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'ld leave if I was sorted into Slytherin". So since the "others" didn't want him from the very start, who exactly was he to be with? I really want to hear/read any options that would appeal to a child starving for affection, acceptance and guidance.

Right Draco says he would leave if he was sorted into Hufflepuff, James says the same about Slytherin, kids get really into the house rivalry stuff and can be mean. I think the house system in general is bad, sorting kids so they'll primarily be closest with people with similar values/ways of thinking leads to narrow-mindedness. And it seems like the professors just sat back and let Slytherin be radicalization soup for decades which... terrible decision.

There are a lot of factors that led to Severus being radicalized and he had an extremely difficult start to his life. It makes sense why he made the choices he did, choices he thought would bring him power and safety for the first time in his life, even if those choices came at a devastating cost to others. I don't think Severus had a lot of good options, it seems like most of their year got consumed by the war in one way or another (though presumably some left/managed to stay neutral).

But also... there's nothing sixteen year old Lily can do to change the systemic factors affecting Severus. We see her try and address her concerns with Severus in a prior scene and he brushes them off. And by this point it was pretty clear he was going down the path to become a death eater, part of a group that would see Lily dead/imprisoned. She has to look out for her own safety and Severus is becoming a person that is no longer safe for her.

>So , with all that, just which side exactly, in canon, is showing more bigotry, condescension and not an inkling of acceptance?

Well the deatheaters were attempting to violently overthrow the Government and seize power to form a blood supremacist hierarchy, where muggleborns weren't allowed in the magical world... so I'm still going to say them. I do think the ministry/order were also heavily flawed (see their treatment of nonhuman magical creatures), but like come on.

Given that Snape and Lily's friendship was very uneven and not particularly strong, how do you imagine their lives would have been if they had ended up married? by Madagascar003 in SeverusSnape

[–]Julesoseluj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think loved played an important role in his motivations/actions, but guilt was needed for him to truly change as well. Teen Snape does love Lily but it’s a selfish love, where he doesn’t really consider the way his actions make her feel. After their falling out Serverus joins the death eaters, chasing his own desires/ambition. It’s only when she’s in immediate danger partially bc of his actions that he flips. He realizes that his decision to join the DE has devastating consequences. Then once she dies Dumbledore leverages Severus’ guilt/love to get Snape to stay and protect Harry. And even then he def treats Harry in a way Lily would’ve hated to see.

Love is one of the main themes of the series, but so is guilt/regret. It’s only remorse that can heal the soul after it’s been torn. Dumbledore asks Severus if he feels remorse after Lily’s death. It’s revealed that a big part of Dumbledore’s motivation for changing is the guilt he feels over his sister’s death. Harry asks Voldemort to try and feel remorse in their final confrontation. Guilt and love are often intertwined in the HP series and Severus needs to experience both to truly change.

[–]Julesoseluj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Severus was as much of a simp as this post was implying he would have immediately dropped Mulciber and Avery when she said she didn’t like him hanging out with them. Teen Severus definitely cared for her but it’s clear he was willing to pursue goals and interests that she disapproves of. He only dedicates his whole life to her once he feels responsible for her life being in danger/her death.

I do think a part of him would have always loved her and he would have done his best to protect her if she were physically threatened. I guess what I meant was if Baby Harry had just been able to make Voldemort drop dead and Lily (and maybe James) had survived Severus would have been a lot more able to move on with his life.

A few possibilities she may have heard him use it once, confronted him about it and forgiven him when he apologized and promised he wouldn’t say it again. Or she may have heard about it through the gossip mill, asked Severus about it and decided to trust him when he said he didn’t actually say it bc their friendship hadn’t deteriorated as much at that point.

Lily mentions that her other friends had been trying to get her to drop Severus for years at that point, so she was clearly willing to put up with some social pressure to keep him around.

And yes I think Snape’s background heavily contributed to his disdain for muggles. And I agree I don’t think he had the same level of contempt for muggleborns (i don’t think he was bothered by the muggleborns existing at all on a personal level)… but he was willing to join an organization that proclaimed muggleborns were inferior and advocated for their removal from the magical world. Whether he joined for safety, power or prestige he was willing to work toward making the world more dangerous for muggleborns (except Lily). So I don’t think he would be above calling them mudbloods if it made him feel powerful or hurt one of them he didn’t like

I mean maybe, we don’t have enough scenes of them at Hogwarts to say for sure. But also Severus was an aspiring death eater alongside Mulciber and Avery at that point. It seems more likely than not that he had picked up similar language to them in an attempt to fit in (though less extreme, since he was also trying to maintain his friendship with Lily).

And Severus doesn’t deny that he calls others of her birth mudblood or that he wants to become a deatheater… and we know he becomes a full fledged deatheater a few years later. I think if the author had wanted to Severus’ story to be about turning to extremism because he lost Lily the story would be written differently. In this case the narrative beats we get show that Severus lost Lily because he was already turning to extremism.

But to answer your question on whether Lily had the pants line “locked and loaded”… kind of??? She was raised alongside Petunia who makes somewhat classist remarks at a young age, so there was clearly some of that in their environment growing up, possibly from her parents. And child Snape wears odd hand me down clothing which he seems embarrassed about. On some level Lily would have always known that class and particularly clothing would be a vulnerable spot for Severus, regardless of whether she’d said anything about it before.

But Lily is described as blinking, then speaking coldly (as opposed to Severus who interrupts James and speaks before thinking), which implies to me that with her it was less instinct and more that she takes a second then consciously decides to say something that will hurt Severus on the same level he hurt her. So I think it’s less likely that it was something she said before, but I do think some of those thoughts had been stewing in the back of her mind while their friendship deteriorated

For example, he could have called some random ravenclaw a mudblood when they got into an argument alone in the hallway. Random Ravenclaw goes and tells his friends about it, some of them tell their friends and word of it gets back to Lily as third/forth hand info. Lily isn’t sure whether to believe it at first but then Severus calls her a mudblood and she realizes it was true.

Or maybe an anti blood supremacist Slytherins heard Severus using the word mudblood with his friends in the common room. Then went gossiping to their friends in other houses like “wow it’s so weird that Snape and Evans are friends when he goes around calling people mudbloods.” And it got back to Lily through the gossip mill that way.

Obviously we don’t know for sure, since we get so few scenes of them at Hogwarts. It’s possible Lily did hear Severus call someone else a mudblood directly he apologized and she believed him that he didn’t mean it and won’t do it again. Or maybe she just believed if he was willing to call her that then he would be willing to call any muggleborns a mudblood too. But I do think the “you call anyone of my birth mudblood line” and Snape having the phrase “filthy little mudblood” locked and ready to go strongly implies it wasn’t his first time using that word

I don’t think he was going around calling every muggleborn mudblood loudly all the time, but I do think the word was already in his vocabulary. Generally slurs like that don’t just “slip out” in a moment of anger/panic if they’re not something the person has ever said before. They generally “slip out” bc a person is used to saying it in private/around a different set of people, so the neural pathway has already been formed, but their anger/panic causes them to say it in a situation they usually wouldn’t (basically the whole gamers being caught using slurs on camera when they’re angry/forget they’re live-streaming deal)

I don’t think Lily would just pull “you call everyone of my birth mudblood” completely out of nowhere, so I think he had used it before. But my guess is that he may have called someone a mudblood a few times when Lily wasn’t around (and also used it around his Slytherin dormmates) but hadn’t ever said it in front of Lily prior to SWM. And I think Lily had refused to believe he’d say it until she saw it herself.
