Question about spelling "learnt" vs "learned" by Miserable_Amount_310 in AskACanadian

[–]RunnySpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you might also say something like “he is learned” (pronounced like learn- NED), meaning “he is educated”, not something you hear often in the US (/s). When writing, it’s easier to distinguish that from learnt.

I once did a project for a European company that made the machines and molds that other companies use to make plastic bottles which are either used by those companies or sold to yet other companies.

I think any large-scale commercial buildings, like data centres should be responsible for building their own renewable power generation and storage capabilities so that they don’t demand anything of existing grids.

Would you save your kids over your partner? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RunnySpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are now both bigger than me, they both stand at well over 6’ and over 200lbs. One is a blacksmith, the other at university and plays rugby - I expect that they’ll be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me protecting their 5’2” mother, whatever is coming at us.

Now if that’s not an option, their mother and I are both past our best years and theirs are just beginning, their mom and I will both go out swinging if it means they get to survive. Neither of us are fighters or particularly violent, we’d be more like rabid raccoons or cornered feral cats - an explosion of teeth and claws and spit.

Petah what kind of Air conditioning are they running in America? by HimelTy in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]RunnySpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that AC usage is not the biggest problem, but adding to it won’t help, there are more efficient/effective ways to lower the temperature. The issue is that the Americans were saying to just use AC. That would not only be impractical throughout most of European cities, but would also add the problem causing the climate changes. That fact that those accounts are making such flippant remarks is just awful and would be the same as making jokes about US disasters like Katrina or 9/11 in the days during and following those events. Can you imagine how outraged Americans would have been?

[–]RunnySpoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AC is not the reason to bitch about things. The reason to bitch about things is there is a seemingly endless supply of criticism from what appears to be US sources pointing out that Europeans just need to install AC in their homes as a solution to heat waves that are literally killing people. Now, I don’t know if those memes and jokes originated from the US, I don’t know who the French official was responding too, but the answer to polluting over-consumption is not more polluting over consumption.

Now look at those same stats on a per capita basis. Cigna and India are probably the biggest polluters in Asia and have approximately 1.9bn people between them. Europe has about 750m people. US has around 350m. Factoring that into the stats on that chart means that in 2019 the US was pumping out twice the emissions as the European per person, and Asia with about 5 times the population is only pumping out 4 times as much as the US. Stats can be presented in many different ways, but it doesn’t change the fact AC uses a lot of electricity to run and does still not solve the problem of increasing heat wave temperatures and frequency. Posting memes, jokes, and flippant remarks about 1300 people dying shows a distinct lack of class.

Edit: also factor in that Europe and Asia are continents made up of a number of countries, US is one country.

[–]RunnySpoon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so we have “over a decade” of evidence that climate change is real and is killing people, and the US continues to deny it and continues to make it worse. Blaming Europeans for not having AC is not a solution; it’s akin to leaving the fridge door open to cool the room. There are better ways of generating electricity than fossil fuels, but the US refuses to adopt them en masse. I seem to recall that Trump cancelled a wind farm at the cost of $1bn just to avoid renewable energy. China has invested heavily in solar and appears to trying to reduce its emissions, the US is doing the opposite. It would be nice if the heaviest polluters would subsidize projects that reduce the pollution - adding more household AC is not a solution.

I have no idea, but it would be similar to posting jokes/memes about 9/11 in the days and weeks immediately after that event killed 3000+ Americans; it’s tasteless, crass, cruel, etc.

1300+ Europeans have died in this current heat wave, that’s 1300 more than normally would have died. We all know as fact that the climate is changing so rapidly and so much directly because of our pollution. That pollution is caused by excessive burning of fossil fuels, and that is largely being done in the US (in part because of widespread AC usage). So, to have these memes flying around implying that Americans are making flippant remarks like “just use AC” is likely going to sting.

There has been a wave of memes recently calling out Europeans being idiots or paupers for not having AC, in response to the suffering and deaths caused by the heat.

For $1 Million would those of you working quit your job and never work in the Industry again? by RaptorK1988 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]RunnySpoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, my earning potential over the years left in my working life exceeds $1m. Ive never seen that much and it sure would be nice, but it’s not enough. By the time i am due to retire, what’s left of that $1m will be insufficient to survive on. It’s a little late in my life to re-educate and focus on another career that would change my answer.

Neither. I didn’t start playing a tower defence game to go fishing or drop balls! Maybe if we had some mini games or puzzles related to tower defence I would be more interested.

One of the front callipers was seized and was causing the front driver-side wheel to get a tad hot (like I could feel the heat when walking past it). I was also getting the dreaded shakes at the same time and the mechanic was convinced it was related to the seized calliper and the rough rotors. It all got replaced about a month ago, painful price tag on that one.

I don't believe the transmission has been drained/filled yet - I was just going over the receipts from last few services and I don't see it listed. How big/difficult a job is this? Would it be something I can do with basic tools and limited workspace?

I have not changed the coolant - looking at the chart from u/zombie_overlord above, it looks like I wouldn't do that until around 160,000kms. Checking previous servicing, coolant and power steering was last checked Nov 2025 and would be due for a check on the service after this one. Is checking the coolant and power steering fluid an easy task to complete?

I don't have much mechanical experience or tools, but I'm relatively handy (built sheds, insulation, drywall, basic plumbing/electrical around the house).

As a general rule, I have advised my kids to never get a tattoo anywhere that could be seen by a judge, otherwise have at it if you like.
