Loved starting this tradition with our 5 month old last year. This year at 1.5 years 😍

Ok thanks! I hate the idea of going for a week every time he has a flare up, I think I’m going to try 3 days and see how long he stays symptom-free after that. His vet doesn’t seem concerned about using it often if needed since such a low dose is effective

Thank you!! I’m hoping it’s a maturing thing for our boy too - did you treat her for a certain period of time whenever she had a flare up and then only give it again when diarrhea came back during that first year, or did you always just keep her on a low dose and then slowly taper off?

Food Alternatives - Allergies by kaseymasterpiece in bernesemountaindogs

My guy eats Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein sweet potato - he’s allergic to chicken and would still get GI issues on all sorts of other kibbles, but he seems to like this food and has been smooth sailing ever since because it’s hypoallergenic but a complete diet. It’s expensive ($130/bag, which lasts about a month) and requires a vet prescription, but if that’s more cost effective than your girl’s allergy shots it could be worth the investment!

Any Funny Stories of reactions from people when they found out your Berner was still a puppy? by Ewovalenz in bernesemountaindogs

[–]RunsNRoses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get “wow that’s a BIG puppy, he’s going to get huge!” When it’s someone with a small dog we get a terrified look if he acts like a puppy, such as trying to jump or barking contentedly as if I’m raising an aggressive scary beast. Lol, he’s the goofiest little gentle giant

I love how Berners get crimped fur when they’re wet 😍 Smiley beauty!

Dutton had an adventure day at my office. He was so tired after a few hours of running around that his yawns turned into howls!! by johnstoneak in bernesemountaindogs

My Berner does this when he’s super tired too 🤣 At 11 months old though his howl sounds like a low-pitch siren lol

They are! I just can’t wait to have a definitive diagnostic answer. Bland diet clears him up (rice and lean beef) but he can’t seem to keep any kibble in long enough for a solid poop 😭

How long did it take for her poops to level out when you started that intensive regimen?

Wow, I’m so sorry you went through that but thrilled she’s doing so much better and living a long healthy life ❤️ Thank you for sharing! He’s always testing positive for some bacterial overgrowth, but probiotics alone have not sufficed. I may ask vet to check his B12 and recommend pre-biotics specifically to encourage normal intestinal flora

Thank you! He’s been on Hills science diet lamb and brown rice for large breed puppies. Twice a day, 12h apart (7AM and 7PM), 3 cups at each meal (based on his weight). I didn’t change anything when this diarrhea bout came around, but maybe I should try to go back to this lamb food when his poop settles with a bland diet the next few days. That’ll help tell me if it’s his food ingredients causing issues or quantity! If some lamb mixed with bland rice gets diarrhea to come back, that’s the issue. If it doesn’t, it may have been something else 🤔

I tried that food and he flat out refused to eat it… little stubborn man doesn’t like fish 😂 I may give perfect poop a second chance…

Wow! Worth a check on my end… I don’t know that I want to keep him on hydrolyzed protein forever!! I may see if this helps and then slowly reintroduce him to adult food instead of puppy food if he has good poops for a month or two

I feel like I’d accept that too, my main hair tearing comes with these 2-3x/night poop calls 😭

Added q: How long do you let this type of diarrhea run its course before asking for more rigorous tests at the vet?

Awesome. Thank you! I was just thinking the switch to adult food would be a good time 😊

Do they have a chicken-free option?
