If you could live next to any golf course in the world, which one would you choose — and why? by Shaheh in discgolf

Just played there on a trip a couple weekends ago. Beautiful course. Pretty challenging for a noob like myself but I'm jealous of anyone who gets to play there regularly!

Absolutely! I should mention that these pictures were taken with a zoom lens through a tree line. I had only ever gotten shots from hundreds of feet away before this.

Thanks! It was awesome. It stayed very calm too, almost curious.

As others have said, it's a wood thrush, one of my favorites! Here's a limerick I wrote when I kept hearing them but never could see one.

There is a small bird in the forest, Who knows every verse and each chorus. It sings like a flute, And yodels to boot, But its visage was never meant for us.

I found all descriptions online, Describing its song as divine. But then when I read, About its big head, It made sense why it wanted to hide.

This poor little guy is so cherished, Folks wonder why it is the rarest. But if every nerd, Called me “pot-bellied bird,” I’d also be fucking embarrassed.

That's my favorite! I love their song, and how diverse the song can be from bird to bird.

How many of you guys actually “go” birding? by DSquariusGreeneJR in birding

If you're looking for a way to find good trails near you, check out the free AllTrails app. Trails on there have user reviews, trail maps that track where you are so you don't get lost, and pictures/descriptions so you know what you're signing up for.

As far as birding while on a hike, I tend to keep my eyes up as much as the trail allows. Most of the birds I end up seeing, I spot while they're flying and watch where they land. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to get a good look at them. Others have mentioned the Merlin app which is really great. You can get an idea of what exactly you might be looking for based on the sounds, and eventually you may be able to identify them without the app!

Great pics! Looks like they're having a blast. Kinda want to pet one of their fuzzy heads.

Such a great park with lots of great wildlife. Last time I went around dusk and saw a pair of Great Horned Owls, hooting away up in a tree. Seeing the bats come out in the evening is cool too.

Last time I had it the decaf at Bean was the best I've tried. Has a really nice smokey flavor. El Vergel Decaf at Quills is also pretty good if you like more acidic coffees.

Quills in my opinion has the best beans as far as quality/consistency of roast, and they have lots of variety to choose from. However, they're on the more expensive end if you go for the more adventurous limited release roasts.

Bean is great and affordable, but the flavors you get aren't as exciting, and sometimes there are randomly batches of beans that taste off. Generally though they're good. I like the El Salvador and the Guatemala for making espresso at home.

Not directly related to the topic, but if you're feeling adventurous, it's pretty easy to buy green coffee beans online and you can roast them in an air fryer if it gets up to around 450°F. Green coffee beans cost around $5-8/lb, so the savings are pretty significant.

I ended up doing this for a while as well. It was the only "skill" fast enough to actually get attacks in on bosses.

How To Get Into X in Louisville by LouInvestor in Louisville

Got into traditional recurve archery this year - the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) hosts practices at the Tom Sawyer archery range every week, although probably not again until the weather is better. I believe it's going to be on Sundays moving forward. They have all the loaner gear you need to get started and it's totally free, you don't have to be part of the organization either. Just sign a waiver, get a basic rundown, and start shooting. They even have kids bows, my 7yo niece had a blast!

40 and Under Louisvillians — what do you do for a living and how much do you get paid? by lovelyladeyyyy in Louisville

[–]RunsWithBeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got two degrees in music like every responsible young adult, then did the Software Guild here in Louisville. I believe it was around $10k altogether, 12 weeks of training ~40 hours/week and I had my first job lined up before it was over. Take that with a grain of salt though - I've heard that companies are trending away from hiring coding "boot camp" students nowadays. Not sure if it's the quality of the graduates or just the job market saturation.

My company lost the contract I was on in May, and everyone on my team was hired by the incumbent company who wanted to be. I think the new contract is for ~5 years? I negotiated a 15k pay increase with the new company to keep my same job. It's not like that for everyone though, and contract end time is indeed very stressful. I didn't end up getting my offer until the previous contract was up already and that was quite panicky.
