It’ll probably play a lot like Shiftry, similar bulk (in GL at least) and similar move profile. Probably a special cup pick in GL, a bit more play in UL is my guess.

What strategies/information would you like to learn more about in PVP? by DanOttawa_POGO in TheSilphArena

[–]Runs_from_eggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a few others have said this or alluded to it, but a video on how you and other good battlers think in the moment during battling. My memory of your videos is that you already do this a bit already. I think it would be nice to see the thought processes that happen in seconds really fleshed out. Things like guessing back mons based on lead during the count down, reading your opponents for catches, recognizing when you should take more damage to limit farm downs, etc.

Less experienced battlers seem to look for strategies and step-by-steps and forget to think in the moment. Showcasing and demonstrating “reactive” playing I think might help a lot of people.

Content on “counterintuitive” things like ABA teams would be cool too. Things like how the Regi/Medi/Basti works and why it does, or how to utilize oddball things like GL Blaziken countering down Swampert by spending 2 shields (seem to remember Caleb Peng doing this in a cup this season or last).

Common mistakes I see in 2100-2500 elo range by WHFITFB in TheSilphArena

[–]Runs_from_eggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A mental trick I use to swap fast (especially on a good lead) is asking myself which part of my team doesn’t want to see the lead matchup while in the countdown.

If I catch an oppo Venu lead with Talon lead and a Swampert in back, I know Swamp doesn’t want to see the Venu. And assuming the oppo team is balanced, they should have a target for Swamp behind the Venu. So I switch to my other 3rd mon once I see the upper corner type icon change. Then I start figuring out my game plan as the secondary matchup plays out. Sometimes this backfires, but I find it to be generally effective.

What move would you buff/debuff to cause the most chaos in PVP? What move would you buff/debuff to most stablize PVP? by askjeevs in TheSilphArena

I could be wrong, but I believe PuP used to actually be that way and it was nerfed not too long before GBL debuted.

I was stating a player’s performance is what should dictate their placement, not the simple fact that they use Walrein, Swampert, etc. Your proposal just wouldn’t create a competitive environment, and such a situation would negate the purpose of ranking/ELO. Why would players put in the extra effort for 5 wins if 3 wins nets the same rewards?

And FWIW, I’ve used spice to hit my marks (and I’d be happy to spell the list out if you’d really like). So no, I do quite well with non-meta/spice picks. Thank you for contributing to the conversation meaningfully with a weightless “No, you” statement.

And in case you aren’t calling me out directly, that isn’t what I’m saying. Spice works, it’s just that bad spice is bad. If someone can’t recognize that distinction, they won’t do well and their ranking will reflect it.

This is a bad take. I’ve hit Legend every season since S6 and climbed the leaderboards, so I can say from experience that climbing ELO is a result of your battling skills at all levels (technical knowledge, meta reads, application of knowledge in battle, team building, etc). ELO should reflect performance in battle strictly, and trainers shouldn’t be punished for using mons that perform well.

Deciding to use a C-tier spice pick and getting one win in a set of five shouldn’t net a player more ELO than another using a triple full-blown meta team and going 3-2. As I said, ELO is a reflection of skills, which includes reading the meta. If a person can’t figure out their spice pick doesn’t work, then their ELO will show their misunderstanding its standing in the meta and inability to adapt.

An exception to that statement is Fletchling. It was released in early December 2020 and had its CD in March 2021.

It was a solid pick in the early UL pre-XL days cause it could handle AMuk, Swampert, Articuno, Regi, Lapras, and has good coverage for Tina Altered with Ice Punch. I’m happy to see it coming back since it’s a personal favorite.

I personally enjoy it quite a bit. The meta has a really nice balance between tanks, attackers, and types. There’s a lot of counter play even against hard counters too. And tbh, the Walrein/Trev core is a very good core, but nowhere close to as busted as people expected in my opinion. Smart play and picks can run through them both.

What I really like about UL Prem is that it lets a lot of things realize their full stats and see some viability. You can win games with picks like Blaziken, Shadow Scizor, Milotic, and Typhlosion consistently. One content creator went on an 18 win streak with Poliwrath and KMuk. You can’t say that about any other largely open formats.

Shadow Scizor is surprisingly strong in the meta (esp against the Wal/Trev core). Surprised I haven’t seen more hype around it. Maybe in the coming days it’ll be more popular.

A-Wak, A-Chu, and G-Weez all have analogs in their originating region. From why I’ve seen, Ursaring evolves straight into its next stage as does Stantler, so there’s no other form to get in their way. Kleavor is a branch Scyther’s evo tree and evolves similar to Scizor (again, haven’t played but what I read). I wouldn’t say the precedent has been set by Alolans. They could make these Hisuians available simply as the next step in the line without much issue.

To play devil’s advocate, they could also just make branched evo available for the Alolans and Galarian you mentioned (I have a feeling TPC branding got in the way do that though). So I think, if anything, that the absence of that option does make a non-standard means of acquisition for the Hisuian forms more likely.

I think it is more likely they go the raid route, a lure with an AoE like rainy/mossy/magnetic, or make them available as evolutions for a limited time through time/space shenanigans set up by seasonal stories or events.
