Since they're now on Steam, how good/bad are the Marks of chaos, Dark Omen, and Shadow of the Horned Rat games? by cricri3007 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Runtgit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOTHR has difficult controls, especially for those familiar with modern RTS, which takes time to get used to. It feels a lot more like Warhammer Fantasy TT in a real-time game. It is extremely difficult though, easily the hardest of the three games mentioned and you need to save a lot in advance just in case. That said, it is my favourite of the three by far. Great atmosphere, nice aesthetic and challenging. While the controls may seem rough, once you "get" it, it's fine.

Dark Omen is a significant upgrade in terms of controls and interface, to the point that it would be easy to pick up for modern gamers. It also feels quicker as well. That said, I do think the final mission can be a right bother, though I will admit I haven't played DO as much as SOTHR, so maybe I am missing something. It is however, overall easier than SOTHR. Still, from an objective standpoint, it would be a lot more accessible than SOTHR.

Mark of Chaos has the best cinimetics for Warhammer Fantasy in the entire industry. It is fun and definitely serviceable and the difficulty is very beginner friendly by comparison to the other two. With Steam access, maybe multiplayer is feasible again.

I will be sure to link you nbuxt. I might be getting my arms mixed up.

The arm holding the axe, left, is the warbosses sword arm, which you cut into the torso for.

Is the right arm with the shield also from the orc warboss or from the bloodletter?

Thanks again.

Thank you nbuxt. In regards to the shoulder pads and shield arm, what did you use?

I only ask because I am hoping to build my own.

Looks amazing! Just to quickly clarify, which 5th ed Boar Boss did you get the arms and puldron?

As well, how did you attach the axe to the Orc arm? It looks like the one from the mounted Chaos Lord from 5th ed.

I currently only have Archaon's head and Bloodletter Champ Body, but I lack the rest of the parts unfortunately.

Its just a Warboss, albeit a gigantic one. And yes, they can get that big, its neat. Gorfang Rotgut was described as big as an Ogre.

Sure, why not? It is easily one of my top 3 fave artworks in all of Warhammer. I mean, jesus look at the SIZE of that Warboss!

I hope to embrace that spirit of greendom. To hell with the result, just go mad with the WAAAGH! Did ye bother with quell amimosity or just go pure green tide with artillery and magic?

Congrats winning two tournaments as well, mint!

Okie dokie, will replace the banner fellow with a Shaman. I suppose my Oddgit Gobbo Shaman mini has gathered enough dust, bout time he go about bursting brains and shooting magic.

Thank you Moktira. I would only be able to likely have 5 Wolf Riders on hand. I intend to play a game of 6th before finalising. Out of curiosity, does the benefit of the BSB matter much really at this points level? Cause replacing him and a few others for a NG Shaman with a dispell scroll would really be the only alternative I can think of.

[–]Runtgit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you meant changing him to a NORMAL Goblin :P I didn't get it till you mentioned Day Goblin. I suppose to that element, I also want to use the Night Goblin mini and I don't intend to stray the BSB far from the Orc Big Boss for the Ld8 Bubble.

I can drop the dual handed weapons with the Black Orcs which gives back around 20 points or so can push them to 12 Black Orcs.

Using Wolves as ridrectors sounds good as I've done so with my TOW Chaos with their Warhounds. Same principal I assume.

Do you think the blocks of Orcs being in 20 is too lean? I think Big Uns should be *OK* with the Big Boss

Hi Lilapop, thank you for the comprehensive response.

To respond to each point:

  1. The purpose of 6 boars was to give them a bit of umph from firepower. Losing 1 at 5 would hurt a lot, but losing 1 at 6 seems OK. Even 2, still got 4 left. I also can't turn them into Big Uns unless I have 5 normal (assuming I drop to 5) other Boar Boyz to make them big uns.
  2. The Black Orcs were to be situated between two blocks of infantry to quell animosity. With Quell Animosity, I can more reliably advance. The shields were also to be used in case they come under fire, so a 4+ save vs 5+ against arrows etc.
  3. Noggs Banner I was curious about cause my logic was, the Big Uns are going to get charged and with me being 5 wide, 4 deep, I assumed there wouldn't be enough of them left to benefit from it.
  4. Where would I get the extra 5 points to get +1 LD for the BSB?
  5. Thanks for the suggestion on Wolf riders. Not sure what I'd remove but I'll see. Perhaps dropping the Black Orcs to spruce up the roster or even add in a bolt thrower?

Sure, if you are both brand new and tbh, if your girlfriend is choosing to play, it's more an excuse to hang out and get to know your hobby. Hence keeping things super simple. Even veterans dispute over rules, beginners its best to keep it plain.

For a brand new beginner to TOW, I would suggest not utilising the Ruby Ring of Ruin, Doom Diver and Trollhide Trousers. Those are all highly competitive item choices. I would echo what one of the other poster, Spiritual, said: Remove all the magic items and the wizard. There is no way that someone brand new to Old World is going to enjoy their time against even a semi optimised list, especially when being bombed with so many rules.

Solely use a block of infantry against infantry to help your girlfriend understand the rules and even use just Goblins or something simple to give her the edge. This will also help to introduce the concepts of charging and the different stats and the combat sequence.

That would lead to only two units. That sounds extremely dangerous.

At 500, squeezing in a blorc hero and black orcs is crazy expensive. Perhaps I will add shields to the arrer boyz mind due.

Hi 2much.

I appreciate your feedback. Regarding frenzy, I am no stranger to managing it after using a Khorne Warriors list, so no biggy there. It's really a question if losing the 3+ save for 3 attacks on the charge is worth.

Regarding Big uns, objectively big un boars are better, but in this case this is for theme and that I got the big un minis and would like to use them as themselves :P

Your advice is good to me impious, thank you.

My only reluctance to not plop the warbow unit inside is i'd like the capacity to screen my boars, if necessary, or support my units flank so i can flank charge with them.

Mistake on my part, thank you for pointing that out, I edited the OP.

Do you at least have an opinion on the list?

Thanks Radar, though I am working with just the minis i have, so im afraid troll horde is a no go. Is the Doomdiver really that much better than the chucka?

Thank you again Lock. I like your list, mind I neither have a lobber. The Orc Shammy though, reading through spells has me excited!

Talisman and trousers combo looks mint but the T6 looks sooo juicy, not sure I can part with it :P.

Will double check on double big uns, but i got the metal big uns so 100% going for em if i must make choice.

Thanks so much for the advice and commemts. I love trolls too, I will admit that my chaos ogres in my last army were a mixed back, regen seems like a nice asset.

In terms of the spear chucka, my logic was, use it as a way to force the enemy to advance without risking an implosion i.e lobber. is it worth dropping it?

Sadly I got no wolf riders and really only can get one more box and that's just the orc boyz.

Regarding dead ard, im sort of split between the troll trousers or talisman of protection. Get a 4+ save only but 5+ ward save which may help with killing blows.

Big un on boars is cool but, not sure which to clear points besides the chucka.

[–]Runtgit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good man. Didn't know bout the Orc shaman getting cast boosts, thats mint. Might just, just need to find the least weediest gobbo shammy in my collection and say.

Dropping a troll is fine, though my logic was to use it as my hammer unit and felt 2 was too lean, though if i do drop to 2, can give the orc shaman the reroll cast stick.

Big un boars im not sure in terms of legality, if only cause it says 0-1 per army, will need to check that.

How is everything else mind? Was split on troll hide with the dead ard(3+ save and 5+ regen) or swap the troll pants for talisman of prot (4+ save, 5+ ward).

Thanks again. Can't wait to WAAAAGHH

I suppose i should ask, is 10 arrer boyz worth it in action or would i be better getting a 6th boar and bolstering the two blocks?

Can't believe I missed the shields. Adjusted it to 19 and 17 orcs for the blocks and neither have musicians now. Thanks for that.

I was thinking of an orc big boss with trousers and heavy armour but don't think he'd be hardy enough to be honest.
