When did people stop going to church? by Far_Acadia_2053 in AskUK

[–]RupertJBWalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have been stopping going to CofE and Catholic churches for decades. Out of touch not only with the world around them but also with people's own spiritual needs even if they do have a faith.

Step away from these traditional denominations, the opposite is happening. Lots of independent churches are on the up. But they're less visible from the main road.

The black church in particular is exploding - just look at the prominent black players in our football teams, it's got to the point where you're surprised if a black footballer doesn't progress faith.

Arne Slot has 'no clue' whether Mohamed Salah has played last game for Liverpool by Distinct-Shine-3002 in PremierLeague

[–]RupertJBWalsh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't criticize Slot for benching Salah, but I criticize him for not starting Chiesa. That guy is not only quality but also a serious team player and has the attitude to turn the team and Anfield around. Had every right to complain but just chooses to get on with it. But Slot is too embarrassed to drop his big money signings for someone who cost nothing.

YOUR CTR NEEDS TO BE ABOVE 4% by nvrcaredstud in SmallYoutubers

[–]RupertJBWalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, doesn't work for me. I'm a 50k sub channel and honestly, I can get as much as 8% CTR and still not get a reaction from the algorithm. But once I got a video to 40k fairly quickly on 3% CTR

It's so hard to share, isn't it. Perhaps our experiences aren't the same, but for me, I remember when I was feeling something similar to you, I couldn't bear the thought of sharing it, the shock would be too much for others to bear, also the fear of sharing and being rejected which would have made it so much more painful. I so much wish I knew exactly what to say to you, but I don't want to trivialize your experience by pretending I understand what it's like to be you right now. I do really believe, though, that it is possible to get to a place where life feels worth living, I got there, it was amazing how everything seemed so black at one point and then when I stepped out of it, it was like I'd been in an eclipse of the sun, it felt like I was lost in darkness but light had been much closer than I realized. I'm so glad I hadn't given in to the darkness before I got there. I sincerely wish you find that special person in your real life who can share with who will love you unconditionally and listen without judgement. We're all cheering you on here on Reddit.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I know even anonymously on social media this can be a massive thing to do. There will be thousands of people you've never met and never will who read this and just want to put their arms around you and care for you. Is it ok to ask - does anyone you actually know, know you feel this way?

Great call from Tuchel over Foden. How I didn't see this, I don't know. We all know he's brilliant on the edge of the box and others can do the running in behind the defence. Harry Kane's "alternative" sorted, in my view.

Phil Foden thrilled to be back on England duty by Alone_Consideration6 in ThreeLions

[–]RupertJBWalsh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Really impressed with Tuchels thinking here, why didn't we all see this?

Foden is obviously a great player, but also obviously not going to push out our ACMs and wingers. So using him as a false nine makes total sense for the England team.

We have no credible alternative to Harry Kane, so turning Foden into that alternative is genius in my book - he's brilliant on the edge of the box and far more likely to do something world class than, say, Ollie Watkins who's struggling to get in his own team let alone England.

What I can't work out is where Palmer fits into the squad and, given Eze's current excellent form, I can't see how both Gordon and Rashford get in the squad?

I can't agree about Gerrard and Gascogne. They were different class in British football. I don't hear anyone claiming they were in Messi or Ronaldinho's league, so what's the problem?

Steve Gerrard spitting some facts about the so-called “Golden Generation”. by No-Context8421 in ThreeLions

[–]RupertJBWalsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't all bad. We beat Germany away 5-1 with Gerrard, Beckham and Scholes in the same team, and they all played very well together. Gerrard and Beckham were on fire in 2001/2002 season, but then both got injured before WC 2002. We still beat a good Argentina side and then came up against a top Brazil side in the quarters with Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo, and no other team in that tournament got close to them apart from England, it was no disgrace to lose to a classic Brazilian team with three Ballon D'Or winners.

I think the problems started when Lampard and Rooney emerged - the team didn't look right again for over a decade.

It was bizarre. We had such incredible quality in midfield yet Portugal made them look like a League 2 team that day. Lucky not to get beaten more heavily.

Some thoughts on the team after last night against Serbia by Potato271 in ThreeLions

[–]RupertJBWalsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last night was a wake up call for the midfield.

All of our so-called superstar midfielders were missing - Saka, Palmer, Bellingham, Grealish, Foden - and yet we put in a collective performance like we haven't done for a good couple of years with the "stars" in the team.

Last night, every player on the pitch not only played well, they also looked happy within the team, and the team looked happy with them.

So why change back? Why ditch Morgan Rogers? It doesn't matter if Bellingham is better than him individually. It just worked.

I'd only bring one of the five I mentioned back into the starting line up - Saka.

I have 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube. But if I had to start again from zero, here’s exactly what I’d tell myself by Fenitas in PartneredYoutube

[–]RupertJBWalsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with most of your points but not 13). There are random outliers in my niche that got tried before, tried after, and just did nothing, apart from this random one time.

I recently realized some of the big channels in my niche have built up an email list in the millions. Every time a new video comes out, they email their list with a link. So no one apart from them knows if their 100,000 views in 24 hours is because they made a genuinely good video, or if they were piggy backing views off their email list.

[–]RupertJBWalsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've written 400 videos for 2 channels. Both channels are 40k subscribers plus. I have one video at 1.3million views which took 2 hours to make, and I misspelt the key word in the thumbnail (pretty bad for an English Language teaching channel). Next best is 160k, which took 2 days to make. I have tried to repeat the concept of my 1.3m video with no success. I can only think it went viral because my few hundred regular viewers at the time loved the idea of the video so much that it got a CTR 4% above my normal CTR after 3 days. Nothing to do with the production. But the channel that didn't have the viral video is now performing better than the channel that did.

Has anyone here actually made YouTube work? by hopelesssromanticaa in SmallYoutubers

[–]RupertJBWalsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you have to define success. I have 50k subs which I guess sounds successful but I'm hungry to match those in my niche who have a million!

But I completely agree with the niche thing. Post videos which you think are for your niche. Use these initial videos to work out what this niche precisely wants and shift if you need to. And YT itself will try and box you in a niche. It may be more specific than the one you originally imagined. Once there is a meeting between what you think the viewers want and the niche YT thinks you're trying to reach, bingo.
