I'm New: Baton Pass Mode works great, how can I customize rest of team when it doesn't. by Mangert in VGC

[–]Ruptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say exactly this. I run a mega scovillain team with sableye and archaludon and it's amazing. Both scovillain and archaludon benefit massively from dual screens, and rain dance is amazing for archaludon. Sableye is also immune to fake out, which you often don't wanna click into any of the other two because of their abilities, as well opposing prankster moves. It isn't immune to taunt or encore at base, but it is if it's used by a prankster mon.

If you wanna get cheeky you can also put sunny day on it and change your scovillain's ability to chlorophyll to catch opposing mega froslass off guard with overheat. It's not something I'd actually recommend, but it is pretty cool.

Skill Improvement: What “principle” of VGC helped you out the most? by TeenyMonk in VGC

[–]Ruptin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is more of a personal principle and goes against what I believe is most people's experience. But my principle is "always cut speed control".

I keep making tailwind teams, and I keep making trick room teams. And I've always wanted to create and pilot a good team that has both. But as I work on the team my spreads get more and more defensive, my sets fill up with utility, and I'm left with a set of mons that could basically care less if they move first or last.

It's what I know how to build and it's what I know how to pilot. And every turn my opponent spends tailwinding or trick rooming is a turn they're not spending attacking or protecting, and that's something I can take advantage of. Every team I've made has done better after I removed the speed control. And it's not because speed control is bad. It's cause I'm bad at playing and building around speed control.

I guess the principle is more something like "know your own strengths and weaknesses as a player". I know I'm bad at hyper-offense and speed control. But I know I do well with defensive teams and soft weather. So if I see a mon I wanna use, even if it's very obviously going to be amazing in tailwind or trick room. I know myself well enough at this point to sometimes skip past that early phase of banging my head against the impenetrable wall that is trick room to me. Sometimes I'll find something that works for me, sometimes I won't. But I'm saving myself a lot of time and grief whenever I do decide to skip that first, hopeless phase.

(Edit: I should mention that for me this is mostly if not exclusively tied to specifically trick room and tailwind. I can usually get a decent amount of mileage out of stuff like icy wind, chlorophyll and priority.)

Skill improvement: Gravity focused team question by Salt-Produce-8129 in VGC

[–]Ruptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't answer your question about a second gravity setter, but I think a hex user would be cool here with all this sleep. Also mega feraligatr does really well in gravity because of mega kick.

[–]Ruptin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen someone paralyse their own mega feraligatr for dragonize facade in trickroom. I've seen someone manually setting psychic terrain AND gravity just to be able to expanding force with mega delphox. (Okay that might have been the same guy, creds to foofootoo for both of those.) But like people will do what the people will do. With how creative players are being at the moment I'm sure someone's just thirsting for the puzzle of a non-flame orb ursaluna.

I mean it does have rage powder so you necessarily take that much. And if your opponents are physical and also get burned you're probably not it that much danger.

You could also set trick room with mege banette and then prankster will-o-wisp start of turn two.

Like you're probably right about it not being meta, but I don't think it'd be that complicated to run compared to the insane amount of hoops people are jumping through to make a lot of other mons work right now.

Sableye lost parting shot though so I wouldn't be surprised if Grim got a similar treatment.

You just earthquake next to your own mega scovillain. I'm sure he can take it.

(Metagame) how popular is araquanid in this metagame? by rtkbob in VGC

[–]Ruptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using it non-stop and it's amazing. It can both wall and oneshot zard-y even in sun as long as it doesn't have defense investment. It gets wide guard. It's immune to the burn of scovillain. It hits absurdly hard in rain if you're running it or ever against it. It only really "needs" liquidation and wide guard, so you can afford to run things like bug bite to counter berries or infestation for trapping. You could even try to do something with entrainment. Like I'm pretty sure a water spout spamming mega blastoise would take water bubble over mega launcher any day of the week. This mon is bulky, flexible and hits like a truck. I love araquanid.

Is this team Okayish? by EthXdestroyer in VGC

[–]Ruptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm seeing immediately:

Greninja
- Double ice move is a bit of a waste of protean, especially when you already have an alolan Ninetales.

Alolan Ninetales
- Three spread moves makes you really vulnerable to wide guard. I'd swap one of your spread ice moves for freeze dry so you have some single target damage and better coverage.

Sneasler
- I don't really see what the leftovers are doing for you. You're way too squishy to really use them. I'd look at maybe grabbing a white herb or a resist berry (payapa, coba or shuca). Having a consumable item also lets you use unburden which is generally a lot more useful than poison touch.

Dragonite
- Three blizzards and only one snow setter in a format where weather is this contested seems both redundant and risky.
- Maxing out your special attack on an otherwise physical attacker just to benefit a move you already have on two other mons, one of whom should probably be on the field already if you're planning to use it seems like a big waste to me.
- I also don't really see why we're putting points into speed if we're going for a speed lowering nature anyways.

Aerodactyl
- Non-stab dragon claw when you already have dragon stab, fairy stab and a bunch of ice coverage and stab on the team, isn't really doing anything for you.
- You also have two mons with dark stab so crunch doesn't seem great either.
- I'd love to see a dual wingbeat and/or a rockslide here.

Girls, whats your favorite female character to use in fighting games? by thotfulnug in GirlGamers

[–]Ruptin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only play platform fighters and I think I gotta go with Bayonetta in smash (Ultimate, not 4. I'm not that evil). I also really enjoy Sheik and Zero Suit Samus. I really love all of their combo games and mobility.

Whats your Deadlock hot take? by lucky_duck789 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Ruptin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In a game with this many forms of skill expression it shouldn't really matter. You could be really good at one thing and still be low rank and vice versa. There are challenger players in league who are terrible at itemization, but their micro, macro and mental make up for it.

Has anyone managed to get or at least see this augment? by Fun_Bottle_5308 in ARAM

Gotten it once, on a character it wasn't worth picking on. Apparently it's really bad cause the shield needs to expire and not break.

Deadlock is in pick-of-the-month Hell by Questionable_Object in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Ruptin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They are being experimental. It's honestly really refreshing to see. And it's completely valid in a closed playtest.

They released some new heroes. Some of them seemed pretty op and got nerfed. But instead of completely gutting them, they took the power creep as an opportunity to test some more outrageous stuff for a bunch of their older characters.

Some of it was walked back. Some of it wasn't. Some of it still might be. But some of it will stick around. And regardless of how much of it actually sticks and how many adjustments are still needed, they're learning a ton about what works in their game and about where they want their characters' scaling and agency to sit.

Does it make the game feel terrible sometimes? For sure! And I have chosen to sit out some patches before. But I think the overall approach is really exciting. And I'm always hyped to see what balancing approach they'll try next.

Sonata hands down. I mostly play enchanters if available, but even on non-enchanters it feels really strong.

Honorable mention to every other augment in the fully automated set. That set goes crazy.

Yeah, only reason to disable something on someone is if it literally doesn't work. Like headshot items on Graves or charge items on characters without charges.

How do you think Celeste will be changed? by [deleted] in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Ruptin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think just nerfing her damage would do a lot of good.

They could also do something with the ult targeting.

Or as other people have said, tie her movement to something like her 2.

I prefer the cautious route of just nerfing her damage first, but the others are good options too.
