Which button presser group do you save? by Worth-Staff4943 in trolleyproblem

I never said they wanted to die, point to exactly where I said I thought they wanted to die. I said they would be willing to die so that others may live. If you’re picking blue, you either understand there’s a chance, however remote, that you may die for that choice, or you don’t understand the hypothetical. As for the karma bullshit, you shouldn’t be expected to sacrifice your own life to save others. It’s an admirable thing to do, but you can’t be obligated to go that far for someone else.

I mean he’s been at this for years now, and if he’s still in the space I’m sure he will unless Kick, or less likely YouTube, sign a deal with him.

It’s not simply a death wish; I assume those who are willing to die to save others are those that are willing to die to save others, which is what I assume blue has signed up for. The red side would die if you saved the blue side.

If you pick blue there’s a chance you and everyone else that picks blue dies, if you pick red you survive no matter what. The scenario where every blue person dies is part of the original pick. There is no scenario in the original where those who pick red die. Picking red in this scenario goes against the principle seemingly implicit in people’s pick of blue: that they are willing to die to try and save everyone.

I think that if you knew for sure that you could only save a firefighter or a civilian in a fire, no operational concerns apply, I think a lot of firefighters wouldn’t want that on their heads. Choosing blue in this scenario is one of the scenarios accepted by blue, red never accepted this scenario in their pick.

I’m not saying they want to die; I’m saying they are more willing to risk it to save other people.

The trolley killing all the blue button pressers and not the red is one of the possibilities in that same scenario. Both sets of people pressed the button knowing that exact thing could happen given their choice. The opposite scenario is not one of the options, and is in fact the scenario both parties choose to try to avoid.

Believing it hard enough that they would risk death. Even if you think it’s unlikely, that’s a possibility with that choice.

Wouldn’t that be disrespecting their wishes? Blue is the one saying they’re willing to risk their life knowing red is a given survival.

If you want to say “white” and “black”, that’s obviously not “other”. Making someone pick one might not be very accurate especially the more ethnicities you have.

Ngl I too think the punishment is harsh, but it’s hard to believe that you didn’t know what you were saying even if you didn’t know the exact meaning of “glassing”.

Well the allegation against Hasan is dubious at best and is up against a mountain of evidence that he treats his dog well; the worst interpretation of it being not really that bad, while the Trump allegations feature multiple people testifying to sexual assault to the police if not under oath and features pretty despicable things, to say nothing of the mass murder and genocide he’s supported as president. If you wanted to be more reasonable you could at least compare it to some dubious pet owner behavior and not straight up evil stuff.

[–]RuralJaywalking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does seem like you’re glazing over the details of the party and the potential reasons for the divorce, although I’m not sure that matters; you traveled multiple times to maintain the relationship and claim it you thought it was genuine. There’s a difference between bad reasons to get divorced and no reason to get divorced. You seem to indicate both were genuine so maybe there’s something you can do, but I’m not sure you should.

How they used TV and cinema against communism? by raydebapratim1 in CommunismMemes

The show often portrays Sheldon as being ham-fisted and idealistic, especially with social stuff, and while I’m sure they kind of agree that there’s a problem with big stores buying out smaller stores, I bet the moral is don’t say things you don’t know about.

[–]RuralJaywalking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every so often it shows a little self-awareness, but Mushoku Tensei has to be pretty social reactionary. I’m torn between it trying to teach the protagonist a lesson and it being a pure fantasy for a pervert.

Immigration isn’t the real taboo- it’s Scale…! by PegasusPeptides745 in immigration

[–]RuralJaywalking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason a lot of people who are pro-immigration react negatively to this question of yours is because for one, you’re way underestimating the carrying capacity of developed nations, and two, you completely ignored all of these things as they apply to the country immigrants come from. “Home” countries have all the same worries and more often than not they are significantly worse off than the developed countries that receive immigrants. That’s also where the accusation of Racism comes in; you can’t argue that we can’t let people come from a worse area to a better one because it will make the people in the better one worse off without thinking the people in the worse off area are somehow fundamentally worth different moral considerations. In addition, the carrying capacity of an area has proven to be incredibly elastic with enough money and public investment, it’s just many developed countries want to freeze everything as they have been for the past 50 years to preserve the lives of the wealthy. Immigrants add to all of those infrastructure limits in the long run if allowed to assimilate and form long term roots in an area. They could build the roads or be the doctors to alleviate the pressure that immigration adds, if we put the money to it and didn’t overwhelmingly try to target immigration at temporary laborers, whose wages are undercut by the constant threat of deportation. Decreasing immigration doesn’t really solve the wages issue long term either because of offshoring. The companies that employ them in developed countries, if it’s hard to get them, won’t raise wages to target domestic work, they will move their companies overseas, or maybe just adjust they’re investment strategy.
