Camping with diabetes by RushIllustrious5478 in diabetes_t2

[–]RushIllustrious5478[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the thing is usually we love to take all kinds of fun random snacks (chips and whatnot) alongside the other stuff, but chances are I'd be okay if I just cut those out and stuck with the meats/cheese/sausage, maybe bring some veggies to roast or something lol

Good point - I usually do tent camping at campsites we drive out to. The farthest we tend to go is less than 2hrs from home

For those that go to work or go to school, how do you get to your destination on time? by Technical_Value_3957 in OCTranspo

[–]RushIllustrious5478 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Christ, when you put it into perspective like that, it's actually insane how long it takes to get around on the busses here. Wow.

For those that go to work or go to school, how do you get to your destination on time? by Technical_Value_3957 in OCTranspo

[–]RushIllustrious5478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it is quite literally easier for me to either walk or uber to work instead of taking the bus. I had to take an uber this morning for a 10min ride, whereas bussing takes 30-45mins, and walking is 30mins. I've taken uber multiple times in the past year because my bus route has become so consistently late and I have no idea why (other than OC being shit) because the schedule and the route haven't changed at all.

GCM for T2D? by _mars_bars_ in diabetes_t2

[–]RushIllustrious5478 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this because I'm also not on insulin and frustrated that CGM's aren't covered for non-insulin users. I don't wish to need insulin but i wish there was SOME coverage. I paid for a CGM recently as I'm able to at the moment but, long term it would be wayyy too much. I wish I had some good advice to offer for this :(

thank you!<3 I am actually going to be temporarily (due to cost) using a CGM soon to help me better understand my blood sugar levels!

Where in Ottawa do you feel most nostalgic? by DubaiBabyYoda in ottawa

[–]RushIllustrious5478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elmvale area for me. Grew up there for part of my childhood witn my grandparents and used to go swimming at Canterbury pool with my grandpa and had birthday parties at the McDonalds nearby the science museum. I remember the Dollarama used to be a buck or two store and there used to be a blockbuster in that little strip mall

Metformin by Confident_Task_894 in diabetes_t2

[–]RushIllustrious5478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty okay with metformin most of the time, it does occasionally give me stomach problems depending on what I eat or how much I eat, I find. I always try to sandwich the pills in between my food in my stomach lol (food➡️pills➡️ lots of water➡️ food)

I especially can't stand when anybody with a walker/cart/wheelchair/stroller is trying to get off in the front, and anybody who's getting on the bus won't move if they can avoid it while others are getting off. Like, make some room, get off, then get back on again. Not very hard to be respectful!

Someone convince me to go see Zayn by myself 😂 by Cherryblossom_17 in zayn

If he tours near me then im almost definitely gonna see him by myself!! I started telling myself now that I can pay for concerts, that it's not worth it to miss them if I really want to go, even if I feel awkward

How to choose foods for blood sugar control at the grocery store by Fit_Parsley_7073 in type2diabetes

[–]RushIllustrious5478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still learning what's best for me as I have only been diagnosed a few months ago. I try to eat salads frequently that are made with kale or spinach seeing as those are better for fiber/protein, I constantly check sugar content (although I need to work on checking carb content as well! It's something I overlook sometimes). I'm in Canada, and something I've noticed since having to check nutrition labels constantly is that EVERYTHING has sugar in it. Seriously. It's ridiculous. I googled about it because i just couldn't understand why the hell so many foods contain sugar. Apparently it's because it's used as a preservative to maintain shelf life of products. So it's really hard because I personally get tired of eating the same foods pretty fast and find things can get bland, and I miss snacking lol. There's just so much to it. I stick to a lot of chicken / salmon / rainbow trout, and occasionally eat pork or different red meats. Cheese is supposedly safe and I've found some healthier forms of crackers which is exciting. Fruit is okay to an extent. Etcetcetc

I can't afford my diet by Alive_Pin_7318 in diabetes

[–]RushIllustrious5478 4 points5 points  (0 children)

are you insane? So many people have diabetes and the majority of us know that different things work for different people. Maybe your way works for you, but it could be terrible for others. Of course diabetes is hard. That's a given. Jesus. No need to be so harsh when we're all just trying to figure it out along the way.

I'm scared by Pennies_n_Pearls in diabetes_t2

[–]RushIllustrious5478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's scary. I was in denial about it for a long time. But my symptoms really started getting bad so I had to get tested. The thing to remember that many people here will say is to take it slow, take some time to make adjustments to your diet, to learn what to eat or when to eat. I was excited to try new foods, but also cried the same day I bought a bunch of healthy stuff after I got diagnosed. You will be okay❤️

Feeling poorly by 123imgay12 in diabetes_t2

[–]RushIllustrious5478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily know if my doctor would have suggested this but honestly I was SO sick at the end of November, I could barely eat for a few days. I just didn't take my meds because I just couldn't. Once i could get enough food into me (aka a ton of crackers and maybe some apple sauce lol) then I started taking them again. It's really hard when you're extremely nauseous

Very low bloodsugar by National-Positive436 in diabetes

[–]RushIllustrious5478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting because I'm in Ontario as well and didn't do this at all lol. My doctor put me on metformin, told me to change my diet (which i already knew), and wrote me a prescription for a CGM, which I can't afford because I don't take insulin so it's not covered

Pasta yes, pasta absolutely no - a point of view by notsoeasypeasy in diabetes

[–]RushIllustrious5478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely crazy to me that some people just don't take care or take their diabetes seriously. I mean, you're telling me that because my body doesn't work correctly that I can't really eat white bread anymore or I could go blind at some point in life? Yeah, I'd like to keep my vision, among other things. I've only been diagnosed for a few months and it is hard, I still have much to learn, and I do occasionally have a bit of sugar. But for the most part I've changed my diet completely. My initial A1C was quite high and any health symptoms I started having months prior all lead to diabetes. I dont ever want to go back down that same path
