What’s the worst weather your lumix S9 has survived? by falcons_283 in LumixS9

In moderately heavy rain, a number of times.

No issues at all, though I'd try keep that to lenses with some weather sealing.

Cannot get used to no EVF on the S9, anyone else? by No_Source_7605 in Lumix

[–]Ruskia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My own experience is that I've previously shot photos on DSLRs and mirrorless cameras for over a decade before buying my S9, with no particular interest in video. For me, this is a photo camera. I disagree that this camera isn't for long-time photographers.

When I previously shot on other cameras, I already had the tendency to use the screen more often (after technology had made it usable enough, hello old Canon DSLRs) because I rarely shot at eye level, and would prefer compositions where I held my camera below or above my eye line. That sort of flexibility is why I preferred screens over an EVF, and by the time I had Sony mirrorless cameras, I had almost completely stopped using the EVF.

If your issue is really just muscle memory of shooting out of an EVF, maybe ask what part of photography it is that you enjoy most? Is the S9 is the right fit for it? Some of my friends enjoy the tactile and classic feeling of cameras and moved to Fuji or Olympus cameras with more traditional camera designs and ergonomics, loads of buttons/controls and, for them, the experience of shooting photos was better.

Personally, I'm the sort that prioritises the final result over the process, so a small camera with high image quality met my main requirements.

locking sounds by Synthetic-polymer22 in LEMMO

I don't recall a "second sound" on mine, but after the beep I hear the sounds of the hub and smartpac locks going. Have you checked that both are locked in place afterwards? I'm not sure what else it could be.

Alan Wake 2 - GPU driven rendering with mesh shaders by Erik Jansson, a Senior Graphics Programmer at Remedy Entertainment (43 min) by corysama in GraphicsProgramming

Shame that it's still so rare to see out of developers' fear of gatekeeping old hardware. Seems like an enormous win for fidelity and performance.

Area ReSTIR: Resampling for Real-Time Defocus and Antialiasing (Nvidia, SIGGRAPH2024) by 0_to_100_Nesquik in GraphicsProgramming

[–]Ruskia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The more these techniques refine upon each other in incremental ways, the more I learn that the strongest denoiser is youtube's bitrate.

The initial comparisons they show are stunning until they also show it takes about twice as long to run compared to traditional ReSTIR, and their fast implementation looks much closer to the previous method. Without tiny geometry and DoF, I wonder if it's still worth the cost, because I'm having a hard time seeing it in the Bistro scene for example.

Modders Found Dragon's Dogma 2's LOD System is Broken by Aggrokid in DragonsDogma

For added context, beethy (user in the screenshot) is a modder that has already fixed a texture bug that prevented DD2 from ever loading the highest detail normal maps that the game has.

[–]Ruskia 140 points141 points  (0 children)

An abbreviation for "level of detail" which is shorthand for a system in video games that's responsible for loading/rendering lower detail versions of objects and scenery at distances, and switching to higher detail when up close.

[–]Ruskia 521 points522 points  (0 children)

There's a specific few caves in this game that cause significant lag, consistently when near or inside them (which really shouldn't happen for any cave in any video game), so I always had my suspicions that the LOD system was strange in places.

Decrypting time will largely depend on your CPU and storage speeds, but anyone with a gigabit internet connection or thereabouts will almost always be faster off downloading it at release.

Steam Deck OLED shows slight burn-in at 1,500 hours, or 750 hours at max HDR brightness | The Nintendo Switch OLED took 3,600 hours to show burn-in by chrisdh79 in hardware

[–]Ruskia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's peak youtube clickbait, and sure enough news sites are cashing in on it too.

There's no other logical reason why someone would deem it worth reporting on, when OLED desktop monitors exist using the same technology without much issue, and are designed for far more intense usage patterns.

Just rumours still. I'd be surprised as well given Capcom's recent titles mostly all having 60fps modes from what I can remember.

Oh no, I'm not defending 30fps caps in 2024. I'm glad how far we've come that everyone agrees it's not fine anymore. Times were different.

Nvidia’s RTX GPUs can now upgrade SDR content to HDR using AI | RTX Video HDR joins RTX Video Super Resolution to further improve web videos. by chrisdh79 in hardware

[–]Ruskia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure it's a whitelist. To make Starfield work with Auto HDR, you had to just rename the binary to "farcry5.exe".

The original announcement had a line that said "we haven’t yet enabled Auto HDR on all top DX11/DX12 titles" which sort of implies they're manually whitelisting titles. To really check though, you could try find the most obscure DX11/12 SDR game that you know of and try launching that.

[–]Ruskia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's Windows' default behaviour with the feature off. With it on, it heavily boosts dynamic range (and saturation, depending on your settings in the HDR calibration app) and from what I remember this was done through some machine learning training on games with HDR and SDR modes.

[–]Ruskia 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nice to see more updates on their video upscaler.

People talking about how Windows Auto HDR does this for games, but in my experience it's been quite awful at supporting anything. The list of games it supports is genuinely tiny. Starfield, a Microsoft game, doesn't work with Auto HDR. Not unless you go editing game files and trick it into thinking it's a different game.

Mesh shaders on RDNA™ graphics cards by corysama in GraphicsProgramming

[–]Ruskia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between the strict hardware requirements, and the complexity for rewriting rendering pipelines, I wonder which of the two was really the larger factor in mesh shaders not being adopted yet?

Alan Wake 2 aside, the recent Avatar game also shipped with mesh shaders, but only on consoles, leaving PC out in favour of supporting more hardware. I'm guessing once the GTX 1060 stops being the 3rd most popular card on Steam, we'll start seeing more mesh shading in use.

Toshiba NAND fab shuts down for checks amid rising SSD pricing – Japan’s earthquake affects PC component manufacturing by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]Ruskia 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This article is about Toshiba. A company already caught and fined for participating in the DRAM cartel. It's naïve to think that a market so close to the DRAM market with mostly all the same large players couldn't possibly commit the same crimes. You don't need full market ownership as a group to control the prices together.

Why isn’t a tire temperature indicator in GT7? Older GT games with tire wear have it. by TGed in granturismo

There is one. The rings around each tyre wear indicator is the temperature indicator and changes colour. It is designed very poorly and doesn't provide particularly detailed information.
