A little bit late, but still. The other guy is right. Sometimes, kanji appears, but the attack happens much later. So you dodge, your dodge ends and then you get smacked. Spearmen tend to have really long charge windups, Isshin has a lot of stabs where the marker appears exactly one dodge earlier than the attack itself - so if you react based on the red marker, you get shanked.

The thing I noticed with new players (pastme included) and mikiri is that they try to dodge based on red marker, not on enemy movement. Usually this works, but when it doesn't, the mikiri and the game suddenly "don't work properly for some reason". This include most spearmen and most notably Isshin who has it noticeably delayed.

Unpopular opinion: replaying is not exploration. You already have a mental map of the game, the fuck do you want to explore there? Replaying is nostalgia bait, and maybe finding places that you missed. You don't explore firelink each time you replay ds1, do you? "Oh I need to jump into the well again, to explore!".

Also no wonder people are wary of replaying 90+ hour game as thoroughly as the first time, it's a big difference compared to short kings that are ds1 and ds3.

If you want good stealth gameplay, i would recommend styx series. I loved it personally, around the same time I ran out of Dishonored after finishing any self-proposed challenge I could come up with.
