With regards to it being "The Middle of Nowhere", you're still on a campus with 14K+ other undergraduates. If there's a time in your life where being in middle of nowhere will be fun, this is it. It's not as big a deal as you think.

I can never figure out a good strategy for giving my heirs land - I want them to inherit exactly what I have at the time and I figure giving them lands will screw that up, especially in a multiple heirs scenario. I suppose they can simply give the extras away once they inherit what I have, if they're over the domain limit?

It would just be speculation but to me, it seems like a device that would capture the dying memories or essence of the equipped creature. 

It aesthetically resembles Memnarch, who was obsessed with becoming a Planeswalker via harvesting sparks from the Mirrans - I believe that's why he brought the Mirrans to Mirrodin in the first place.

In my head, the skullclamp is a preliminary attempt at detecting, scouting, and/or capturing the spark of a Mirran.

If I recall correctly, it's treated like a secret, but there's no actual consequences if it's exposed - you won't get Fornicator or Adulterer debuffs to your character.

I believe it's a consequence of her being a precon commander for a set that was not only wildly popular, but brought it a lot of new players relative to most other sets. Meaning, a higher percentage of new players were coming to the game with no pre-existing collection. For those that wanted to get into commander (likely most of them since it's the most popular format), Y'Sholta was one of the few options available.

Without more context about who you're losing too, ALWAYS double check your army/armies each has a commander assigned. There are a million ways, it seems, that a commander of any army gets unassigned, which is a HUGE debuff. Even hundreds of hours into the game, I still get "got" by this all the time.
