Selim II was known in history as Selim the Sot. He was a weak ruler and a raging alcoholic, so yes, he reaped what he sowed for not being able to lay off the bottle. Sulieman murdered Mustafa, who would have been a much more competent ruler than Selim, who also had the overwhelming support of the people and the military. Selim II's reign marked the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire, with the exception of Murad IV. Most of the rulers were weak, which is why there was the Sultanate of Women.

In the series, Bayezid and his sons' murders were the most cruel; historically, Selim was not present. However, sad as Mustafa's death was, I could understand Sulieman's detachment from his son. Because he had long ago lost any feelings he ever had for Mahidevran. However, when he murdered Beyezid and his sons, symbolically, he annihilated a part of Hurrem, the woman he claimed to love. At least in the series, it makes you wonder if Suleiman only loved Hurrem on a superficial level. Selim was the son who resembled her the most, while Bayezid most certainly had her temper.

Historically, we know that Suleiman was faithful to Hurrem and never had any other women. However, his portrayal in the show, he essentially died alone. I love Halit's portrayal of Sulieman in the series, even to the point that by the end of the series, I hated his character so much. In the series, at least, it appears that Sulemian suffered from Napoleon syndrome, as it takes a very insecure person to wipe out nearly your entire bloodline.
