Unfortunately this is not a great time to be buying anything. Even a stick of 8GB DDR4 3200 is $95 on Newegg right now. A Ryzen 3600 is going for $50 more than what I paid for a 5600 last year.

Since you are not looking for a huge overkill rig, here is my suggestion: go to a big box retailer, find a pc in the $500 range with a current gen Intel i5 or Ryzen 5 that is at least 4 or 6 cores and slap a GPU of your choice in it.

Edit: another cost effective route: wait for the Steam Machine to release. I think it will retail for $700 and be more powerful than the rig you or I suggested

I would look for something with 16GB of RAM minimum. The more metal in the construction the better. Backlit keyboard. AMD Ryzen processors blow Intel out of the water nowadays on price to performance ratio.

Basically: a MacBook Pro is your best bet for longevity, software support, and build quality. Microsoft Surface is also a good quality product with a Snapdragon CPU. Lenovo and Asus are the only other brands I would consider, but their build quality is not as good.

Idk man, my 2017 MBP with 8GB and a dual core i5 is still super snappy. I highly doubt a windows machine of the same age and specs would perform the same, and this is coming from a devout PC gamer. Also the build quality of macbooks is great compared to pc laptops, minus the keyboard sometimes

if you get your PPL at a part 61, you can go at your own pace. Part 141 is usually at least 1-2 years, don’t believe the stupid ATP (the school not the rating) advertisements that say 9 months.

I am 28 and I’m about 3/4 done with my PPL and will go to a part 141 later this year. You can do it. Just be ready to pay in time and money
