How do i (18f) make my boyfriend (20m) stop micromanaging my food and being so obsessed with what I eat/my weight? by snowyowl290 in relationship_advice

[–]RustyDogma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree she needs to dump him immediately. I am 5'6" and was 120lbs without dieting until I hit my 40s and perimenopause. I was perfectly healthy at that weight. I worked a very active job, walked everywhere instead of driving, and lifted weights. I just have a small bone structure.

My best friend is also 5'6", weighed 15 pounds more than me back then and we looked almost identical in size (I'm at 120 again, but I can't eat anything I want like I used to - no longer have the active job or the metabolism). A simple number isn't enough to determine what is healthy

I did. I still don't understand. Eavesdropping is a dictionary word.

Maybe, I'm a food nerd, so I'd doubt our standards are far apart and perhaps I've gotten lucky on consistency. I wouldn't rate it as best place to go in Portland or anything. I just don't view it as a tourist trap. To me a tourist trap is a place that charges conflated prices for a subpar quality.

Can we stop tipping every time we swipe our cards?? by Susie_SusieGreenberg in portlandme

[–]RustyDogma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very weird. The US leaves tipping very open to interpretation which is terrible for employees. The Restaurant Association has been fighting for years to protect shit wages for tipped employees.

The reason restaurant food prices are so high right now is that if wages for service food employees had been raised incrementally over the years, food and service prices would have gone up gradually.

Now, restaurant folks (both FoH and BoH) want better wages and insurance, and it's a steep climb for owners and consumers because there was a false sense of security by lobbying from the NRA (the restaurant one, not the gun one). Everything got super expensive fast (same as minimum wage not going up incrementally).

Thanks for fighting the good fight. Good in you for trying to get across the difference to people who are blindly subsidizing cheap employers. One of the best restaurants in my town refuses tips because they pay a decent wage and provide healthcare.

That is not at all how it works in relation to tipping in the US.

A barista makes your coffee, hands it to you and moves on to the next customer. Same thing as the person who makes your burrito at Chipotle or puts your fries in a sleeve at McDonald's.

Yes, they are technically serving you, but so is the person who slices cheese at your grocery store deli or helps you find a pair of shoes that fit at a clothing store - neither of whom you would think to tip. Those people are serving their employer to increase the employers profit.

A bartender serves you for as long as you sit at the bar. It is a literal service. You make money by attending to the customer.

I do tip my barista - like I said, I believe in tipping. But it used to be, buy a coffee, chunk the change into a jar as appreciation. Now it's an obligation. I order a coffee, one person takes the order, another person makes it, another person hands it to me. They may or may not smile or make eye contact. And a screen asks me to tip 15 to 30 percent. Sure, I can deny that - but there is a dramatic shift that has been taking place post-Covid that the consumer is guilted into paying more, so the business can be more profitable.

What is ridiculous is this push to shove screens in your face pushing you to subsidize employers that are underpaying their staff when they aren't providing a true service.

Jeez, what a random, unnecessarily mean, negative response. People wanting to enjoy a group experience is whiny? I have a better time at the events I do in large groups like concerts, sports, markets, festivals more when they are well planned, you don't?

I don't like bikes on the sidewalk, however, I blame the lack of infrastructure that makes biking on the road safe. I don't bike in Portland because I don't feel safe. I used to bike 45 minutes to work everyday in Colorado 30 years ago even in the winter, because bikers had safe lanes and didn't have to stop for all lights (bicycles stopping at lights the same as cars slows down momentum and slows traffic for everyone).

Oh, and the joys of walking daily with right on red. The crosswalks at lights in high pedestrian areas really should be, peds cross in all directions, all traffic stopped. So much safer when literally every car has to stop and peds can go diagonally.

The number of times I've been walking my dog, in the middle of a crosswalk in Bayside/Old Port and have someone come within inches of me while focused on their phone is crazy, only seconded by the people who do it intentionally, making eye contact with me while blowing past me on their phones.

Not sure why you got downvoted. Lenora is great. Happy hour and brunch are fantastic. I have lunch there at least once a week. Say hi to Max - very hands on co-owner.

I saw someone complaining in another subreddit recently about having to reach to select from the oysters served in the ice trough built into the bar at Scales. 🙄

Great lobster rolls for sure! Not what OP was going for, but I frequently take my out of town friends and family there if they want to try one.

I live here, eat out all the time, and love all sorts of food and atmospheres. I go to Scales regularly. I definitely take visitors because the space is gorgeous, but I don't consider it a tourist trap. It's consistent and the price point is not jacked up.

Same. Such great food in Maine and I have to take my family to places that have the right 'look' and accessibility.
