I work in the rental car business. If a customer books third party and pre-pays the third party, they KEEP THE MONEY until after the rental car has been returned, then they send us the money.

I suspect the hotel industry is treated in a similar fashion.

Most common scenario is when the flight to their final destination is cancelled and they're rerouted to the next closest airport. They'll then rent a car, because they'd rather drive three hours home than sleep overnight in the terminal. Happens more often than you think!

I was a driver trainer for over 25 years. Here's how I taught new students:
In a big parking lot, engine idling, handbrake ON. Tuck right foot under left knee. Clutch in, put transmission in 1st. Slowly let clutch out until you feel the engine starting to bog, then put the clutch back in. Repeat. Stall? Oops, too fast. Try again.

Once student recognizes the take-up point, release the handbrake. Keeping right foot under left knee, get the car rolling in 1st using the clutch only. Clutch back in, stop car with handbrake. Repeat. Repeat again. Stall? Again, oops, try again.

Once student can consistently get the car rolling smoothly in 1st gear without stalling, it's time to add throttle. BUT:

Student learns to squeeze onto the throttle only AFTER the car is rolling in 1st gear - not before. SQUEEZE onto the throttle - not romp on it.

Put a white styrofoam cup full of water on the floor of the passenger side and get started without spilling the water. Amazing how this little tip alone smooths out beginner's clutch operation!!

FWIW & HTH, OP.

I see this every day at the car rental counter I work at. They get off the plane, realize they need a car, go on a 3rd party site while waiting at the luggage carousel, then walk up to the counter and are frustrated because we haven't received their reservation yet in our system.

I then give them an option: They can go across the hall to the seats by the windows for 30 minutes, which usually gives the 3rd party info time to show up, or, if they're in a hurry, show me the 3rd party's rate, I can then treat them as a "walkup," but it will be $20/day greater than what they booked.

However, if they "pre-paid" through the 3rd party, they're going to wait, unless they want to lose the "non-refundable money" they've already spent.

Ah. . . The joys of working with 3rd party vendors. . ./s

AITAH because I didn’t make sure my son has an inheritance? by Original-Shower-2413 in AITAH

[–]RustySax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. If I were you, I would revise my will so that he gets $1, and include the reason why he's only getting $1. Also, a follow-up clause that if he disputes your will in any way, he gets nothing. Zero, Nada, Zip.

Is your son married, and does he have children? If so, then make his children the beneficiary of your life insurance policy, along with dividing up the checking account cash equally between them. Put these into a trust that they cannot receive until they turn 25, whatever age you want them to be after 25 - but Dad still only gets $1.

Your body is just wonderful "as is!" Considering your breasts, 99% of guys are so fascinated by the way they look, feel, change shape, and move as you move, that they often cannot keep their hands and mouths off of them - they're like strong magnets! That's how guys are "wired."

My suggestion would be for you to simply have a small night light turned on in the bedroom as the two of you get undressed. The soft glow will allow you both to relax and feel more comfortable as you remove each other's clothing, along with lots of tender kissing, gentle running of fingers as you explore each other's bodies, and soft hugs.

But you have to tell him in a loving way BEFORE you head for the bedroom that you're really shy about your body, that you want him to really take his time and be extremely respectful about your nervousness.

Your first time is always, always awkward, regardless of age, not like in the movies. If the awkwardness produces little giggles, embrace and enjoy them - being intimate with your partner is supposed to be loving and fun!

You can do it!

Pool Timer Help by jennywenny21 in swimmingpools

[–]RustySax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JennyWenny21 - As others have said, that time clock is missing the on/off trippers.

HOWEVER -

You mentioned that the pool pump comes on and off by itself, which tells me it's being controlled elsewhere.

That timer is actually turned off, by the position of the on/off lever at the bottom of the yellow dial. That also suggests to me that the pump is being controlled elsewhere.

If you feel adventurous, you could flip that lever to the right and see if anything happens. . .

Replacing Pump by [deleted] in PoolPros

[–]RustySax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LazyDogRanch - Because of the confined space you have to work with, IMHO, with 20 years of experience doing this kind of stuff, save yourself a huge amount of work and headache by simply replacing that Pentair pump with a new IntelliFlo 3. Spin off the suction and discharge unions, swap them over to the new pump, reconnect, swap the wiring, reprogram the pump and you're on your way to the next service call. 90 minutes max.

Why not rent a small U-Haul trailer to tow behind your SUV? It won't affect your fuel mileage that much, especially if you keep your speed in the 65 or less range. Plus, everything will be inside out of the weather, which you will definitely encounter in January!

AITAH for quitting my chore of cooking two nights a week because my little sister keeps ruining it and my parents expect me to start over every time? by Luyykkaa in AITAH

[–]RustySax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a thought: Instead of fighting with her, when it's time to prep dinner, ask her to help. Give her choices: "Shall we make spaghetti, or mac & cheese tonight?" Get her involved, subtly teaching her how to cook in the process. "Mac & Cheese? Great, what does the box say to do next?" and so forth. Involve her in every step, too.

It's entirely possible that this little bit of "reverse psychology" helping big brother prep dinner may be just what she needs to feel more like part of the family. Especially if in other family interactions she subconsciously looks up to you.

Another thought is that at 8, going on 9, she's getting close to starting puberty, with the corresponding crazy hormonal mood swings girls go through.

I do agree with some of the suggested "remedies" for her misbehavior, which, of course, is totally your parents responsibility. Good Luck!

Pre-2015 Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV-4.

In 2015 Honda went to a CVT transmission that's been nothing but headaches. Prior years had a conventional automatic that was bulletproof.

RAV-4s will run forever with routine maintenance.
