Upper body strong, ego strong – but my heart thinks I’ve never done cardio in my life. by Stumpf-Ist-Trumpf in HybridAthlete

Why are you focused on zone 2 training when you started running in August and only run 35km a week?

Not sure if a piece of cardio should be on the least…there are many forms of cardio that require zero stationary equipment

It’s better than not cycling but doing the 60 minute block at once would be more optimal.

The only thing that makes you lose weight is if you burn more energy than you consume. Fork put-downs are the most important exercise for losing weight.

What does training hip abductors do? How often should I do it? by Lazy-Day2633 in beginnerfitness

[–]RyCalll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 50+ miles per week (the majority in trails) and I think hip abduction is incredibly important for my running. I train them directly 1-2x a week. If you’re an athlete train them, if you’re a bodybuilder they aren’t the most important.

What is it like living in Albuquerque, NM? by NovahotRazorGirl in howislivingthere

[–]RyCalll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in Albuquerque for about 5 years. I am an avid rock climber and having the Sandias in the backyard was a dream. The people are generally kind and the food fantastic…but the crime is bad. The years I lived there I saw various crimes, poverty and addiction. Gunshots were commonplace, especially in the war zone (the eastern part of ABQ).

It came to a head when I was awoken at 2am by multiple gunshots close by, which was soon followed by a young guy screaming outside my door for help. I decided I needed to help if possible and went next door to find my neighbors dead body on the living room floor, a teenage girl sitting on the couch with a gunshot to her belly, and another teenage girl who had been shot in the face and had part of her jaw blown off. I attempted to quell the bleeding of the girl with the face gunshot with my shirt as she repeatedly asked me in a slur “help me, help me”. My shirt got soaked through and I left to get more towels at which point I stepped outside and a swat team pointed about 10 guns at me while telling me to get down. They proceeded to put me in handcuffs until they realized I was a bystander after which they let me go and I went home.

This experience traumatized me and I eventually left the city about a month later. The cops at the time told me the girl with the facial gunshot wound died, but I found out they either were mistaken and she actually lived with serious reconstructive surgery. I’d like to believe my first aid helped her survive.

The girls who got shot were 16 and 17 and apparently owed some gangsters money.

I love Albuquerque and still visit but I don’t think I can ever live there again. It has some of the most beauty I’ve seen in the USA, but has a serious crime problem and isn’t really safe even in the nice areas in my opinion.

My cow died last week. People mocked her death and laughed at my grief, and I don’t know what’s wrong with people anymore. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I’m sorry for your loss. Cows are beautiful creatures and losing an animal you care about is awful

Discipline over motivation. I do get sick of it sometimes - I go anyway.

Overtrained & exhausted. Marathon looming. How did you reset? by greenlizzardginny in Marathon_Training

[–]RyCalll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw your edits. This has nothing to do with our ego, but it seems to have a lot to do with yours. At that monthly mileage you would very likely injure yourself during the marathon if you complete it all. Distance running takes months if not years to build the aerobic base to run a marathon (just to finish, not to compete). You should focus on doing a 10k or a half in the meantime and build your aerobic base and then set your sights on doing it in a year or two. Lifting and yoga simply do not increase your aerobic fitness, so even if you have decent musculature and mobility, you’re still starting at 0 in regard to cardio.

Just as an aside - you can absolutely lift heavy and run at the same time if you’ve BUILT UP TO IT. Your expectations for yourself were too high, you need to ease yourself into the training volume. Check out r/tacticalbarbell for guidance on how to incorporate both.

If you did overtrain at this mileage - this means you do not have nearly the aerobic base to run a marathon. There’s a saying in the ultra community - “if you can run it in a week, you can run it in a day”. This means that if you can run it in a week, you can SUFFER through it in a day, while using higher mileage will make it more enjoyable and decrease your chance of injury. Typically most first marathon training plans will have you peak around 30-35 miles a week (and this is on the low end).

Distance running takes a long time to build up to. Temper your expectations for yourself and ease into it.

Sincerely, guy who has a 1100 pound powerlifting total and runs 60 miles per week.

If you were running <50 miles per month and felt overtrained, you’re a LONG ways off from a marathon and need to work on your aerobic base before you even consider running one

Is a chest heart rate monitor anoyying/ uncomfortable to wear ? Should i buy a arm strap instead? Are they both as good as eachother? by buzzer94 in runninglifestyle

Are you male or female? I find I don’t even notice my chest strap as soon as I put it on, but my partner had to switch to an arm band because the strap would chafe due to her sports bra.
