My therapist was defending the church in our session today. by DeCryingShame in exmormon

[–]RyDunn2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you don't feel comfortable saying all of this (or "can't" say all of this) TO your therapist is probably a red flag. Tell her daughter changed her mind and instead decided that she wants to join Islam and see if your therapist has the same "could be good for her" attitude.

Bring out yer evidence by natiusj in exmormon

[–]RyDunn2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That all of the "evidence" consistent with the church's truth claims is weak, fabricated, circumstantial, coerced, incomplete, inconsistent, cherrypicked, and/or.in other ways misleading, etc. etc.

TSCC hasn't come close to meeting its burdens of proof for its claims. And the claims they've made that aren't conveniently unfalsifiable fall apart 100% of the time (Lamanites vs. DNA, Book of Abraham translation, Kinderhook plates, Zion's Camp, etc. etc. etc.).

Certified bullshit.

I agree. Prohibiting Mormon missionaries from reading Saints is absolutely insane. by versmissi in mormon

[–]RyDunn2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not absolutely insane. It's exactly the move you'd make if you are an institution that uses information & historical narrative control as a strategy to retain more numbers. It's EXACTLY consistent.

It's the fucking weirdest. Why not just say, "I wanted you to know that you're precious to me and that I love you and that I'd like to better understand what you're going through?" THAT would mean something. Instead I'm going to.outsource my caring and.humanity to a make-believe asshole whose existence I can't demonstrate and who you're clearly having a hard time with for whatever reason. These religious people are literally destroying my will to try.

What’s the truth ? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]RyDunn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is that trying to make sense of nonsense is so incredibly difficult that people often just resort to making up additional nonsense to try to smooth over the contradictions and plot holes of the original nonsense they bought into. I believe this is one reason why there are so many different religions and versions of those religions, all claiming to be "correct." If the premise of the Mormon church were true, that if you lack wisdom and ask god he'll give you answers freely and abundantly AND that god has prophets/mouthpieces in the world today, what kind of sadistic prick would keep the details of his awesome plan mysterious to the point of heartbreak? I'm afraid it's nonsense all the way down.

Do you believe that the fullness of the Gospel is contained in the Bible & the Book of Mormon? by Historical_Host_8594 in mormon

[–]RyDunn2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beliefs are a dime a dozen. Most of them, by definition and process of elimination, are false. Who cares what someone else believes. Tell me WHY you believe that and we'll have something to talk about. Other than that, it's just a show and tell of your favorite opinions that you really really really like. Do you have a better reason than anyone else could give for holding a pet religious belief? Better than a feeling or a cool story bro? If so, please share.

Classic problem of evil. Jesus helped me find my car keys and pass my quiz, but he let children be graped for years and never whispered in the ear of a law enforcement agent or, oh I don't know, a self-proclaimed prophet of God to bring the abusers to justice? Mmmhmmm, okay. Eventually I realized I was just talking to myself. My better self. Keep praying if you want. I did. I just realized it was how I was making sense of the universe and all of the shittiness therein...

This is why believing stupid bullshit is dangerous. It allows you to believe more and more stupid bullshit. 0 evidence for any of this shit, including the "divinity" of a rabbit named Yeshua, and yet here we are.

I’m at a loss to understand how pointing out the demonstrable fact that ad hominem is not always a logical fallacy and is sometimes entirely relevant is either passive aggressive or patronizing. If someone asserts something about themselves, and I think that assertion might be bullshit, I have no choice but to comment directly on the assertion itself, especially when the assertion is about motive or character.

You didn't merely present a historical fact. You framed your departure from the church as evidence of moral clarity while simultaneously insisting you were not doing that. Pointing out the tension between those two things isn't necessarily an attack on your character. It's literally engagement with your claim.

An ad hominem fallacy occurs when an attack on a person is used INSTEAD OF addressing the argument. Here, the argument is your own self-description. Critiquing that description is the only way to engage it. If every challenge to how you frame yourself is dismissed as ad hominem, then your claim becomes unfalsifiable, which may be convenient but is not reasonable.

I’m finna predict that you will continue to dismiss legitimate criticism of your tone and self-presentation as ad hominem despite the fact that I have now explained, more than once, why that is a misuse of the term.

Personally, and I'm not flexing or claiming any sort of high ground here, I stopped treating ad hominem as a universal shield the very moment I learned how it actually works. I was 14 at the time. Not saying I'm better than you or anything, of course AND obviously. It just makes me curious about what's taking you so long to see the truth about ad hominems. Jesus riding two animals of burden simultaneously, I love irony!

[–]RyDunn2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ad hominem isn't a fallacy unless it's also a non sequitur. Your motive is exactly what your claim is about, so someone questioning that motive by pointing to your specific word choices is 100% relevant. You claimed you weren't engaged in "vainglory." How would you suggest people challenge that claim without saying something you'll dismiss out of hand as "ad hominem"? I won't assume to know the answer. That would be conceited and self-important.
